SEASON TO CELEBRATE
N O V E M B E R – D e c ember
2 013
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the
highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
– John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Virginia’s claim to the first Thanksgiving: On December 4, 1619,
Capt. John Woodleaf and 37 other English colonists landed at Berkeley
Hundred on the James River, a site known today as Berkeley Plantation.
Upon landing, the settlers knelt and thanked God for their safe passage
from England. The colony’s charter from that point on included a
requirement that “the day of our ships arrival at the place assigned
for plantacon (colonizing) in the land of Virginia shall be yearly and
perpetually kept holy as a day of thanksgiving to Almighty God.”
For years, Virginia’s claim of precedence for the Berkeley Thanksgiving
was a topic of mostly good-natured rivalry with Massachusetts, but in
the early 1960s the federal government, under Massachusetts native
John F. Kennedy, proclaimed Berkeley Plantation the site of the “first
official Thanksgiving in America.”
Today we invite you to celebrate with your friends and family a
traditional Virginia Thanksgiving at Salamander Resort & Spa. Whether
you join us for dinner, a post turkey gathering in the Gold Cup Wine
Bar and Billiard Room or come to stay in luxurious surroundings while
visiting family, we thank you for including us in your holiday weekend.
Shop in historic Middleburg, take in a winery tour, enjoy a horseback
ride through the beautiful Virginia countryside and reflect on the many
good things you have received over the past year.
