Holidays and Dementia
The holidays are a time when family and friends often come together. But for
persons living with Alzheimer's and other dementias, the holidays can be
challenging. Below are some recommendations from the Alzheimer’s Association:
Involve the person with dementia

Build on past traditions and memories. Focus on activities that are
meaningful to the person with dementia. Your family member may find
comfort in singing old holiday songs or looking through old photo albums.
Involve the person in holiday preparation. As the person's abilities allow,
invite him or her to help you prepare food, wrap packages, help decorate or
set the table. This could be as simple as having the person measure an
ingredient or hand decorations to you as you put them up. (Be careful with
decoration choices. Blinking lights may confuse or scare a person with
dementia, and decorations that look like food could be mistaken as edible.)
Maintain a normal routine. Sticking to the person's normal routine will help
keep the holidays from becoming disruptive or confusing. Plan time for
breaks and rest.

Speaker Series
“Mile High Heroes”
Join us on Tuesday, November 18th
for our monthly Speaker Series
by Full Bloom!
“The history of flight is the history of a
dream, the ability to soar through the
sky like a bird. The Wright brothers are known for their Kitty Hawk flights,
but what ever happened to their plane? In the 1920s, Barnstorming and the
Powder Puff Derby piqued the interest of many Americans who flocked to
the various air shows to see the daredevils of the air. How did “Lady Lindy”
get her name and who was known as the “Lone Eagle”? What was the U.S.
government’s main interest in aviation? Who was known as the “father of
naval aviation”? Do you know who was first to fly faster than the speed of
sound in level flight? This is a closer look at the advancement of aviation and
achievements of our Mile High Heroes!”
Art Class with the Students from Minnetonka High!
Join us Wednesday, November 19th at 3:30 for an
art class with the members of the Art Club at
Minnetonka Senior High School! We had so
much fun learning new art techniques and
painting with them last year and this year is to
be no different! They will be coming to Trails
monthly to work on various art projects with us!
Maybe we’ll even get the chance to visit the
high school again like we did last year to see
their school’s art gallery! Come join us and find
the inner artist in you!
JFK Assassination: The Mystery & Legend

you when you heard the news? This event still
sparks discussion and controversy. Join us on
Thursday, November 6th at 2:00 for a balanced
discussion of one of the pivotal events of the 20th
century. Our guest speaker is David Jones of
Minneapolis. He has been speaking to a wide range
of audiences since 1996. He has made over 400
presentations to more than 11,000 people.

Live Well Health Tip
According to Dr. Cynthia Green,
“Build your visual focus and memory
by playing some good old-fashioned
Concentration. Divide a deck of
playing cards in half, taking two of
each kind of card. Place all the cards
face down on a table. Now, turning
two cards over at a time, try to find
all the matching pairs. A German
study found subjects who became
proficient at the game boosted their
visual memory and overall IQ.” Join
us at our Cards & Games group every
week where we will have to put our
skills to the test in a game of
Concentration!

Riddle Me This:
I have many feathers to help me
fly. I have a body and head, I’m
not alive. It is your strength
which determines how far I go.
You can hold me in your hand,
but never throw.
What am I?
