Furlow Reunion visits LaCrosse in Schley
By Linda Adams
A Furlow family reunion was
held in Americus over the weekend and was attended by over 90
family members from Washington D.C., Texas, the Carolinas,
Miami, and Americus. Their reunion included a bus tour of the
cemeteries where their families
were interred and some of the
places where they lived.
Some members of
the Furlow family moved to LaCrosse from Americus between
the war and the end of the century. Six of those family members
are buried in the Baisden Cemetery on Highway 271 in Schley
County. The busses stopped to
visit the cemetery and then pro-
ceeded to tour the C. H. Burt
Store at LaCrosse.
Reggie Bryant, one of the organizers, visited Schley County
Library before the reunion
and was told to call Imogene
McLendon, who owns the land
that surrounds the cemetery
and the Burt Store property at
LaCrosse. She welcomed the
group and related some of the
history of the area. She said that
there were two stores in addition
to the C.H. Burt Store. One was
housed in a two-story building
and coffins were displayed on
the second floor. There was
a cotton gin that blew a loud
whistle at noon. The railroad
depot was active since trains

ran twice daily between Americus and Columbus and passed
through Ellaville and Buena
Vista. There was a blacksmith
shop and a planing mill. A peach
orchard grew where there is
now a mature pecan grove, and
there was a peach packing plant
that employed many people in
the season. There was a school
and a church. The school building is still standing and there are
plans to restore it.
“It is important for our younger family members to see these
places so that they can appreciate their history,” Bryant said.
“This, too, is history in the making.”
