So thankful to have nicer weather coming our way and signs of spring upon us. We have started our community helper unit, so please stayed tuned for more information on our walking field trips to the fire station, post office, and library. In math, we are learning about measurement using linking cubes to measure and estimate how long items in the classroom are. We are also learning about basic addition and counting by two’s to 10. In reading, we are continuing to learn new site words every week and read simple sentences. We are writing more every day and your student's writing is getting much better! The children are excited to see the sun and to play outside. In the classroom we continue to work on learning the letters of the alphabet. We are working on writing them and practicing the sounds they make. The children are experts on coming up with words for the new letter sounds! This months’ letters are Zz and Jj. Our last two letters! We will review all of the letters after we finish with Z and J. In math we will be completing Topics 11 and 12 this month. We will be decomposing numbers from 11-19 using a set of 10 and some ones. We will be working on measurement; comparing lengths, heights and capacity. In reading we continue to read stories and talking about the characters, setting, plot and the parts of the book. We talk about new words and use the new words in our own sentences. In religion we continue to talk about being a member of God’s family, making good choices in our lives, loving God, loving and helping others and being a good neighbor. Our class mass will be April 20th and the students should continue practicing their mass parts. We will be practicing in the church the first part of the month in preparation. April is going to be a busy month!! FIRST & SECOND GRADE It is hard to believe that we are into the fourth quarter already! The year seems to be flying by. The students are already looking forward to summer break. With the time change I know it becomes difficult to get the students to bed on time, but please make this a priority, as sleepy students do not do their best. The first graders are working on place value to the tens, and the second graders are working on place value to the hundreds. Second graders continue to work on memorizing their addition facts and will start subtraction soon. In science we have learned about gravity and lift. We will plan to fly kites to see both in action as soon as the weather warms up. We are all working hard on our Lenten Sacrifices. Students have each given up something and chosen to do something nice as well. Some sacrifices have proven to be easier than others, but they are all working hard. Be sure to keep a conversation going at home to help them with their journey to grow closer to Jesus. 3RD & 4TH GRADES AND 3-6 MATH The beginning of spring finds the third graders completing fractions and beginning their math topic about two-dimensional shapes and their attributes. They will be working with angles, polygons, triangles, quadrilaterals, and making new shapes. The fourth graders just started their longest topic of the year by adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, changing improper fractions to mixed numbers and mixed numbers to improper fractions, adding and subtracting mixed numbers, and decomposing and composing fractions. The fifth graders are also working with improper fractions and mixed numbers as well as estimating mixed numbers. Geometry has now entered the picture in sixth grade math. After learning basic geometric ideas, the sixth graders learned to measure and draw angles. Vertical, congruent, adjacent, complementary, and supplementary angles will next be part of their new math vocabulary. Their geometry topic will end with learning the transformations of figures, congruence, and symmetry. In language arts the third and fourth graders are practicing abbreviations and how to use commas in a series. Both classes read biographies and then made a list of questions to ask their partners so they could then write a biography about that person. Everyone enjoyed typing their biographies and reading them to the class. In science both grades are completing their study of the Earth. This included the Earth’s layers, weathering, erosion, renewable and nonrenewable resources, as well as weather and climate. They found out that planet Earth is quite an exciting and interesting place to live. 5th & 6th GRADES AND SOCIAL STUDIES AND RELIGION During Lent we follow Jesus. This Lent we are going to follow Jesus through the streets of Jerusalem the week before his death. As we go, we will remember the events of that special week. Each day of the week that we do not go to Mass, the entire school meets in the school gym. After the pledge and school prayers, the sixth graders lead the school by praying the words Jesus taught us the: “Our Father.” Next one of the six graders reads the Bible reading. All the six graders then lead the school in the prayer for the day from their booklets. We will follow Jesus all around Jerusalem remembering his sacrifice and how much he loved us. In religion classes the fifth and sixth graders are continuing to explore how God formed a family of faith. We have identified and described various episodes in Jacob’s life. We described how God guided Jacob and brought good from his deceit. We discovered that God will guide us as he did Jacob. The third and fourth graders are learning how to recognize our need for God’s mercy. We described the steps in celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We explained that we can go to Jesus when in need of forgiveness and mercy. We understand that our consciences enable us to distinguish good from evil. We realize that we should choose whatever our consciences recognize as good. In world history the fifth and sixth graders are studying the "Early People". In our lessons we analyzed the development of city-states in Sumer. We examined Sumerian innovations and changes made to meet needs. We also examined the Sumerian social classes. In our next lesson we explored how conquests led to empire building in Mesopotamia. We analyzed how rulers gained power and kept order in Mesopotamia. In Ohio history, the third and fourth graders have identified the Historic Native Americans of Ohio. Those tribes were the Iroquois, Mingo, and the Wyandot. We described the ways of life of Ohio’s early Native American groups. Next, we identified the Algonquian tribes of Ohio. We described the similarities and differences among Ohio’s Historic Indian groups. Those groups included the Delaware, Ottawa, Shawnee, and Miami. In language arts, we continue to read stories based on the theme of courage. We heard a story called “Storm at Tempest Cove” by Margaret Underwood. This is a story about a boy in Scotland who helps save two fishing boats during a dangerous storm. We are currently getting ready to read our next selection “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle” by AVI. In science we are now working in the area of Earth Science. In our current lesson our topic is minerals and rocks. We have learned to identify minerals by their properties. We discussed the formation of igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks. SAVE, SAVE, SAVE: Thank you to all of you who save Campbell’s Soup labels and the General Mills “Box Top for Education” coupons. Your support is greatly appreciated! Some reminders: Please do not send in the entire label. The company will not accept them anymore. Campbell’s will only accept the UPC code (include the scholar holding the pencil, also). General Mills will accept only those box tops that have been cut on the dotted line. Your help with this matter will be greatly appreciated, since this is a monumental task when we receive the volume of labels and box tops that we do. Please drop them off in the school office or in the box at the back of the church. Here is an example of what we need: PTO: Mark your calendars for the upcoming annual "Fish Fry" on Friday, April 7th from 5:00-7:00! We will be asking families to help donate some of the supplies like we did for the spaghetti dinner. It made it even more of a success having the donations. Thank you in advance for all of your generosity. The list of donations came home to you at the end of March. Please watch your child’s folder ☺. Come to our April meeting right after school in the school library. We would love to see more people come to the meetings. We need your input! CAN DAYS: FRIDAY, May 12 WEBSITE: Please remember to visit our school website, http://www.sacredheartcoshocton.org/school/ for our monthly newsletter, lunch menu, etc. The first page of our newsletter has listed all the important dates and information for the month. A non-Catholic student pays $3300 a year or $275 a month. If you are able to help with any portion of this cost, or you would like to just make a donation, please make your check out to “Sacred Heart School” and drop it off at the school office, mail it to 39 Burt Avenue, or put it in the collection basket and label it “Adopt a Student”. We really appreciate your help! We will keep you all in our prayers as we continue to provide a quality Catholic education for the children of our parish and Coshocton County.
