ENG 100 Introduction to English Composition
This course is an introduction to college-level essay writing emphasizing the writing process from
planning and drafting through revising and editing. Students refine their style of writing by focusing on
sentence structure and language usage and write essays displaying unity, support and coherence.
Students practice expository writing using a variety of rhetorical strategies. The exploration of writing is
examined through reading and analyzing essay models. Students develop a familiarity with research
tools.
Prerequisites: Prerequisite: Passing ENG 091 with a grade of C or higher and passing the ENG 096
departmental writing final examination essay or appropriate placement score. F/S/SU

1. The student will apply the pre-writing process

The student will identify different audiences and purposes for writing.
The student will practice brainstorming strategies that lead toward an essay plan for
each assignment.
2. The student will refine the style of writing, focusing on sentence structure and language
usage.

The student will recognize and write complete sentences using structural variety.
The student will practice punctuating to enhance the prose message.
The student will practice advanced grammatical concepts such as parallelism, modifier
usage, pronoun agreement and reference, and point of view.
3. The student will write essays displaying unity, support, and coherence.

 The student will construct clearly written thesis statements that extend beyond listing
supporting details (unity).
 The student will support the thesis statement with evidence.
 The student will offer details and examples to illustrate major points
 The student will conceptualize and apply an appropriate order (e.g., time, space,
importance) to connect ideas.
 The student will connect sentences and paragraphs together logically using transitions.
 The student will explore the multiplicity of ways a paper may begin and end, and write a
variety of introductions and conclusions that engage readers.
4. The student will practice expository writing using a variety of rhetorical strategies.

 The student will write essays progressing in difficulty using a variety of rhetorical
strategies (such as comparison/contrast and cause/effect).
5. The student will read and analyze essay models to improve writing.
