Panther marching band earns
No. I rating in Class "B"
The Watervliet High School
marching band received the top
Division No. 1 rating at the
annual Southwestern Michigan
Band marching festival at
Dickinson Stadium in S t Joseph
Saturday.
The Panther Band received a
No. 1 rating for the third straight
year. This year, however, the
band decided they wanted a
bigger challenge to see how good
they really were. They entered
the Class B division for Class B
schools, even though Watervliet
is still classed as a C school The
18 bands were divided into
classes according to school
enrollment. Watervliet was the
only school that participated in
a class above its enrollment, so
it's no wonder that Watervliet
band director, Brian Shetterly,
and the members of the
marching band were especially
proud of their No. 1 performance
this year.
Judges for the event were
Robert Smith of Three Rivers,
Richard Swinsik of Kalamazoo
and Craig Flahive of Grand
Haven. Bands did not compete
against each other but were
Judged according to standards of
performance. The band directors
at St. Joseph High School were
festival hosts, and Mr. Shetterly
was chairman of the festival.
Other bands who received No. 1
ratings in Class B were
Buchanan, Brandywine and
River Valley.
WHS MARCHING BAND WINS NO. 1 - Eight member* of the
Watervliet marching band posed Monday with the Division 1 trophy

Michigan marching festival Saturday at S t Joseph. Although
Watervliet was classified as Class C, the band competed In the
Class B division this year. Pictured In the back row are Ed

A series of four Watervliet fumbles that were recovered by Bangor
finally gave the maroons their first defeat of the 1941-42 football
season. These occurred during the final three minutes of play and
Chandler scored in the closing seconds. This proved to be a
heartbreaker to the locals as they had outplayed Bangor until the set
of miscues in the final moments. Watervliet is out rf the little Eight
race but on Armistice Day, they will have a chance to get second place
by defeating Coloma.
An unusually attractive window display which has excited much
favorable comment since its appearance the first of the week, is that
which has been created in the north window of the Carmody drug
store. The window has a hunting scene as its motif and is the
handiwork of Roy DeMars, whose work along similar lines in former
years has been well received by the window shopping public.

Last Friday the local high school handed Paw Paw a good dubbing to
the tune of 66-0. Although out-weighed, the locals showed more speed
and practice than their opponents, who were credited with 8 fumbles.
Next Saturday, Watervliet plays Buchanan at Buchanan.
The local baseball season was officially closed last Sunday at the
Watervliet Athletic Park when the fast Hartford aggregation went
down to defeat at the hands of the home team. Winning this game
- made it two out of three for the Watervliet team.
Ormond Smith has sold the Watervliet Bakery Plant and

Dedication rites for the new church elected by the Christian Science
Society of Coloma were held on Sunday, Sept. 28,1941, in two services.
The church was filled for the morning service and a capacity crowd
attended the afternoon meeting. Many baskets of beautiful flowers,
tokens of love and congratulatory messages conveyed the sincere good
wishes of the entire community for the delight in and prosperity of the
new edifice. The growth of the local society has been quite interesting.
The Little Eight Class C conference football title is long from being
settled as the season has really just gotten underway. The Coloma and
Bangor high school teams battled for four quarters last Friday at
Bangor to a scoreless tie, while Watervliet won a decisive victory over
Hartford.

Last Friday night at Dickinson

the driver's seat of the Red

virtually eliminated from

Right from the opening kickoff
Watervliet served notice to LMC
that they were in a football game.
Vic Holland flew down the field

ran smack dab into the Laker

Although, a score wasn't

deep in their own territory. After
an exchange of punts, the Lakers
decided to unleash their heralded
passing attack, much to the
delight of Bob Marvin.
The senior comerback picked
off his third pass of the season at
the Laker 23-yard line, weaved
his way 18 yards down to the 7,
where the Panthers promptly
scored on a three yard run by Jay
Danneffel. Danneffel used his
speed to turn the comer and
complete the conversion giving
Watervliet an &-0 first quarter

In the second quarter
Watervliet's defense faced its
stiff est challenge of the night, as
a fumble gave the Lakers the ball
at the Panther 13-yard line.

naturally it was a different story
once the game started.
Don Olson and Jon Caine
accounted for the Panthers other
pass interception and fumble
recovery, respectively. Caine
practically beheaded Gary
Blough, the Lakers quarterback,
when he sacked him to cause the
fumble which he fell on.
Danneffel and Polashak spelled
"double trouble" for Lake
Michigan Catholic all night long.
The senior duo ran with reckless
abandon, combining for over 200
yards rushing. Danneffel picked
up 116 yan^t on 31 carries, while
Polashak bulldozed for 91 yards
on 18 attempts.
Watervliet had 15 first downs
and 254 yards total offense.
Quarterback Dan Hutchinson
completed 2-of-5 passes for 20
yards. Olson caught both Panther
aerials.
The Panthers will take their 44)
record and number 10 ranking in
the Class " C AP poll to Eau

road game of the season.
