Sacramental Life of our Parish
Baptism for children (under the age of 7) is celebrated in
English on the first three Sundays at 1 pm; in Spanish on
the last Sunday of the month at 1 pm; in Kreyol on the 3rd
Saturday at 1 pm. Parents attend a preparation session on
the first Monday of the month from 8 to 9:30 pm in the
church. Please call the Parish Center (334-0021) to make
arrangements to speak to one of our priests or deacons
about your child’s upcoming baptism.
Celebration of Marriage
Please call the Parish Center (334-0021) at least six
months in advance to make arrangements for an interview
with one of our parish deacons or priests who will meet
with the engaged couple, set the time and date of the
wedding, and make arrangements for our parish marriage
preparation program.
Rite of Christian Initiation
Adults who have never been baptized are prepared for the
reception of the sacraments of initiation (Baptism,
Eucharist and Confirmation) through the RCIA process.
Other adults may have already been baptized, but are
seeking to receive Eucharist and/or Confirmation. Those
interested in knowing more about the process of becoming
a full member of the Catholic Church are invited to call
Sister Ann Horn at 516-333-9434. Parents who have
school-aged children who have never been baptized are
also invited to speak to Sister Ann about their process of
preparation for these sacraments.
Sacraments of School Age Children
Our parish religious education program prepares children
for the celebration of the sacraments of Eucharist,
Reconciliation, and Confirmaton. The norm is that
children receive a two-year preparation for Reconciliation
and Eucharist (normally celebrated in the second grade)
and a two-year preparation program for Confirmation
(normally celebrated in the eighth grade). Our religious
education program deepens the experience of faith and religious formation in the years betweeen the celebrations
of these sacraments.
Parents who have children older than first grade and are
seeking to have them receive the sacraments of Eucharist
(First Communion), Reconciliation or Confirmation are
asked to call the Religious Education office.
Communion to the Sick and Homebound
Anyone who is not able to attend Mass because of frailty,
chronic or temporary illness, or admission to hospice can
have Holy Communion brought to them at home on a
regular basis. Please call the parish office to make
arrangements for a lay minister to bring holy communion.
Care for those in need. . .

Breaking Open the Word
Reflecting on next Sunday’s Gospel before you come to Mass can bring
so much more meaning to your experience of liturgy. Here’s the Gospel
for next Sunday. How does this Gospel touch your life?
January 22nd -Third Sunday in Ordinary Time
Matthew 4:12-23
When Jesus heard that John had been arrested,
he withdrew to Galilee.
He left Nazareth and went to live in Capernaum by the sea,
in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali,
that what had been said through Isaiah the prophet
might be fulfilled:
Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the way to the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles,
the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.
From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,
"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."
As he was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew,
casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen.
He said to them,
"Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men."
At once they left their nets and followed him.
He walked along from there and saw two other brothers,
James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John.
They were in a boat, with their father Zebedee, mending their nets.
He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father
and followed him.
He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the
kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness among the people.
6
In today’s gospel we see change. Jesus moves from Nazareth to
Capernaum and sees that what once worked no longer does and he
urges all to repent, to change their ways. We too must be open to
change in our lives. As the fishermen left their boats and nets, so
must we leave behind all that keeps us from being followers of
Christ’s ways.
Gospel Reflection
Questions
• Think of a time when you
were asked to do something
totally different from your
normal routine.
• Think of a time when you
felt you were coming out of
a place of darkness into a
place of light.
• Think of someone in
your life whom you would
follow with no questions.
Some Questions for
Families & Children
• Think of some things in
your life that can change.
• Think of how you can
help someone “find the
way”, perhaps there is
someone new in your
school, or in your
neighborhood.

Coming up: Women's
In-home Retreat during
Lent
We just finished Christmas -why are we talking about Lent?
We invite the women of our
parish to consider entering into a
beautiful retreat experience that,
as in the past, will take place in
the homes of our parishioners.
The scriptures of Lent so
wonderfully invite us into a
deeper encounter with the Lord
who loves us so. Soon we will be
asking for facilitators and people
who can offer their homes to host
a group of eight or so
participants. Please keep your
eyes for future announcements
about the women's retreat.
The Presepio needs
volunteers.
The twenty-fifth year of our
presepio was an exciting year in
that Newsday had listed it as one
of the "top ten" things to see
during the Christmas season. It
seemed that many more people,
visitors to Saint Brigid’s, came
by to see this beautiful work of
art! I think that our visitors also
received a sense of the warmth
and beauty of our Church overall.
Now we are in need some helpers
to assist us in the careful
disassembly of the presepio on
Saturday, January 21st from
10:00am to 4pm. Refreshments
will be served!.
Thanks to Saint Anthony’s
Our parish Saint Anthony’s
Society, in gratitude for the
future work that will take place
in the renovation of Saint
Anthony’s Hall, made a generous
donation of $2,000 towards the
capital campaign. Thank you for
your generosity to Saint Brigid’s!

