continues to evolve.
In 2010, NGK SPARK PLUG Group formulated a longterm management plan - NITTOKU SHINKA-RON
( The Evolution of NGK SPARK PLUG ) . In this plan, we
define the ideal image of NGK SPARK PLUG in 2020 as
“a distinguished ‘Monozukuri’ company,” “a highly
profitable company,” “a progressive company,” and “a
human ‘assets’ company.” As a roadmap for realizing this
plan, we have divided the plan into three 3-year phases:
the 1st SHINKA (Delving), the 2nd SHINKA (Renovating),
and the 3rd SHINKA ( Evolving ) . The Group strives to
steadily progress through these three phases toward the
final goal of becoming a company that can offer “Real

Hydrogen energy is drawing increased attention as a solution for
global warming and energy shortage problems. NGK SPARK PLUG is
contributing to the new energy society through the development of
SOFC (solid oxide fuel cell) technology, which is a particularly efficient
type of hydrogen-based fuel cell. We are also accelerating
technological innovation in next-generation vehicles, with
safety-boosting hydrogen leak sensors and other devices for fuel cell
vehicles that are already coming to market.

Our willingness to take on challenges in new fields is like an engine that
drives our NITTOKU SHINKA-RON philosophy. We are developing products
in the fields of energy, where hydrogen and other alternative sources are
leading to increased diversification, and next-generation vehicles such as
fuel cell cars. In the environment field, we are developing lead-free
piezoelectric ceramics in anticipation of stricter regulations in countries
throughout the world. Furthermore, we are also working on products in the
medical field to meet the growing needs of an aging Japanese society. No
matter what the arena, we create products using our core ceramics-based
technology. We are also actively cultivating human resources to break new
ground. NGK SPARK PLUG is boldly challenging new business domains by
fully utilizing our accumulated technologies and manpower.

Stack
In addition to having the highest power generation efficiency among
all types of fuel cells, SOFCs (solid oxide fuel cells) promise benefits
such as compact size and low costs. NGK SPARK PLUG has
developed an SOFC stack for use in home cogeneration systems.

Fuel cell vehicles emit no CO2 and are known as the ultimate eco
car. However, there have been safety issues regarding the leakage
of hydrogen gas. As a solution to this issue, we have developed
sensors that detect hydrogen leaks by using hydrogen’s property
o f h i g h t h e r m a l c o n d u c t i v i t y. T h e s e s e n s o r s u s e M E M S
micro-heaters to achieve rapid startup and response, realizing
high-accuracy detection through a correction function for
temperature and humidity.
NGK SPARK PLUG has entered the medical field by developing
bone filling materials which utilize the properties of ceramics with
superior biocompatibility. Other developments include artificial
femoral heads and bone paste, as well as oxygen concentrators
for medical use. These oxygen concentrators are intended for
domiciliary oxygen therapy for patients with chronic respiratory
disease and other patients. Moreover, we have offered ultrasonic
wave oscillators used as a surgical knife and as a calculus
destruction. With our unique technology and approach, we will
ceaselessly strive to develop new products which create new
possibilities in the medical treatment.

Lead-free Piezoelectric Ceramics
The combined efforts of a various
workforce will yield further growth.
Piezoelectric ceramics produce electrical charge ( voltage ) when
external force is applied. Applying DC voltage causes the ceramics
to expand or contract in response to the current polarity. Applying
AC voltage causes vibrations to occur through repeated expansion
and contraction. With this ability to convert electrical energy to
mechanical energy and back again, piezoelectric ceramics are used
in a wide range of fields, from home appliances to industrial
equipment.
However, current piezoelectric ceramics contain large quantities of
harmful lead, and there is ongoing need to develop practical,
eco-friendly piezoelectric ceramics that do not contain lead. Our
company is currently working on practical products and devices
that use the lead-free piezoelectric ceramics that we have
developed.
The key to further growth of NGK SPARK PLUG is diversity of human
assets. We strive to create a workplace in which each employee can
assert their individuality and fully exercise their ability regardless of
gender, nationality, age, and whether or not they have a disability. We
believe that such a workplace will make employees happy and bring our
further growth. In particular, we actively provide support for female
workers. Currently, we have established the DIAMOND ( Gender
Equality) Project and are revising our systems to create an environment
which empowers female employees. We are also holding forums and
seminars to raise awareness among employees. These efforts were
evaluated highly and brought us the Award for Excellence as the 2014
Nagoya Women Employment Positive Company. By concentrating the
power of such diverse personnel, we are embarking on the DNA Project
to explore our next business themes. This company-wide project
examines product themes which will serve as a core for new
b u s i n e s s e s , e n c o m p a s s i n g e v e r y t h i n g f ro m d e v e l o p m e n t t o
commercialization. Numerous highly-motivated employees are
participating in the project and competing to create innovative plans.

