We are now into the final week of 2012 and what a year it has been. Of course it is beyond the scope of this editorial to really run through the highs and lows of the year going by, but from Obama being voted back to power, Sachin retiring from one day cricket, the original super hero Rajesh Khanna bidding his final adieu, to Delhi burning following the horrendous rape of a medical student, the year has been more than eventful. Of course not to forget the innumerable predictions that the world would end in December hanging over all our heads like a Damocles’ sword. In sports, the Olympics saw many of our athletes bringing glory even though the nation’s favourite sport, cricket, was not quite as cheering. But coming back to the news that’s making headlines everyday, the rape case has whipped mob frenzy unseen in recent times. Women across all ages and social strata have sent out a loud message that atrocities on women will not be tolerated and safety for women needs to be given its due importance. Unfortunately, even as they do so, we have news of another gang rape closer home in Cuddalore. Let’s hope the government wakes up to the reality and gravity of the situation and takes real measures. In cricket, the much awaited India Pakistan series has begun and even though the first match went Pakistan’s way, there’s no denying that it was a real thriller. Don’t know who your great grandfather was? No sweat. A US based company claims to have developed the most comprehensive and accurate tool to trace a person’s family tree by determining his ancestral origins going back 500 years and more. If you thought only the bride wanted a fairy tale wedding, think again. The modern man is now almost as twice as likely as his bride to want a lavish wedding according to a new UK research. In a reversal of roles, it is the groom who wants to break the bank for a grand event with all the trimmings while his fiancé wants a cheaper do. This one’s really interesting. The average British family has at least five arguments on Christmas day with the first row taking place at 10:13 a.m. according to a research that surveyed 2000 British households. The next one takes place at 12:42 p.m when children complain about receiving the wrong presents. 45% admitted that parents argue between 1 pm and 3 pm because the father had too much to drink and the mother is stressed about the food preparation. At 6:05 pm, the fight is for the remote control. This is followed by an outburst at 7:25pm by 7% of senior family members. 10:15 pm is when the final flare up happens. Interestingly, psychologist Corinne Sweet reasons, “On Christmas, family flare-ups are inevitable because people who rarely see each other are suddenly thrown together for the whole day.” Before I sign off, just a gentle reminder that it is time to revisit the New Year resolutions list. Remember it from last year? Let’s add one more to that list, which is to resolve to adhere to those resolutions. Jay Prakash. December 21 was to be the date of destiny, it was to be the day our world would come to an end. And while the world watched with bated breath, notwithstanding NASA’s reassurance that nothing would happen, December 21 came and went by, like any other normal day. As we bid goodbye to 2012, I propose to look at the entire year and what made 2012 a great year for sport. I will try and cover the most signiocant moments the year witnessed. Football What better way to kick things off than by starting with this fast and furious, yet beautiful game. This year saw the Euro 2012. The trophy was eventually won by Spain, thereby winning a rare treble. This set the world media talking if this is the greatest football team ever. The next World Cup, due in about a couple of years, should be able to complete the story. The various leagues around the world had their fair share of excitement as well. Let’s start with the most famous league in the world, the EPL (English Premier League). The trophy was decided on the last day of the season making it one of the most gripping seasons ever. 2 teams were in the fray to decide the trophy as the last day came. It was a duel between Manchester City and United and the underdogs (City) came out on top. Moving on from England to Spain, from EPL to La Liga. The league is about 2 teams only, at least that is how every season pans out. This was the year for Jose Mourinho and his boys as Real Madrid went on to clinch the 32nd title in their club history. Borussia Dortmund meanwhile had their day in the sun as they were crowned champions in Germany. F1 The F1 season also had its own share of spills and thrills. By winning back to back titles,SebastianVettel rose to claim the throne vacated by Schumacher. The season was intense and made for compelling viewing as Sebastian Vettel had to oght hard to claim the throne. Also the season that just went by was Schumacher’s last, thus bringing down the curtains on an illustrious career. We will surely miss Michael. Tennis Some say he is a thing of the past and others say Djoker is too good for him while some others said he is haunted by Nadal even in his dreams. But