International Assembly
We celebrated an International Students Assembly recently and speeches were presented by two of our International Students

New Zealand, or what he is interested
in. Who knows what interesting things
you can learn from him? !
!
You could make a friend for the rest of
your life, and have the opportunity to
travel to his country one day, who
knows? So why not speak to that new
student in your class today? Make a
new friend. Invite him along to where
you usually have lunch, or to the field
for a game of touch. Why not?!
!
“I’m sure all of you have noticed the
difference in assembly today, a lot of
interesting faces, and accents sitting
up the front. Today, as Mr Mangan
mentioned, is international assembly.!
!
Just last week, the start of this term,
some of you might have seen new
students in your classes, and some
might have even been assigned a
buddy, to take around the school. You
might have noticed some of these new
students have different uniforms, some
of them are from countries you have
never heard of before and some of
them don’t speak English that well. !
!
While I’m sure most of the students
sitting here in assembly today have
seen these new students, how many of
you have actually approached one of
them and spoken to them? Asked them
what they think of New Zealand, what
they’re interested in or even what their
name is?!
!
We international students are here for
the same thing, to experience New
Zealand. To see breathtaking scenery,
e a t fi s h a n d c h i p s a n d m o s t
importantly, make great kiwi friends.
But for most internationals, English is a
barrier. It limits the full extent of what
we want to say sometimes simply
because we don’t know HOW to say it.
So some just choose not to say
anything at all. But YOU can help
change that. You can go to that new
international student in your class
today, and ask him what he thinks of
TBC
TAURANGABOYSCOLLEGE
New Zealand’s migrant population is
growing rapidly. For the year ended
June 2014 over a hundred thousand
people migrated to New Zealand, with
around sixty thousand coming from
Asia and Europe. New Zealand is
slowly becoming a global village. This
is also evident in our school, with 43
full-time and 23 short-term
international students, with students
f r o m G e r m a n y, Ta i w a n , J a p a n ,
Malaysia, China, Korea, Hong Kong,
Thailand and Spain, but we will not
achieve this without acceptance and
understanding.!
!
Everyone wants to have friends,
whether you’re in class, or at lunch or
after school. Because, for those of you
who have seen the production: “It’s
sad to be all alone in the world”.!
!
!!
!!
Thank you”!
Justin Chen!
“It has been an honour for us
international students to come up here
today and talk about our home
countries. Being an international
student can be fun but also
challenging, coming in to a country
where you know absolutely no one,
and where everyone is begging you to
drop the “F-bomb”, just so they can
laugh at your accent. But on a more
serious note, it is sometimes
challenging being an international
student. !
!
!!
!!
!!
!!
!!
!!
!!
!
Leaving your home behind to come to
a country that you have never heard of
and having to speak and learn a
language that you can’t understand is
a big step for most of the boys. But the
International Department and the
home-stays try their very best to make
us feel like its our second home. When
it comes to making friends many of the
international students managed to find
their pairs, when we go camping and
day trips as an International
Department. Now we are all good
friends and see ourselves as one big
international family. However many
seem to struggle when they are
making a kiwi friend. This is very
disappointing as one of our main
reason coming to another country is to
expand our friends globally as well as
studying. !
!
So I’m going to put out a challenge for
you boys to go and start engaging the
international boys. Ask them how their
day is going, go out and play a sport
on the field - become friends with
them. Because I’m sure that the
international boys want the same.!
!
Lastly, I would like to thank all the
teachers and the home-stays because
the support and the encouragement
help us achieve and overcome some
of the challenges of learning a new
language. !
!
!
Thank you”!

Sport - Congratulations
!
Surfing: The NZ Schools’ Surfing Championships were held recently in Raglan.
Schools from around New Zealand enter teams and a school’s overall points are
determined by its top 4 finishers. Each school can enter 10 surfers into the
event. The surf was in the range of head high to triple overhead so surfers were
tested in a variety of conditions and the finals were run in very solid surf.
Congratulations to our team who were placed 3rd. Jordan Griffin 2nd in the U18
category, William Davey 5th, Ihaia Ngata and Quinn Matenga 9th equal.!

Annual Sunrise Lions Debate!
11th August!
Moot: That the media has the most influence on today’s youth.!
Our team of James Thwaite, Grahame Woods and Adam Scott
(coached by Mr Gareth Cass) affirmed this, and won the debate. It was
a lively and topical debate, with teams ably counterpointing the others’
arguments. The audience was appreciative of the humour and ideas.
The debate revolved around the amount of influence that media outlets
have on youth and whether they are susceptible to this influence or
whether there are larger influences in their lives.!
Congratulations to Adam, Grahame and James - pictured right.
OPEN EVENING
!
A very successful and well attended evening was held on Tuesday 9th, with approximately 700 in attendance, which is our largest
turn out we have had over recent times. Year 8 boys and their parents and whanau were given an overview of the College before
being taken on a tour to view the many opportunities provided across a large number of curriculum areas. The highlight for many
was the opportunity to meet a number of our Year 12 leaders with many positive comments received during and following the
evening. !
!
Enrolment packs have been distributed to contributing schools. If you were unable to attend the Open Evening and do not have
an enrolment pack and wish to have one, please contact the College Office on 07 578 4029. Dates for out-of-zone enrolments
are available on our website.!
