This Week in 3rd Grade Week of August 29th – September 2nd Comprehension Skill: Phonics Skill: Recount Stories and Fables, Literary Characters, & Illustrations Forming Plural Nouns Learning Targets: determine the central message, lesson, or moral and explain how it is conveyed through key details in the text recount means to retell stories can teach us a lesson or send us a message that relates life and the world around us morals are lessons that can be inferred from a story Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Explain how specific aspects of a text’s illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words in a story (e.g., create mood, emphasize aspects of a character or setting). Math: Language/Grammar: Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. Plural Nouns: A word that indicates that there is more than one person, place, thing, or idea. Describe how rocks can be classified according to their physical characteristics. Rules for Forming Regular Plural Nouns Regular Plural Nouns singular nouns – add –s (book-books) singular nouns ending in s, ch, sh, x, or z – add – es (bunch-bunches) singular nouns ending in a consonant y – change the y to i and add –es (baby-babies) singular nouns ending in a vowel y – add –s (monkey-monkeys) Students must know the rules & be able to change singular nouns to their plural form. Writing Focus: Writing a Personal Narrative A Personal Narrative is the recounting of a memory or event in sequential order. Vocabulary Words: ordinary – something that is usual or normal sneered – to smile or laugh while making a face that shows scorn rhubarb – a plant with green leaves and thick juicy pink or red stems that are used for food carnival – a traveling group that puts on a variety of amusements stitches – used for closing a wound
