“The history course offered everything I wanted
to study, and the library was brilliant for research.
It’s also very highly regarded, both academically
and by friends of mine who had been there before
me. The tutors were always very enthusiastic
and prepared to give time to offer any help
they could.”

YOUR
OPTIONS
At UEA, we aim to bring history
alive in the lecture hall and beyond.
Alongside your studies you’ll have the
opportunity to learn through site visits
and hands-on field work. Get a taste
of how American GIs experienced
World War II through the Eighth in the
East Project. Gain an understanding of
the tensions of European politics when
you visit Cold War communication
sites on the Suffolk coast.
Cross the channel and stand where
a starving and outnumbered English
army won a remarkable victory at
Agincourt in 1415. Or visit Rome and
walk in the footsteps of Charlemagne,
crowned emperor in St Peter’s
basilica by Pope Leo III.
You’ll also have the chance to gain
valuable work experience with
organisations including the National
Trust, Peak District National Park,
Norwich HEART, Norfolk and Suffolk
County Councils and the European
Parliament to name a few.
“As someone who loved history, I really wanted the opportunity to
develop that and learn more. And I liked politics and thought I’d like
to work in it in the future so a joint degree was perfect.”

Magna Carta is recognised as a powerful symbol of our
rights and freedoms. But there was still much we didn’t
know about the Charter until a team of scholars led by
UEA’s Nicholas Vincent transformed our understanding
of one of the most important documents in our history.

Professor Vincent and his colleagues were able
to reveal the identity of those who wrote two
of the original Charters of 1215 for the first
time. The startling finding was that these were
scribes employed not by King John but by
bishops – revealing that churchmen were at
the heart of events in 1215.
“This serves as an important reminder”, said
Professor Vincent, “of the ways in which our
modern ideas of freedom, democracy and the
rule of law emerged from a close co-operation
between church and state.”
