Dir. of Congregational Care/ The SEAGULL EDITOR Carla Whitlow Dir. of Operations Melissa Wagenseller Asst. Financial Administrator Christina Norvell THE SEAGULL Happy New Year! When the Methodist movement was just getting started during the 1700’s, John Wesley would travel the English countryside and conduct Covenant Renewal Services with the different Methodist Societies. In London these services would take place annually on New Year’s Day. Other churches started having the services on New Year’s Eve. These services encompassed what you might expect from a New Year’s Day or Eve service. They were meant to be a set aside time to look back on the past year and prepare for the new one. In spiritual terms that meant having time for personal evaluation, pardoning of sin, thankfulness for God’s sustaining graces, and renewing our commitment to following Christ and serving Him in this world. In Wesley’s day this service would often last three or more hours. I tried having a considerably shorter service one year on New Year’s Eve. The only two people who showed up were the two people who lived next door to the church and they told me the only reason they came was because they knew no one else would come and they didn’t want me to strike out. That was sweet; but I haven’t had a New Year’s Eve service since. Nevertheless, there is a part of this service that people have come to respect and cherish. It is known as the Wesley Covenant Prayer. I invite you to begin the year 2017 by setting aside just a few minutes for personal evaluation, to ask God for forgiveness for the sins of the past year, to thank Him for His sustaining grace, and then, when you’re ready, to renew your commitment to follow Christ anew in the coming year by praying this prayer: Dir. of Youth Ministries Nicole Roche Dir. of Children’s Ministries Joseph Hughes Asst. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. May you have a glorious and wonderful New Year! Pastor Doug Page 2 UMW NEWS THE SEAGULL Ruth Circle will meet Monday, January 9, at 10 am in the parlor. Stephen Ministry by Beth Perry Happy New Year! We in Stephen Ministry are excited that we will be commissioning five new Stephen Ministers in February. I will tell you more about them next month. I hope each of you had a very Merry Christmas! I have to tell you that I sometimes get tired of writing about gloom and doom to encourage you to ask for a Stephen Minister if you need one. It is difficult to ask for help. I get that. Pride stands in our way. We don’t like to admit that we can’t handle all the pressures in our lives. Sometimes we are paralyzed with indecision, afraid to do anything because things may get worse. However, most of the time, we can’t improve our situation until we take some kind of action. Often, simply talking things through with a neutral party is the spur you need to get moving. Stephen Ministers are neutral even though their care is loving. We are on your side but we don’t judge or fix things. We listen and help you achieve some spiritual balance through Christian caregiving. One of the mottoes of Stephen Ministry is “We are the care givers, God is the cure giver.” We help remind you that God is always working for good in our lives and though we may encounter difficulties in life, we can trust in God to help us get past them. Does it mean we can sit and wait for God to fix things? No! It means that a Stephen Minister can help you find the path God is making for you. If you feel lost in the woods and need help finding your path, please call on Stephen Ministry. Regardless of the problem, we can offer you a safe harbor to discuss it. Call Janis Norris at 509-9608 or Beth Perry at 231-2369. Did you know that WUMC has a committee that is actively working on Diversity in our church? What was pinpointed as a concern at last year’s Administrative Council retreat has become an active group discussing and searching for ways our congregation can better understand the issues that still exist between races in Wilmington and communities across North Carolina. We have had Bertha Todd come and talk to us about Wilmington’s struggles with race relations in the past 100 years, and we had a local filmmaker, Brian Grim, come and discuss his nationally acclaimed film “Racial Taboo”. In March 2017 we are planning a screening of the film along with other Wilmington congregations. And we also extend an invitation to you to join us at a combined UMC/AMEZ service January 14th at 3:00 PM to be held at Warner Temple AME. Our own Bishop Hope Morgan Ward will be the guest preacher. Our meetings take place the first Thursday of each month at noon in the fellowship hall, if you want to join us for our monthly meeting please contact Barbara Gowdy ([email protected]) We also found this UMC GCORR video very helpful in our discussion. http://www.gcorr.org/video/vital-conversations-on-racism-with-dr-robin-diangelo/ Page 3 THE SEAGULL Thank you... We’d like to thank Bill Traina and Pete Sherrick for being such a great help to WUMC. Bill and Pete came and picked up all the