The letter was written from a hospital in Cairo on 16th May 1915. (The letter has been sourced from Australia Post archives.) “At last the long looked for day arrived and word came that we would shortly be fighting in the Dardanelles and that the 3rd Brigade were to be the advanced guard and effect the first landing and drive the Turks back from the beach so as to make it safe for the other troops to land. I can tell you we appreciated the honour of being picked to perform that most difficult operation of landing on an open beach in the face of opposition.” “A & C Company were chosen from the 11th so you see we were going to be the very first to land.” “The Navy guaranteed to put us ashore but couldn’t guarantee to take us off again, so you know what that means, and we knew what we were going to. I can honestly tell you that for untried troops the Australians are the bravest men I have ever met.” What are your initial impressions of this letter? Write some words that describe your thoughts as you read it. How do you think William was feeling at this stage? The moon was shining brightly and we could see the dark line of hills on the shore of Gallipoli. Everything was quiet and not a sound was to be heard except that of the propeller of the ‘Pinnac’ which was towing us (6 boats tied in a line) around until the moon should go down and the first light of day came over the sky. By that time we were about half a mile from the shore so we made a dash for it. When about 200 yards away, two shots rang out in quick succession fired by the Turkish sentries on the hills. The bullets cut the water near us. We were then in a line parallel with the beach. The ‘Pinnac’ cut the rope that fastened us to it and made back for the warship, our boats also cut themselves loose from each other and turned for shore. By this time the noise of machine guns and rifle fire was simply deafening and the bullets were whizzing by our heads like flies. Our only hope was to get ashore and we pulled like demons, but although we could have only been a few minutes it seemed hours before we eventually got there.” How do you think William was feeling now? How do you think you would be feeling in this situation? Page 5