Inherited Vision
Founding DNA
NGK SPARK PLUG was founded in 1936. However, our roots can be traced back more
than 130 years to the Morimura Gumi which was established in 1876 by Ichizaemon
Morimura, the forefather of the Morimura Group. Our founding father Ichizaemon
Morimura was an honest and passionate merchant. Determined to reclaim wealth which
had flowed overseas, Ichizaemon embraced the challenge of foreign trade for the
prosperity of Japan. Eventually, the Morimura Gumi began to manufacture ceramics and
the Morimura Group was born, ultimately leading to the founding of numerous prominent
companies including NGK SPARK PLUG.

As our business evolved from tableware to industrial products, we faced even stricter
demands for product uniformity. In order to constantly realize the performance need by
customers and to eliminate discrepancy among products, Magoemon Ezoe expected a high
level of discipline and sense of participation to produce quality products. Employees at all
workplaces devoted themselves to manufacturing which fulfilled such expectations. Even
today, the philosophy of producing quality products with participation by all employees is still
alive at NGK SPARK PLUG.

High-End Plugs for Aftermarket
Spark Plugs for Automobile and Motorcycle
Premium RX series plugs are the highest grade spark plugs
for Automobiles and have a ruthenium center electrode and
a ground electrode with a projected platinum tip to ensure
excellent ignitability and combustion efficiency. Iridium MAX
series plugs, meanwhile, have an iridium center electrode
and a platinum tip on the ground electrode, providing long
life. IRI series plugs are also available for modified engines.
NGK Spark Plugs include green plugs, projected plugs,
multiple ground electrode plugs and precious metal plugs
for Automobile use. Smaller diameter long-reach plugs
and Bi-Hex plugs engineered to meet diversification of
the engine are also available.
For Motorcycle, spark plugs which thread diameter is
10mm or 8mm are used to suit the engine design.

Racing spark plugs have been designed to withstand
severe operating conditions, such as high combustion
temperatures and pressures. Their superior performance
has been proven in motorcycle and car races in the
world, including Formula One, World Rally Championship
and MotoGP.

A very energy efficient and quiet oxygen concentrator. It
uses pressure swing adsorption to generate air with high
oxygen concentration. The concentrated oxygen is used
in home oxygen therapy, for patients suffering from
chronic respiratory diseases and other ailments.
New ceramics offer superior strength and biocompatibility,
making them optimal for artificial bones and artificial hip
joints. Bone paste is used in a clay-like state and then
hardens with time to fill in a variety of damaged areas.
Bearings use silicon nitride, thus realizing high rigidity
and reducing heating value caused by centrifugal force
and lessening of the friction coefficient. They are used in
ultra-precise high-speed bearings, thermal-resistant
bearings and semiconductor machinery.

NTK Cermet is a standard insert grade which is suitable
for semi-finish and finish turning of steel, general steel
(carbon/alloy steel), ductile cast iron and others, with
longer tool life and better surface finish. PVD coated
cermet has even better wear resistance.
Miniaturization of the main component WC hard grain
realizes toughness and hardness, as well as outstanding
cutting. Furthermore, PVD coated products offer superior
wear resistance and welding resistance, which can be
used for cutting a wide range of materials including
copper, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals and materials
for which machining is difficult.
Formed using CBN (cubic boron nitride) and a special
ceramic binder, this sintered compact maintains high
hardness at both normal temperatures and high
temperatures. There is also little chemical reaction
with the work material. Accordingly, this sintered
compact is optimal for high-speed finishing of ultrahard materials and normal cast iron.

With drill holders that are compatible with a range of
shapes and different kinds of drill tip coatings, these
multi–purpose throw away drills can be used even with
machines that have low horsepower or rigidity, due to
its low cutting force. They have excellent chip control
and provide accurate holes.
Compared to high speed steel endmills, these endmills
offer improved tool life and surface roughness and are
designed for reliable shaping and accuracy. Additional
machining operations - side cutting, diagonal cutting,
and helical cutting - are possible in addition to the
usual D-cut by adding a center blade.
For processing of aluminum parts at machining
centers (HFC, HPC, HSC, SFC, ALWC). Realizes high
efficiency and reduced costs by adding an HPC and
steel body (cutter diameter: φ40-100) to the
conventional HSC and special aluminum body (cutter
diameter: φ80-200 ).
