Pick up the Wallace ornament Posted: Friday, November 26, 2010 8:33 am The annual Wallace ornament is out and available to round out your Christmas tree. This year’s Wallace ornament features the Manheim building. They are for sale in several of the businesses around Wallace, including the Idaho Silver Shop on Bank Street. If you have any questions please call Rayma Shields at the Idaho Silver Shop by dialing 208-5561171. During the Great Fire of 1910 the U.S. Forest Service was located in the upstairs portion of the Manheim building. This was U.S. Forest Service Superintendent Weigle’s office before, and directly after, the Great Fire. This is the location where Ranger Ed Pulaski wrote his reports on his action during the Great Fire. Other trivia about this building highlights that it is the first structure built on 600 Bank Street after the devastating fire of 1889. This building is constructed of brick, mortar and steel. It survived the 1910 fire, as did most of the down town core. The Manheim Building was originally built to be a working man’s clothing store. By 1903 the Stewart Brothers established their drug store within the building. In the 1930s, when the Stewart Brothers moved, a billiards hall was located there in its place. For much of the life of the building it remained a billiards hall - Duke & Babe’s, Babe & Ted’s, Vern & Ted’s. Nora and Max Mason purchased the building in the mid 1970s and located a Sears catalogue store here. That business closed after Nora’s death in 1990. Shauna Hillman leased the building in 1992, purchased it in 2001 and is the fifth owner of this building in 120 years of its existence.
