Community Service Giving HeARTs Installation Students from the Carl Ben Eielson Middle School Art Club, along with students from Clara Barton Elementary School, have created a heart-themed art installation at Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF) to help the organization celebrate the 9th annual Giving Hearts Day, an online 24-hour charitable giving campaign facilitated through Impact Foundation and DMF. This year’s campaign is slated for February 11. “Our primary creative focus was how the viewer would experience the art installation,” said Sharon Eide, Fargo Public Schools visual arts specialist and Clara Barton art instructor. To fulfill that goal, the installation was designed as a multi-dimensional work of art for the atrium space at the DMF building To begin the art project, Zach, a Clara Barton fifth grader, and paraprofessional Dina Schulz used a die-cut machine to make hundreds of different sized hearts from recycled magazines. The die-cut pieces were then folded and assembled to create three-dimensional hearts, and attached to long strands of ‘eyelash’ yarn to be hung from the ceiling. Zach and some of the die-cut hearts he created. More than 30 middle school students worked to complete the art installation pieces after school in both December and January. Three sections each of grade three and grade five students from Clara Barton also worked on the installation project during their art class time in December. All told, hundreds of hours have been given to the creation of this art installation. “Our students truly understand what it means to have helping hands and caring hearts,” said Maia Skarphol, Carl Ben Eielson art instructor. Appropriate, given the name of the community giving campaign. The art students and their instructors made the installation in the DMF atrium earlier this week, just in time to kick off the Giving Hearts community campaign. The public is invited to Dakota Medical Foundation, 4141 28th Avenue South in Fargo, to experience it for themselves. Continued, including additional photos...