gifts that you donated for Methodist Home for Children and delivered them to the warehouse for distribution. Thank you so very much! STARS “Seniors Talking and Remembering the Seasons” will not meet in January. We look forward to seeing you at our next luncheon on Tuesday, February 7th. The Altar Guild would like to express its gratitude to The Plant Place and Bobbie & Bill Edwards and Dee Ivey for all their assistance during the Christmas season. The beautiful poinsettias were a wonderful addition to our Church decorations. In the recent Harbor District newsletter, “The United Methodist Council of Bishops has identified PARTNERING WITH SCHOOLS TO HELP END POVERTY as one of the main areas of missional focus for our denomination in the 2016-2020 quadrennium. Obviously this is very much in alignment with our conference’s C4C efforts, so we’ve got a great head start. Approximately 83% of the churches in our conference are involved in some type of C4C activity/partnership with a public school.” Thank you WUMC members for your continual support of C4C through our partnership with Snipes Academy. This month we are collecting new or gently used winter coats (must be solid color) and snacks (granola bars, crackers, etc. individually wrapped). It’s time to start thinking about Confirmation 2017! Confirmation is an opportunity for our youth to learn more about their faith and church membership. At the end of the process, they will be invited to profess their faith and become members of WUMC. If you are going into 7th grade (or older) then Confirmation is for you. Classes will begin March 12th and run through May 14th on Sundays from 4:30-6:00 p.m. There will be a weekend retreat March 3-5. They will not meet April 9th & 16th due to NHCS Spring Break. To sign up or for more information, email Christina at [email protected]. See page 13 for complete schedule. 2017 Flower Calendars If you wish to sign up for flowers on the Altar or in the Narthex in 2017, the calendars are in place. You may find these outside of Pastor Doug’s office. When you sign up, please do the following: 1. Please place your name on the date where you are requesting flowers so others know that Sunday has been taken. 2. Please also fill out one of the information forms in the envelope underneath the calendars so we may print the correct details in the bulletin. Each arrangement is $40. Checks should be made payable to WUMC and put “flowers” in the memo line. If you have not yet paid for your arrangements from 2016, please place your payment in the Altar Guild’s box in the front office. Thank you. Page 4 THE SEAGULL Thank You! The Second Annual Cookie Walk was a great success. A big thank you to all who participated in any way-to those who helped set up the Cookie Walk on Friday, to those who worked at the Cookie Walk on Saturday, to the dozens who baked cookies, to God’s Girlz for making treats to sell, and for all who attended and purchased cookies and treats. We couldn’t have succeeded without you! New Member Class If you are interested in making WUMC your church home, please join us on Saturday morning, January 21st for a new member class. The class will provide a history of our church, an overview of its ministries, and ways you can be a part. A nursery will be provided for children. Join us from 9:00-12:00 in the Fellowship Hall on January 21st. Please call the office at 256-4471 if you have any questions. There is a sign up sheet on the hallway bulletin board! WARM: Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry Rebuild Black River Stepping Up To Do Our Part WARM will partner with Harbor District United Methodist Church Disaster Response, local Baptist churches, United Way of the Cape Fear Area, and other local agencies to focus on rebuilding home along the Black River in Pender County. 110 homes have been identified that need our assistance. These projects will require more advanced skill, more volunteer recruiting/coordinating, and more funding than our traditional services (urgent repair and accessibility upgrades). In fact, the first 12 homes could cost a total of $300,000! Call us at 300-7563 to volunteer. To donate, go to http://warmnc.org/donate_now_.aspx. Don’t stop them! After many years, Ann Millard is retiring from this job, therefore I am in need of someone to schedule and remind the weekly volunteers when it is their turn to stuff the bags. Ann can definitely explain what she did to help make this vital program so successful. Please contact Mrs. Nicole for more information. I am working on Wiggler Worship volunteer schedule for 2017 so please let me know if you can volunteer your time and talent for an hour either at the 8:30 or 11:15 service. This is strictly a preschool nursery and all volunteers usually serve just 3 times a year. This breaks down to only 3 hours of service. Please prayerfully consider helping with this vital ministry. No Sunday School on January 1st! Happy New Year!!! Please join Ms. Nicole for 5:05 on Wednesday, January 11th, from 5:05-6:15 p.m. upstairs in the 4th/5th grade room.
