PURPOSE The purpose of this scholarship is to memorialize the passion and dedication David Montalvo had for Communities in Schools and the students served through the program. The mission of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to individuals pursuing higher education. The David Montalvo Memorial Scholarship principally targets two and four year academic programs. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE is based on financial need, participation in the CIS program, academic and attendance performance, and responses to personal essays. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS Communities in Schools of the South Plains, along with the Montalvo family, award scholarships on the basis of a comprehensive process. Areas that are reviewed by the committee include, but are not limited to the following: Participation in CIS Program, Financial Need, Grade Point Average, Attendance Record, and Personal Essay. Communities in Schools of the South Plains pays scholarship funds directly to the recipient’s school. Scholarships are awarded on a one-time basis. Communities in Schools of the South Plains awards the David Montalvo Memorial Scholarship without regard to race, color, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. Scholarships awarded are based upon the availability of funds and additional qualifying criteria. CRITERIA Applicants must have participated in the Communities in Schools program and therefore meet CIS enrollment qualifications. Applicants must be completing or have completed high school successfully with a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants must be accepted as a full time student at a college or university program for the upcoming academic semester. If scholarship money is awarded, this is the only program that will receive the funds on behalf of the applicant. Students must submit a copy (unofficial or official) of their most recent school transcript.
