Introduction
One of the most important aspects of looking after your money is knowing
how to budget.
It means that you know how much money you’re getting and how much you’re spending.
If Beaver Scouts want to save up for something special like a new bike or just make the most of the money they
have day to day, it’s a good idea to budget. But we know it’s not easy, so that’s why we’ve put together this
resource to help Beaver Scouts become brilliant budgeters.
The Scout Association
working with NatWest
The Scout Association have teamed up with NatWest
to produce this resource for Beaver Scouts to help them
learn about how to budget and look after money.
It will help you deliver an impartial programme of
activities. There is also an activity pack which should
be provided to each Beaver as further support. The
activities in their packs relate to those outlined here, but
parts of them can also be done at home.
These resources should help Beavers to develop
confidence in themselves and their own ideas, explore
ways of managing their own money, and be great fun.
This pack will help Beavers learn more about:

things they need.

This activity will help Beavers Scouts to think about saving and how to budget so they
can afford the things they want.
If you wanted to save for something, how would you do
it? You’re about to find out.
What you will need:
• Colour pens or pencils
• Paper
• An Argos catalogue
How long: 30 minutes

How to do the activity
1. Ask the Beavers to draw one thing they would like to
save up for using the space in their activity pack (15
minutes).
2. Then ask them to look in the catalogue and see how
much it costs. Get them to write this down and to also
write down how much pocket money they get.
3. Work with them to see how much would they need to
save each week to afford their item? How long would it
take them? (15 minutes).

There are lots of things we can spend our money on, and sometimes it’s hard to tell
what the things are that we really need.
This activity will help Beavers to think about the
difference between the things they want and the things
they need. It will encourage them to appreciate the
value of money and see the sense in planning how to
spend it.
I like to play computer games. I
have to save the money, and then
think about which one I want. I
don’t want it to be rubbish when
I’ve saved for it.

What you will need:
• Pen and paper
• Sticky tape
How long: About 20 minutes
How to do the activity
1. Write down the word ‘want’ on one piece of paper and
‘need’ on another. Stick them on opposite walls of the
meeting place (5 minutes).
2. Read out the items below to the Beavers. The Beavers
run to one side of the room depending on whether
they feel they need or want an item. The Beavers
should only have a few seconds to make up their
Beavers/Natwest pack – 1st draft
minds (15 minutes).

Activity: Currency bingo
There are lots of different kinds of money around the world. People don’t just
use the pound.
This activity will give Beavers a taste of the different
currencies there are.
What you will need:
• Pens or pencils
• Scissors
• A bucket
We went to France once. The
money was different. I didn’t
understand.

How long: About 25 minutes in the meeting.
Some preparation needed beforehand.
How to do the activity
1. Cut out the currency tickets on the following pages and
put them in a bucket.
2. Split the Beavers into pairs/teams giving each a bingo
card (each pair/team needs a different card so you may
need to photocopy/print some out) (5 minutes).
3. Take the tickets out of the bucket, one at a time, and
call out what’s on them.

4. If a team has this currency they can cross it off on their
bingo card.
5. Winners are the ones who complete their card first and
shout BINGO! (20 minutes).