Before ordination to the priesthood, I served full time as a
deacon in Saint Agnes Cathedral parish. At that time, we had a full
eighteen-month internship before our first priesthood assignment. All of
my classmates assumed, because I lived with the bishop (at that time
Bishop McGann), that I would have insider's knowledge of where we all
were going to be assigned as priests. I quickly found out how wrong my
classmates were. The morning after the personnel board meeting at which
the assignments were made for the newly ordained, I kept asking the
bishop if he would tell me where I was being sent. After two or three times
of ignoring the question, Bishop McGann looked up at me over his reading
glasses and said, "At your ordination, you promised me obedience and
respect." That ended that conversation in short order.
I guess I don't like to be on a "need to know" basis because I discover that,
for the most part, people who are in the know have already decided that, in
fact, I don't need to know. Knowing what lies ahead can give us the ability
to prepare for the outcome and even alleviate fear or anxiety -- or so we
think. Yet, as I look back on the assignment that I did receive when I was
first ordained, knowing about it ahead of time would not have prepared me
for anything. It would have only created more anxiety about an outcome
that I could not change. So, maybe it is better to be on a "need to know"
basis.
In today's gospel, John is giving testimony about the baptism of Jesus.
Repeatedly in his recounting what took place, John says, "I did not know
him." That affirmation seems rather strange coming from the mouth of the
Baptist -- after all, weren't John and Jesus somehow related? Why shouldn't
John have known ahead of time that his very relative would be the
promised one, the one who would come to baptize with the Holy Spirit and
fire? Why did John, of all people, need to be kept in the dark about all of
this?
I guess John was placed by God on a "need-to-know" basis. All John
needed to know is that the person upon whom the Holy Spirit would come
down would be the One. Were John to have been given the entire blueprint
as to how the salvation of the world would enfold and the importance of his
role, there would be little need on John's part to become attentive to the
Spirit. Putting John on a "need to know" basis was God's way of keeping
him as a fully engaged participant in the events that would unfold.
God so desires that we too be actively engaged in the unfolding of his plan,
and so, for God, it is so important that we not know everything -- that we
trust, and with open heart and expectant spirit, await what he is to
accomplish in us and for us. Yes, Lord, I do not need to know everything -all I need is to trust that everything is in your loving hands.

For the Love of Mercy - Capital Campaign
We continue to be in the “Redemption Phase” of the Campaign...
Parishioners have made pledges and some initial payments and others are making periodic
payments towards their Campaign giving goals.
Redemption Process: (how to make pledge payments) We’ve partnered with Lynch Development
Associates (LDA), the firm who helped us with our campaign. They will maintain the campaign
records and send our status letters and return envelopes each month. St. Brigid’s Business Office
will personally deposit and control all the funds, but we share a record of those gifts with LDA so
they can accurately manage our pledge records.
How to make your payment(s): On your payment interval (monthly,
quarterly, annual, etc.) you’ll receive a status letter and a return envelope
from Saint Brigid’s (via LDA). This letter will be perforated and we ask
you to write the amount of your payment, tear off the return form, and
return it via the mail or by placing it in the Saint Brigid’s collection
basket. If you are donating by check, please write “Capital Campaign” in
the memo section. If you send funds electronically, either through your
online bill paying service, through paypal, or Faith Direct, please make
sure to indicate “Capital Campaign” in the description on the electronic
item. This will ensure that your payments go to the proper parish fund.
Please Note:
Your status letter may
not reflect the most
recent payment
you’ve made, due to
timing issues.
Your recent payment
will appear on the next
month’s report.
When to make your payment: Ordinarily your status letter and return envelope will be generated
and sent during the first week of the month according to your payment interval.
Status letters will go out according to the following schedule:
January 2017- Monthly, Quarterly, Semi- Annually
February 2017- Monthly
March 2017- Monthly
April 2017- Monthly, Quarterly
May 2017- Monthly
June 2017- Monthly
