Eng. 2 Grain farming is one of the most dynamic industries in the world. It is also one of the most vital and essential industries for mankind. Modern grain production plays a major role in the quality of life that most people now enjoy. Because grain production is an essential industry, for almost 100 years, government policies have significantly influenced grain production. Government policies very much controlled the production of grain during the two World Wars to maximize production. After the wars, the controls were relaxed but never eliminated. One of the unintended consequences of Government’s policies was to make grain farming either just marginally profitable or unprofitable for still the most important factor for the success of the farm enterprise, one of the factors involved for getting the best possible crop outcome regardless of what Mother Nature throws at the farmer is the capabilities of the farmer’s equipment. Our goal as a company is to develop and offer new products that increase the farmer’s ability to successfully cope with the variability in the weather and soil conditions that they can encounter. We are constantly pursuing new innovations apparent that the seeding depth was not appropriate. However, this sometimes resulted in emergence problems that resulted in crop losses. The QDA system makes setting the depth easier, less time consuming and will contribute to better crops in some years. Another example of Bourgault’s efforts to extend the capabilities of its equipment can be seen in the high flotation steering axle system found on the new 86 foot model 3320 PHD. With the independent opener drills, Making farming better includes designing equipment that allows farmers to be more efficient and productive but it also means helping make farming less risky, onerous and frustrating. In short, the goal is to make farming less problematic and more rewarding for our customers. a lot of the past 100 years. In many years, subsidies were required to keep the majority of farmers on the land. Government policies have also led the world to take cheap food for granted. However, when the demand for grain began to exceed the world’s ability to produce it, the world began to recognize the obvious; grain is essential to life as we know it so it cannot be taken for granted! Grain farming is a very challenging and demanding undertaking given the countless factors that come into play when producing a crop. As all farmers know, the production of virtually every crop involves considerable struggle and is never a given. Every farmer has experienced the bitter disappointments of crop failures in spite of their best efforts. Although management skill is that expand the capabilities of our equipment to make farming easier and more rewarding. Our designers are always striving to extend the limits of what the equipment can do. For example, we have recently developed a Quick Depth Adjustment (QDA) system for the 3320 Air Hoe Drill equipped with PHD™ openers. This system allows a farmer to change the seeding depth on a 3320 in a matter of a few minutes rather than taking the better part of an hour. Now a farmer can realistically afford to take the time to experiment to ensure that the optimum seeding depth has been selected. When the depth adjustment for the drill took most of an hour, farmers simply could not justify spending the time to try different seeding depths so they would carry on at the existing settings unless it became The Cutting Edge - Bourgault Industries Ltd. because the packing pressure can be hydraulically controlled, the item that will cause a drill to start to become stuck is the main frame castor wheels. Whenever a wheeled tractor encounters a wet area, tire slippage will usually increase. At some point, the castor wheels on the main frame can stop turning because they will be unable to roll over the churned up soil. Shortly after the front castor wheels start skidding, the entire unit usually becomes stuck. However, replacing the castor wheels with a steer-able front axle system equipped with high floatation 800/65R32 tires allows the main frame to roll over the churned up soil thereby allowing the unit to get through that wet spot without incident. Furthermore, the seed will continue to be deposited at the desired depth. Farmers can start seeding sooner in the spring or resume seeding sooner after a rain, seed more of their marginally wet areas and still do a job. They will also spend far less time getting themselves unstuck. If the drill does become stuck, it is also usually much easier to get the unit unstuck. These technological developments can make farming better and easier and allows the farmer to be more productive. Starting with the development of its first cultivator in 1970, Bourgault has developed a culture that fosters innovation “to make farming better”. As a result, Bourgault has been able to attract many top tier designers who share that passion. Making farming better includes designing equipment that allows farmers to be more efficient and productive but it also means helping make farming less risky, onerous and frustrating. In short, the goal is to make farming less problematic and more rewarding for our customers. Because our designers are closely connected with modern farms, they completely understand the struggles that farmers face in meeting the challenges of successfully producing a crop as farms become increasingly larger and the costs of producing a crop continue to increase. Going forward, it will become increasingly more challenging for farmers to grow enough grain to feed the world’s population and also meet the demand for the production of bio-fuel and industrial products. However, farmers have consistently demonstrated that if they are given the right incentives, they will find the way to produce more grain. This includes: 1) adopting improved plant genetics, 2) enhancing their fertility program, 3) increasing the use of herbicides, fungicides and