Adjudicators
Ben Brooks is one of the most respected and versatile instrumental
music teachers and directors in the region. He taught band, string
orchestra, symphony orchestra, and jazz band at Reynolds High School
for over 30 years and consistently achieved excellence with every group
that he taught. He has a vast knowledge of all styles of music and
musical interpretation. His bands and orchestras consistently placed
among the top groups at the State Band and Orchestra competition
every year. Mr. Brooks has been recognized on numerous occasions for
the outstanding accomplishments of his groups along with excellence in
teaching and service to the profession. Mr. Brooks retired from full time
teaching in June 2011.
Diane Chaplain is a solo artist and chamber music cellist, a
dedicated conductor and a nurturing music educator. She is the Director
and Conductor of Rose City Youth Orchestras, is on the faculty at
Lewis and Clark and Linfield Colleges and is Program Coordinator for
the Chamber Music Camp of Portland, where she conducts the
advanced orchestra. She tours around the U.S. as a featured member of
the Portland Cello Project, with whom she is also the Director of
Educational Outreach, and can often be heard in solo and chamber
music performances in the Portland area. Diane has taught at Yale
University, Bard College and Oberlin Conservatory, and has given
master classes in the US, Canada, Mexico, The Netherlands, Bosnia and
Russia. She holds degrees from the California Institute of the Arts and
The Juilliard School.
Dijana Ihas is an Associate Professor of Music Education at Pacific
University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in
music education, serves as an applied viola instructor, and supervises
student teachers. She is a founder, serves as a director and is a master
teacher of the String Project, the first program of its kind in Oregon. Dr.
Ihas’ educational background includes a PhD in music education from
the University of Oregon, master’s degree of music education from the
University of Arizona, master of fine arts in viola performance from the
University of California, Irvine, and bachelor’s degree in viola
performance from the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In addition, she holds a K-12 music teacher license and is a registered
SAA Suzuki violin/viola teacher. Prior to her position at Pacific
University, Dr. Ihas taught strings and symphony orchestra at Sprague
High School, where her advanced high school string orchestra won the
Oregon State Championship for three consecutive years and the Mark
of Excellence for two consecutive years. In her final year at Sprague,
the full symphony orchestra co-directed by Dr. Ihas won the state
championship as well.
Deborah Ward has been a teacher of music for the past forty
years. She taught in private schools for eight years and with the
Salem Keizer schools for an additional 22 years in general music,
strings, band, and high school choral music, and the final 12 years
in String Orchestra and Full Symphony at McNary High School.
She has also taught private Cello students for the past 40 years
and has directed groups with the Salem Youth Symphonies
Amadeus Players and Mozart Players for 26 years.
