Oh Grandma!
A dying grandma tells her grandchild, "I want to
leave you my farm. That includes the barn, livestock,
the harvest, the tractor, and other equipment, the
farmhouse and $24,548,750.45 in cash." The
grandchild, absolutely floored and about to become
rich says, "Oh grandma, you are SO generous! I
didn't even know you had a farm. Where is it?" With
her last breath, Grandma whispered, "Facebook..."

Message from the CEO
With the continued support of our Board of Directors and a huge effort by both our dedicated
front line staff and our administration, MCRI has managed to have another extremely busy and
successful year.
Our Children’s Services at Dominion and Railway provided support to 10 different youth over
the last 12 months, with several moving on to adult placements outside of MCRI. These
valuable community residence resources were not only able to provide ongoing support to our
permanent members but also some emergency and relief placements when needed for our
partners at Social Development. These programs were successful this year in spite of facing
many challenges, so congratulations to all our staff working in these residences for their
ongoing dedication. We certainly expect to have many challenges again next year, including
ensuring continued support and cooperation for these placements from other community
resource partners.
The Alternate Family Living Arrangement (AFLA) also had a successful year and continues to
provide a family based residential support service model that is a key component of MCRI’s
overall service mission. Although the overall number of members served by this program
remained the same there were many compliment changes over the last year.
The Supported Independent Living Program (SILP) continues to grow and diversify its services in
order to support a wider range of people needing support from MCRI. This program will
continue to evolve using our Apartment Counselors, neighbors, peers, and other resources to
provide live-in supports, emotional and behavioral counselling, relief care and whatever else
deemed necessary to build a unique individualized residential support model for each of its
members. With the opening of our newest subsidized housing apartment building on Wesley
Street in July 2013, MCRI was able to accomplish the goal of providing safe affordable housing
for eight more SILP members.
Our adult community residence on West Lane continues providing necessary transitional
services to people moving to AFLA or requiring relief or emergency placement situations. With
several members leaving this service unexpectedly and their vacancies unfilled things may have
been a bit quieter than normal for our professional staff working daily in the program. The
future of this important resource may be in jeopardy with the unfilled beds and the ongoing
systemic underfunding issue facing the program.
For me it has always been and continues to be an honor to be a part of this organization and
any success that I may feel is entirely due to the continued support of our volunteer Board of
Directors, and the success of our excellent administrative and supervisory team and of course
the efforts of our dedicated front line caregivers. Thank you.
Greg

Hi everyone. Things are very stable in the AFLA world. We are all looking forward to
summer vacation and enjoying the good weather. We would like to welcome Véronique
LeBlanc, Michelle Maillet, Louis LeBlanc and Katie Reick to our membership. We are very
happy to have you aboard. We are hoping to see a lot of you at our summer BBQ coming
up in July. Wishing everyone a very good summer. Until our next newsletter in the fall,
enjoy and be safe!
Interesting fact: The Statue of Liberty was not always green. It is made up of pure
copper panels which oxidized over time, turning it into the rich green color that we see
now. The statue was first assembled in Paris, France

Hi everyone. Everything at West Lane remains the same. Everyone is doing well and are looking forward
to the summer months. I would like to thank the team for doing an excellent job in giving such good care
and quality of life to our residents. Keep up the good work and have a wonderful summer.
Today I choose life. Every morning when I wake up I can choose joy, happiness, negativity, pain...To feel
the freedom that comes from being able to continue to make mistakes and choices— today I choose to
feel life, not to deny my humanity but embrace it.
Dominion
Dominion Street has had some challenging times for the last little while, but even
though times were difficult we’ve supported each other as well as the youth. We
are fortunate and appreciate the team for their dedication to each other and the
youth who we support. The youth are looking forward to summer vacation, to
plan some day trips as well as fun activities with the team.
We would like to welcome Melinda Mucci and Jose Serugendo to our team. Also a
big thanks to Arthur Hopper’s flexibility in temporarily filling a night position.
There will be exciting changes with the house dynamics in the next few week.
We would like to extend our thanks and appreciation to staff who work above
and beyond extra hours when needed to help the house run smoothly.

THE BEER EFFECT!!
La Recette
Summer is here!!! La Recette comes this time with a delicious, refreshing and easy
potato salad. Make this recipe and give your feedback/experience to the editor (Mavis
Rodriguez). Best feedback/experience will be published in our Residential Express
Newsletter next fall. Take your picture while cooking to be added to your story.
Ingredients
4 medium potatoes (about 1 1/3 pounds)
2/3 cup low-fat mayonnaise
1 stalk celery, thinly sliced (1/2 cup)
1/2 green sweet pepper, chopped (1/3 cup)
1/4 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 teaspoon cider vinegar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 hard-cooked egg, coarsely chopped
Directions
1. Wash potatoes and cut into 1-inch cubes, leaving skin on. In a covered saucepan, boil
potatoes in enough water to cover for 20 to 25 minutes or until just tender. Drain well.
2. In a large bowl, combine mayonnaise, celery, green pepper, onion, mustard, vinegar, salt,
and black pepper.
3. Add potatoes and egg to mayonnaise mixture. Toss lightly to mix. Cover and chill in the fridge
at least 6 hours (or up to 24).
Cooking Tips
Boiling Point: Skin-on is the way to cook spuds to retain nutrients and prevent mushiness.
One-Two Crunch: Sneak in extra nutrients, fiber, and texture with diced vegetables. But stay away from
produce with a high water content, such as tomatoes and cucumbers, or you run the risk of a soggy
salad.
Dressing Do: Don't wait for the spuds to cool before adding them to the mayo mixture. Warm potatoes
will absorb more of the tangy flavor.
