been founded under the name of Salzgitter Mannesmann
Precision GmbH. As a leading European manufacturer Salzgitter
Mannesmann Precision offers a wide range of products and
services with great scope for intelligent, tubing-related solutions.

The Group-Structure

The concept
Over the last few years, designs have evolved
towards more complex coal-fired stations
(super critical and ultra-super critical). SMP has
been following that trend and developed products accordingly.

Applications of Multi Rifled tubes
Rifled tubes are used in high pressure boilers
to eliminate the steam film effect due to the
D. N. B. on the inner surface of the tube and
raise thermal efficiency in the furnace walls.

DNB
Rifled tubes in a conventional boiler provide a
larger margin of safety for natural circulation
and assisted circulation and many economical
advantages as:
• Reduction of weight for downcomers,
headers, drum and connecting pipe
• Reduction of pumps power
• Reduction of framework weight
Water
Besides standard designs, SMP has developed
tubular solutions with small outside diameter,
heavier wall thickness and improved rib profile
(Siemens design and others) to further improve
heat transfer and steam flow.

Three main criteria are key points of optimized profile:
As clean coal technology requires ever more efficient power
plants, we propose to our most demanding customers personalized and optimized profiles to reach their expected performances,
either according to Siemens’ or another design.
• optimized lead angle
Besides avoiding DNB phenomenon, optimized profiles allow to
significantly increase thermal efficiency.
• increased rib height
• maximized plane rib flank
Optimized profile combines advantages of “A“ and “B“ profiles
as lower rib width at top or a steep rib side angle.
We have been supplying thousands of metric tonnes of Multi
Lead Rifled (MLR) tubes for Ultra Super Critical power plants all
over the world since 2006.

Manufacturing process
Our manufacturing production flow
For over 40 years, SMP has been improving its manufacturing
process to match ever higher requirements of its customers.
Focus on ribbing process
Ribs are obtained through cold drawing process on a grooved plug
from hollows supplied by SMP mills. After drawing and ribbing
pass, tubes are heat treated to get specified metallurgical requirements.
Before final cutting, tubes are 100% checked by Eddy Current and
/or Ultrasonic test, depending on customer’s requirements.

Our tubes are manufactured in our plant located in Vitry-leFrançois (France) by our skilled and experienced workforce.
General information
High quality generates customer confidence and satisfaction and
contributes to a company’s economic performance.
Quality leadership is therefore the overriding objective and is
determinant to our corporate policy.
Our Quality Assurance System covers all stages of production at
all plants involved in the manufacture of our tubes, from the
steelworks via the tube and pipe hot rolling mills right through to
the company’s finishing lines and shipping departments.
In the production process of rifled boiler tubes, the quality chain
is taken over by Salzgitter Mannesmann Precision Etirage whose
Vitry-le-François plant is certified ISO 9001 (2000 version) and
ISO 14001 (1996 version).