Federer proved to be Federer as he went onto clinch the Wimbledon this year proving that form is temporary and class is permanent. This year was one of the most unpredictable in recent history – 4 grand slams and 4 different winners proved that the men’s draw is as open as the sky on a bright sunny day. *randslaP Winner Australian open Novak Djkovic French Open Rafael Nadal Wimbledon Roger Federer US open Andy Murray While on the ladies front there is no point looking beyond one name and that is Serena Williams. With her winning trophies by the dozen (Wimbledon and the US Open) she has etched her name permanently in history books. *randslaP Winner Australian Open Victoria Azarenka French Open Maria Sharapova Wimbledon Serena Williams US open Serena Williams Tennis is not just an individual sport. The Davis Cup brings to the forefront the strongest tennis country at the moment. The Czechs won the cup making it the 1st victory after it became an independent country. The ladies have their own team event called the Fed Cup. The Czechs lifted the trophy as well, thus putting to rest talks about the best tennis country in the world. 2lyPpics 2012 was also the year of the Olympics. This is the grandest sporting event of them all. This is an event where boys become men and mortals become legends. The Olympics is a vast event and I will be covering the marquee events of the games. Usain Bolt proved again that he is the fastest man on the planet. By winning the 100 m he has now gone down in history books as the one of the sports greatest. CHENNAI's FIRST CORP O R AT E L E I S U R E N E W S PA P E R HAPPY NEW YEAR HAPPY NEW YEAR HAPPY NEW YEAR HAPPY NEW YEAR HAPPY NEW YEAR HHAPPY NEW YEAR It became a sweet double for the Jamaicans as Frazer Pryce won the women’s event which made Jamaica the “fastest” country in the world. The Jamaicans were not to be out done in the team event too. The men’s event was won by Jamaica, but the women’s event was dominated by the perennial champions, the Americans. Michael Phelps, the swimming sensation, won 4 gold and 2 silver, thereby, arguably becoming the greatest Olympian alive, at least medal tally wise (22 medals). He decided to call it a day on his career which ensured he went out on a high (Can we hear other swimmers sighing in relief"). Cricket And then we must come to the grand old daddy, cricket. Being an Indian, one really cannot live without breathing cricket. Enough has been said and written about Indian cricket through my previous editions so I intend to take a holistic view on the sport. 2012 saw the 4th edition of the 20-20 World Cup. This edition saw the old kings take centre stage on the grandest show cricket has. Yes the West Indians came, saw, danced, sang, partied and lifted the cup on the back of some Gayle heroics: Gangnam style. 2012 may not have spelt doom for the world but it did spell doom for cricket lovers and enthusiasts. The year saw the end of greats such as the wall of Indian Cricket (Dravid), the Australian Punter (Ponting) and a very very special man (Laxman). 5 Who said boxing is a man’s sport. Ask Mary Kom and she will probably give you a punching to prove otherwise. At the games boxing medals were always won by the men for India. But this time saw a sweet change with Mary Kom winning a Bronze as she joined the league of men. Sushil Kumar meanwhile is climbing the ladder with continuous improvement in more than one way. With a Bronze in 2008 and Silver in 2012, can gold be far behind in 2016? The Indian wrestling contingent is waiting with bated breath and so are we. Yogeshwar Duttalso had his fair share of wrestling glory as he won a Bronze in wrestling. Who will forget the swollen eye he overcame with steely determination to see the Indian pag go up at the Games. Vijay Kumar and Gagan Narang meanwhile brought 2 medals from the sporting range hitting the bull’s eye. While writing about Ponting’s retirement, I had hoped I would not be writing about the retirement of one of India’s greatest cricketers soon. But, sad to say, I am compelled to write about a little boy who earned the hearts of a million, a boy with a funny hairdo, a boy who singlehandedly inspired an entire generation to take up the sport, a boy who is a hero to millions or should I just address this person as “God.” Yes indeed,Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar has decided to call it a day on his glorious one-day career, ending an era and also this article. Farewell Genius, Fare well 2012. Our colonial leaders, England, rose to the top of the test rankings with some fantastic cricket around the world. The year gone by saw some fantastic cricket but with bats becoming broader and stadiums becoming smaller 6’s & 4’s will rain in the coming years. ,ndians in 1 2012 in many ways will be remembered as the year that saw India becoming a sporting nation. We had many athletes in various sports making their name and have their day in the sun. Saina Nehwal won the hearts of people in our country by becoming the 1st Indian women to win a Badminton medal at the grandest sporting event of them all. She won a Bronze.
