The Panther Band received a No. 1 rating for the third straight year. This year, however, the band decided they wanted a bigger challenge to see how good they really were. They entered the Class B division for Class B schools, even though Watervliet is still classed as a C school The 18 bands were divided into classes according to school enrollment. Watervliet was the only school that participated in a class above its enrollment, so it's no wonder that Watervliet band director, Brian Shetterly, and the members of the marching band were especially proud of their No. 1 performance this year. Judges for the event were Robert Smith of Three Rivers, Richard Swinsik of Kalamazoo and Craig Flahive of Grand Haven. Bands did not compete against each other but were Judged according to standards of performance. The band directors at St. Joseph High School were festival hosts, and Mr. Shetterly was chairman of the festival. Other bands who received No. 1 ratings in Class B were Buchanan, Brandywine and River Valley. The senior comerback picked off his third pass of the season at the Laker 23-yard line, weaved his way 18 yards down to the 7, where the Panthers promptly scored on a three yard run by Jay Danneffel.
