RI.2.2 Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of
specific paragraphs within the text.

RL.2.2 Recount stories including fables and folktales from diverse
cultures and determine their central messages, lesson or moral.
3.2 Fables have special characteristics, like: one to three characters, usually animals with
human characteristics, short stories, and teach a moral or lesson.
RL.2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.
3.14 Readers understand what it means to compare and contrast. Here’s how: Compare and
contrast words and themes. Ask: How are __ the same? How are __ different?
RL.2.4 Describe how words and phrases (e.g. regular beats, alliteration, rhymes, repeated
lines) supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem or song.
RL.2.5 Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning
introduces the story and the ending concludes the story.
RL.2.6 Acknowledge differences in the points of view of characters, including speaking in a
different voice for each character when reading a dialogue aloud.
RL.2.9 Compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (i.e. Cinderella)
by different authors or from different cultures.

4.1 Readers locate specific topics in the text by using various text features (e.g., contents,
indexes, sub headings...) by asking: “What text features help you locate ___? How do they
help you?”
RI.2.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to grade 2
topic or subject area.
4.4 Readers figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words/phrases by looking for illustrations
and captions that help determine meaning.
RI.2.7 Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine
works) contribute to and clarify a text.
4.5 Readers find the meaning of unfamiliar words by using glossaries, computer dictionary,
and other resources. Identify unknown words by asking: “What we are able to infer the word
means? What does the glossary tell us?”
RI.2.8 Describe how reasons support specific points the author makes in a text.
