Biology Class We are closely examining the DNA processes. I wanted to share a few interesting facts: We have approximately 21,000 - 25,000 protein coding genes. Everything in our body is connected to some type of protein activity. Our DNA is just an "instruction manual" on how to make proteins. Proteins are made of amino acids. Amino acids are made up of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen atoms. There are 20 different amino acids, that's the easy part! Some genes, contain 1,000 amino acids, the shortest has about 125 amino acids. THE LONGEST HAVING APRROX. 34,000 AMINO ACIDS. Remember amino acids make up proteins. Our body is made of 2 million different protein types. There is so much more, but I wanted the parents of my students to get a full picture of how awesome and very complicated our body is. Today we extracted DNA from peas. The students were amazed. Of course, we could not view the typical double helix because that is a representation of what is seen under an electron microscope. Back to the beginning, DNA’s basic purpose is to store information that leads to the manufacturing of proteins, which are used in thousands of processes and cells within our body. mhtml:file://C:\Users\OCCSSecretary\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\INetCache\Con... 2/27/2017 ❄Have a great week off❄ Page 10 of 15 Your kids are working hard to understand a very difficult topic.
