What are you doing to minimize stillborn calves?
Two of the biggest headaches, as well as financial distress, on a dairy can be found
right in the calving pens—calving complications and stillborn calves. Studies have
demonstrated that cows and heifers that have a difficult calving tend to have impaired
fertility and reduced production in the following lactation. Stillborn calves also have a
significant effect on a dairy’s bottom line. There are tools available to help minimize the
impacts of calving complications and stillborn calves on dairies through sire selection.
Service sire calving ease (SCE), which measures the percentage of difficult births
expected in first calf heifers, has been available since 1978. In 2003, daughter calving ease
(DCE), which measures the ability of a bull’s daughters to calve without difficulty, became
available. Genetic evaluations for service sire stillbirths (SSB) and daughter stillbirths
(DSB) were introduced in August 2006. These traits identify sires that tend to produce more
live calves, as well as sires whose daughters tend to give birth to live calves.
Information to create these genetic evaluations for calving ease and stillbirths is
collected through the National Association of Animal Breeders (NAAB) calving ease
program. Dairy producers collect information on these traits on farm and provide it to their
Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) supervisor. DHI provides the raw data to NAAB to
calculate these genetic evaluations. As an ABS Cornerstone member, it is very important
that you record complete and accurate calving ease and stillbirth scores on ALL fresh cows
and heifers.
The genetic evaluations for SCE, DCE, SSB, and DSB can be important management
tools on a dairy. By providing such data, you help maximize your ABS Cornerstone credits,
as well as enhancing future sire selection opportunities in your herd to help increase herd
health and profitability!
In order to be sure you are providing complete and accurate data, it is important to
understand what all should be recorded with each fresh event on your dairy. The following
are the key pieces of information to be included: calving date, sire ID, dam’s sire ID, calf
sex, calving ease score and stillbirth score.

Why Jerseys in the Holstein Cornerstone Bull Book?
Today, several Holstein herds are now milking a number of Jersey cows. It may be just a few, or a significant
percent of the herd, but the trend toward inclusion of Jersey females in herds that were traditionally all
Holstein is unmistakable—and a trend that is likely to increase over time.
NAAB members report that between 2003 and 2008 domestic semen sales for Holstein semen increased by
27%, while domestic Jersey semen sales for the same period increased 64%. The Jersey breed is expanding
rapidly in the U.S.
ABS Cornerstone Jersey young sires are simply the best in the business. The August 2009 Jersey Genetic
Summary from AJCA lists several hundred unsummarized bulls in A.I. born since December 31, 2006. When
sorted by Genomic JPI, ABS has offered 40% of the top 30 bulls.
Therefore, knowing that your Holstein herd may already include some Jersey females (or possibly could in the
future), it would seem appropriate to provide you with information on the industries finest young Jersey bulls.
