NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER We Teach Peace We Teach Peace is coming to GVAAurora! This curriculum has already been implemented at the Northglenn Campus and we are excited to bring it here for our students. We Teach Peace is an evidencebased program that was created by The Center for Antibullying & Nonviolence. It includes a curriculum for classroom instruction for all students , as well as a curriculum for school counselors to use in small groups for kids who need additional social/emotional/behavioral support. We Teach Peace includes the following components: P arent empowerment E mpathy A nger management C haracter education E ssential social skills Once a week, for 2030 minutes in the immersion classrooms, students will learn about character traits that will benefit their social and emotional development. These character traits include: goal setting, self control, responsibility, respect, gratitude, service, caring, humanity, courage, honesty, cooperation, perseverance, patience, integrity, and selfesteem . If your child is referred to us for additional support, either by their parent, teacher or themselves, you will receive a permission slip to enable us to include them in a small group . The curriculum also includes schoolhome links . These are to be completed at home with the help of the parents. We hope that you will take the time to work on this with your child. On November 19th at 8:30 at East, during Coffee with Courtney, the counselors will share more information about the program. Voices Students in grades K5 also receive character education and socialemotional learning through the Voices literacy curriculum. Voices combines literacy instruction in English with character development. This curriculum helps classroom teachers create both successful readers and writers, and positive learning environments. Each year, the following themes are explored at a developmentally appropriate level: Earn Free Money for Good Grades Go here: ASFCU Report Card Rewards Students in grades K12 can turn in their report cards each grading period to earn money for good grades. Our Report Card Rewards program pays $2 for each A (or the top grade available) and $1 for each B (or second highest grade available). Students can earn up to $15 per grading term. Attendance As the holiday season approaches, please remember the following about attendance procedures: Per Colorado State Law, students are not allowed to miss more than four days of school per 30 days and no more than 10 days for the whole year. If your child misses school for a medical/dental appointment, please get a note from the doctor excusing the absence and submit it to the front desk within 3 days. If you plan on going on a trip, please go to the front desk and complete the long term absence form. In addition, inform the teachers and get work from them so your child does not fall behind while you are out of town. In order for the absence to be excused, students must be in good academic standing with no unexcused absences. It is the parent’s responsibility to make sure all contact information is up to date. If you changed addresses or phone numbers recently, please make sure you contact the registrar. Afternoon Late Pickup Fees Dismissal is at 3:00 at East, 3:30 at West, and 12:00 on International/Early Release days. If your child is not picked up within 30 minutes after dismissal, there is a $1.00 per minute charge until the student is picked up. A less expensive option would be to enroll your child with the YMCA’s dropin care. The YMCA program, however, cannot accept new students if their enrollment form has not been completed. 8th GRADE NEWS for the CLASS of 2020 8th Grade Career Trek 2015 Our GVA 8th graders have been invited to attend Career Trek 2015 to learn about the Colorado Career Clusters!
