Bowel Preparation Instructions for
Afternoon Colonoscopy
You will need to purchase the following from the drug store:

One box containing 2 packets of Pico-Salax® (no substitutions).
Dietary Restrictions

7 days before your procedure avoid foods containing nuts or seeds, AND stop taking iron
pills or multivitamins containing iron.

2 days before your procedure start a Low Residue Diet (see reverse).

1 day before your procedure change from a low residue diet to a Clear Fluid Diet
(see reverse).

STOP drinking ALL fluids 1 hour before you are scheduled to arrive at the hospital.
Pico-Salax® Administration Instructions
(follow these instructions, NOT the instructions on the box)

Preparation: Mix 1 packet of Pico-Salax® in 1 cup (250 mL) of water and stir for 2 to 3
minutes before drinking. If solution becomes warm, wait for it to cool before drinking.

7:00 p.m. the night before your procedure take the first packet of Pico-Salax®.

8:00 a.m. the day of your procedure take the second packet of Pico-Salax®.
It is VERY IMPORTANT to drink at least 1 cup (250mL) of water or clear fluids every
hour you are awake after taking Pico-Salax®. If you do not drink enough water, your test
results could be affected and your procedure may have to be rescheduled and repeated.

strawberries, rhubarb, raw pineapple, dried fruits, candied fruits,
unpeeled raw fruits, fruits with seeds, jams or marmalades,
orange pulp, fruit cocktail

- soft fruits without skins and peeled melons
- canned fruits without skins
- baked fruits or applesauce
- fruit juice without pulp
Vegetables:

- soups made with dried peas, beans or lentils
