Warm-up
Answer the questions.
• Do you like travelling? What are your favourite places?
• Have you ever stayed or lived on an island? If so, where?
Reading
Find out here what it’s like to live on some of the world’s most unusual islands and
answer the questions below.
Manhattan
Did you know that …
• from 1789 to 1790, New York City was
briefly the capital of the USA.
• the Dutch bought Manhattan from the Native
Americans for about $24.
• Central Park in the middle of Manhattan
covers a larger area than the principality of
Monaco.
• Manhattan is the most densely populated
county in the USA, with over 1,537,195 peo ple living in an area of 59.47 km².
• while 88% of Americans have cars and only
5% use public transport, in Manhattan 72%
use the subway or buses and only 18% drive
to work.
• Would like to live in Manhattan? Why? / Why not?
Newfoundland
Newfoundland lies off the north-east coast of
Canada and is the world’s 16th largest island.
It has two national parks, and is a popular
place for hiking and camping in the summer,
and skiing in the winter.
The island is also famous for its wildlife.
It has over 300 different species of birds.
Most popular though is the large population
of humpback whales in the waters around the
island. You can take a tour and watch them
rise right out of the water – a spectacular
sight given that each whale weighs around
36,000kg and measures up to 16 metres in
length!
• Do you think people should protect whales? Why? / Why not? ►

Tristan da Cunha
The world’s most remote settlement is a group
of islands called Tristan da Cunha in the south
Atlantic Ocean. The islands have a population
of 271 people.
When you live in the most isolated place in
the world, however, getting help is never easy.
With no runway, the British territory’s only
physical link to the outside world is a monthly
boat service that takes a week to travel 2,800
kilometres from Cape Town in South Africa
with the mail.
So, when the island’s only doctor sent an
urgent request for asthma medicine in December 2007, there was no time to lose. A message was passed from the island to the RAF
Air Rescue Centre in Scotland which then had
to find ships or aircraft to deliver the medicine.
The last time there was an emergency on the
island was in 1961, when a volcano erupted
and the entire population had to leave.
• Do you like isolated places? Why? / Why not?
