Fun Facts about YOUR Skeleton
A Bone that Can Hear!
The human skeletal system helps in hearing. Surprised? Yes, bones play an important
role in the mechanism of hearing. The three ear bones or ossicles; the malleus, incus
and stapes in the middle ear, play an important role in helping us hear sounds.
Are Bone Cells Living or Dead?
You may think bones are made of calcium, hard as a rock, so obviously they must be
dead cells. Wrong. Bones are very much alive and have their own network of nerves and
blood vessels to keep them alive and supply the much-needed nutrition.
The longest bone of the body is the femur bone or the thigh bone. The thigh bone makes
up one-quarter of your body's height.
There are 27 bones in the human hand and 14 bones make up your face.
The number of bones in your neck and the number of bones in a giraffe's neck is the
same!
There are about 230 movable and semi-movable joints in your body.
The only bone without a joint in your body is the hyoid bone present in your throat.
Did you know your height depends on the growth of your bones? If you are a girl, your
bones will keep growing till you are about 16 years old and the bones of boys grow till
they are about 18 years old. Therefore, if you wish to be a tall individual, it is very
important to eat healthy foods and drink as your bones need nourishment to grow. If
you give your bones the right nourishment, they will grow well, making you tall and
good-looking.

Injuries and Disorders of the Skeletal System
Fracture
Of the many skeletal system injuries, fracture is the most common, which occurs due to
breakage of a bone. The breakage can be complete or partial, depending upon the intensity
or severity of the impact and other pathological factors.
Sprain
Sprain is a severe painful injury to a ligament or tissue that covers a joint. It is one of the
most common types of injuries of the skeletal system that occurs due to a sudden wrench
that stretches or tears the tissues of the ligaments, causing swelling in the affected area.
Osteoporosis
Of the many skeletal system disorders, osteoporosis is the most common disorder that
occurs due to loss of bone tissue, hormonal imbalance, genetic disposition, etc. It's
commonly observed in elderly people and in women, and results due to reduction in calcium
and phosphorous deposition in the bones.
Arthritis
Arthritis is a common joint disorder caused due to inflammation of the joints in the body.
It's characterized by pain, swelling, stiffness and tenderness in the infected part. Aging,
injury, infection, mineral deficiency or hereditary factors are some common causes of
arthritis. It is primarily observed in old people as the cartilage covering the joints (to protect
the bones from getting damaged or ruptured due to friction) does not develop properly.
Scoliosis
It's a skeletal system disorder which causes an abnormal curve ('s' or 'c' shape) of the spine
or backbone. In most cases, the cause of scoliosis is unknown (idiopathic), however it
becomes apparent during adolescence and usually affects girls more than boys.
Rickets
Rickets is a skeletal system disorder that causes bowed legs in children due to deficiency of
vitamin D and calcium.
1. Where does arthritis affect the body?
2. If you have an abnormal curve in your spine (‘s’ or ‘c’ shaped curve) you may have
3. What part of your body have you injured if you have sprained it?
4. What is a common disorder of the skeletal system that may occur due to loss of
bone tissue?
5. What is the name of the disease that causes bowed legs in children due to a
lack of vitamin D and calcium?
6. If you have broken a bone, what would your doctor diagnose it as?
