But there was still much we didn’t know about the Charter until a team of scholars led by UEA’s Nicholas Vincent transformed our understanding of one of the most important documents in our history. HOW WILL YOU MAKE YOUR MARK? www.uea.ac.uk/brilliant E L U R W A L F Professor Vincent and his colleagues were able to reveal the identity of those who wrote two of the original Charters of 1215 for the first time. The startling finding was that these were scribes employed not by King John but by bishops – revealing that churchmen were at the heart of events in 1215. “This serves as an important reminder”, said Professor Vincent, “of the ways in which our modern ideas of freedom, democracy and the rule of law emerged from a close co-operation between church and state.” ENQUIRIES T +44 (0) 1603 591515 E [email protected] www.uea.ac.uk/study/undergraduate www.uea.ac.uk/international 99% of research within the School of History is internationally recognised, with 77% rated 4* world-leading or 3* internationally excellent according to the Research Excellence Framework (REF2014), a major Government analysis of university research quality.
