Let’s start with a small story of two pupils, at
ancient times once at Gurukul, there were two
pupils. First pupil used to believe in luck and
second pupil believed in karma (hard work).
Once both pupils had an argument on what is
stronger luck or hard work and this argument
reached to their Guru. After listening to their
argument Guruji locked both into a dark room
together but they were adamant about their
opinion. After spending a day both were
famished but without any hint of light it was not
doable for them to locate food. First pupil didn’t
put efforts as he believed that he will get food
by luck and the second pupil who believed in
karma started searching for food in that dark
room. By hard work second pupil got an apple
and some pieces of stone. He had that apple
and threw stones to first pupil for teasing. Next
morning Guruji freed them and inquire about
their experience. Pupils explained the night but
were still having same opinions. To clarify their
doubt, Guruji asked them to check those stones
again. Those stones were real diamonds. Now
first pupil was pleased, but Guruji explained
that luck may give you diamonds but it is only
possible in the light of knowledge to know the
value of it. Hard work may give you apple but it
leads you in life. Both may be important in life.
In the country of Gods and religions, one could
easily believe in 'luck'. Wherever you go, you
will hear this kind of stories and people use the
Dedicated Efforts Lead To Luck
term 'Luck' so casually as if it is something
factual, something significant. One can relate
luck with spiritual power, God, destiny or
fortune. People believe that all the actions and
achievements of one's life are prewritten by the
Creator. I would say that luck does exist, but it
has no rhyme or reason and is nothing more
than a word that we have attached to a
situation where success or failure is brought on
by chance rather than actions. It exists because
things do happen by chance instead of by action
or intention. People often talk about 'luck'
when someone achieves something. They do
not take into account the hard work put in by
the successful person. Actually there are two
forces that have an effect on any individual
success. First is dedication i.e. the individual has
to put in his best efforts to accomplish the
desired goals and objectives and second is the
favourable circumstance, which often may
facilitate in achieving success. When external
forces favour, one can attain his goals and
objectives with less efforts. That external force
is nothing but 'luck'. However, if you don't work
hard and achieve success due to the favorable
so-called external forces such as 'luck' your
success will not last long enough.
I am a true admirer of the philosophy of Cause
and Effect relationship. I believe everything
happens for a reason. For Example if I went out
for a walk in the dark at night and I fell due to
low visibility that doesn't mean I am unlucky, it
is because I didn't take necessary precautions.
All the results we get have a relationship with
the efforts we put in the past. Take an example
that you went for an interview and face a
panelist who knows you well. You will surely be
doing fine in the interview and may get the job
opportunity. It is a favourable situation for you
and you may feel lucky about it. But you should
think in a different manner i.e. how the
interview panelist knows you before. It is purely
an outcome of your past efforts. Various
philosophers and thinkers have suggested us
that whatever we do in present will have an
effect on the future. We should always have a
track of our efforts and actions. Being lucky
does not happen by luck it happens by having a
positive attitude in life, working hard and
sharing yourself with others. This has been
proven in numerous studies and time and time
again it has been shown that changing your
thoughts really does change your luck. So
always put your dedicated efforts to attain your
objectives in life and get ready to be lucky!!!

Organizational Learning Theory
Hawthorne Effect
Two of the most noteworthy contributors to the field of
organizational learning theory have been Chris Argrys and
Donald Schon. Organizational learning (OL), according to
Argrys & Schon is a product of organizational inquiry. This
means that whenever expected outcome differs from actual
outcome, an individual (or group) will engage in inquiry to
understand and, if necessary, solve this inconsistency. In the
process of organizational inquiry, the individual will interact
with other members of the organization and learning will
take place. Learning is therefore a direct product of this
interaction.
Argrys and Schon emphasize that this interaction often goes
well beyond defined organizational rules and procedures.
Their approach to organizational learning theory is based on
the understanding of two (often conflicting) modes of
operation:
Espoused theory: This refers to the formalized part of the
organization. Every firm will tend to have various instructions
regarding the way employees should conduct themselves in
order to carry out their jobs (e.g. problem solving). These
instructions are often specific and narrow in focus, confining
the individual to a set path. An example of espoused theory
might be "if the computer does not work, try rebooting it and
then contact the IT department."
Theory-in-use: This is the actual way things are done.
Individuals will rarely follow espoused theory and will rely on
interaction and brainstorming to solve a problem. Theory in
use refers to the loose, flowing, and social way that
employees solve problems and learn. An example of this
might be the way someone actually solves a problem with
their computer by troubleshooting solutions, researching on
forums, asking co-workers for opinions, etc.
The Hawthorne experiments were a series of studies on the
productivity of workers, wherein various conditions were
manipulated (pay, light levels, humidity, rest breaks, etc.).
Surprisingly, each change resulted in a productivity rising,
including eventually a return to the original conditions. This
was true of each of the individual workers as well as of the
group mean. One interpretation, mainly due to Professor
Elton Mayo and associates F.J. Roethlisberger and William J.
Dickson, was that essentially, it was the workers' feeling they
were being closely attended to which was the cause of the
improvements in performance. This is now referred to as
"The Hawthorne Effect". Thus these experiments were
among the first indications that any productivity model must
factor in intangible attributes such as human behavior. It's
important to understand two more concepts to understand
the Hawthorne Effect properly and accurately. The YerkesDockson Law and the Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility.
While motivation does increase productivity up to a certain
point, any more motivation (example salary) would not be
effective due to saturation of utility. Thus, one must not rely
solely on the Hawthorne model to raise productivity but
rather complement it skillfully with other motivation
attributes, like job redesign, job enlargement, and raising
production capability via means such as learning
organization culture.
Related to the Hawthorne effects are:
Ÿ The Pygmalion Effect. This refers to self-fulfilling
prophecy situations in which students performed better
than other students simply because they were expected
to do so by their teachers.
Ÿ The Placebo Effect. This is the phenomenon that a
patient's symptoms can be alleviated by an otherwise
ineffective treatment, apparently because the individual
expects or believes that it will work. This effect can be
dealt with by using double-blind trials.
