Assessment and Moderation

Assessment and Moderation
Newsletter for January 2017
2nd Issue
Welcome to 2017 and
Happy New Year!
In this newsletter there is a time
line of events for Slough, which includes moderator training for potential moderators. I would like to
thank some local schools in different parts of Slough for their support. We are providing some moderation/work scrutiny for Key Stage
1 and 2. If you are interested in
attending them please book those
sessions, through the normal channels. There is also training through
most of the academic year linked to
this years testing and moderation
procedures.
By the time you have read this
newsletter the moderation handbook
for Key Stage 1 and 2 should be
nearly ready. In the new handbook
there are a few new procedures
i.e. ‘re moderation.’
For appeals this year, we will have
partnered with another local authority. It’s my pleasure that we
Page 1
will be teaming up with Maria
Coles at Hillingdon LA.
There may be some slight
changes over the next term but
you will be informed if there are
any. The training PowerPoint
slides, from the autumn term,
are on the Slough website. You
will find them on:

Arrangements for
2017
I have had some considerable interest by teachers to become
moderators. If you are still interested in becoming a moderator
please book onto the relevant
training day. There are limited
spaces.
This year, potential moderation
training will take place in March.
There will be separate training for
Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

helps the moderators to decide which children
should be moderated for the working below,
working at and working at greater depth. It
helps making sure our chosen sample reflects
your school. It ensures there is a balance of ethnicity, gender, regular attendees and SEN as well
as the 3 standards.
It also provides an opportunity for the moderators to inform the schools the names of pupils,
whose work is to be moderated, 24 hours prior
to the visit. In the past this has helped year 2
and 6 teachers with preparation for the visit.
However, this is not a statutory requirement.
This has to be a local agreement. If you feel
that giving the data prior to the moderation is
worthwhile can you please send me an email saying so. I have to make sure that local schools are
in agreement to continue this practice.

ed and referred to during the visit. LA appeals processes must include an independent moderation by a different LA
using only the evidence seen by the LA during the visit (providing additional evidence
is not allowed)
Independent work
This has been clarified.
This is direct from the STA- independence is:
If informed by clear learning objectives and limited success criteria which are not over-detailed
and do not over-aid pupils
If produced by pupils who have independently
drawn on classroom resources such as dictionaries, thesauruses, word banks, classroom displays,
books or websites for support or ideas
If independently edited and / or redrafted by
the pupil. This may be in response to self, peer,
or group evaluation
It is not independent if:
Supported by success criteria that are overdetailed and over-aid pupils by directing pupils to
include specific sentences or phrases
Edited as a result of direct intervention by a
teacher or other adult, for example where the
pupil has been directed to change specific words
for greater impact, or where incorrect or omitted punctuation has been indicated
Produced with the support of electronic aids
that automatically provide correct spelling, synonyms, punctuation, or predictive text
Assessment and Moderation
Again you can always teach like this. Its not
telling you not to teach this way, as most pupils
will need some direct intervention to help them
move forward.