pesticides, 4) adopting the best farming practices and 5) investing in more advanced and capable farm equipment. Our mission is to contribute to help leverage the farmers’ efforts, as best as we can, with the continued development of innovative products. As you review this publication, we believe that you will see a host of technological innovations that can help your farm become more efficient and productive while making your life as a farmer better and more rewarding. BIG WHEELS KEEP ON TURNING DEVIN LUNG THE B OURGAULT HI-FLOTATION DRILL R&D Team Project summarized by Devin Lung, Team Leader P.Eng. Anyone who’s seeded with a seed drill can testify that the front main frame casters offer a telltale sign of whether or not the ground is too soft to seed. When working in wet field conditions, the main frame casters can sink into the soft ground, especially if the ground has already been disturbed by a tractor operating with limited traction. Once the rear of the walking caster wheels fall into the rut that has been opened by the leading tires, it is usually game over. It is time to either unhook or call for backup---both situations being unwelcome delays. Over the years, considerable improvements have been made to minimize the impact that the casters have when operating in soft soil conditions. Some design amendments have included: lowering the air drill’s hitch pull point and increasing tire flotation with larger rubber. Each step provided great improvements, but as each successive drill became wider, the extra weight of the larger drills counteracted the increase in performance. Further advancements were required in order to provide reliable operation for larger drills and drills like the 3310/3320 PHDs that can now seed into wetter soils. A CLUE FROM OUR AIR SEEDER DESIGN During the 6700ST air seeder field trials, it was observed that the 6700ST pulled easier through soft soils than the 6550ST. Clearly, the 6700ST outweighed the 6550ST, and although the tire pressure was improved on the 6700ST, this improvement wasn’t so significant that it warranted such noticeable advancements in performance. This observation begged the question: What was easing the pull on the larger air seeder model in wet seeding conditions? The greatest observable difference between the 6550ST and the 6700ST was the diameter of the tires. Further field observation revealed and confirmed that the increased diameter was, in fact, providing the bulk of the improvement. When the smaller diameter tires sank into the soft soil, the result was a bulldozing effect. In comparison, the larger diameter tires seemed to draw the mud downward as the tire rotated. This motion effectively raised the tires out of the mud rather than burrowing them in deeper. This revelation paved the way for the extra large diameter rubber on the 7950 Air Seeder. COULD THIS WORK FOR OUR AIR HOE DRILLS? As it stood, the air drill running gear remained the “bottleneck” of seeding into soft and wet field conditions. We now had a good idea of how to solve this issue, but the solution wasn’t going to be easy. Hi-Flotation- HF 1 FA S T f a c t s Hi-Flotation---the additional articulation point dramatically improves the following-ability of the road train. Entering the field no longer has to be a clumsy endeavor. 2 The Hi-Flotation design consists of large diameter tires across the front of the drill. These large diameter tires dramatically reduce rolling resistance in soft field conditions. (Larger diameter tires were added to the front only as adding them to the rear would have a marginal payback due to the weight distribution front to back.) For further information on Hi-Flotation visit: www.bourgault.com that the increased diameter was, in fact, providing the bulk of the improvement. We knew that it simply was not possible to directly replace the existing casters with large diameter tires as the envelope required to rotate the casters was enormous. In response to this challenge, the tillage design team developed a steerable axle. By adding the steerable linkage, we were able to keep the large diameter tires near the frame which both maintained our excellent ground following capability and continued to allow the drill the ability to move forward and backward as necessary. This ability would have been lost with a limited motion caster. The addition of the steerable linkage on the front of our drills didn’t come without additional challenges. As seeding toolbars become wider and wider, there is a need to increase the length of the hitch to maintain side-toside stability. Without increasing the length of the hitch, the wide toolbars skew with relative ease when the same unbalanced forces are being applied near the outer wings. In our case, the new steerable linkage negatively moved the pivot point from the tractor drawbar to the front of the drill where the linkage pivots. The answer to this challenge was the development of an active, hydraulically assisted hitch steering system (patent pending). The active hydraulic force is at its greatest when the drill is traveling in a straight line, but decreases when the unit is turning or around obstacles. Field trials have confirmed that the hydraulically assisted hitch steering system is effective. Air seeder tanks, particularly those equipped with duals are getting wider and wider. Negotiating corners with a seeding system is becoming more of a challenge, but with the new steerable Hi- Flotation tillage, the additional articulation point dramatically improves the following-ability of the road train. Entering the field no longer has to be a clumsy endeavor. FOCUS ON THE FRONT Since the inception of the Hi-Flotation concept, a valid recurring question has been: Why are we placing so much emphasis on the drill’s front running gear, but haven’t done anything to increase flotation on the rear of the drills. To better explain this, I’ll use the “wheelbarrow” analogy. The front running gear of the drill is like the wheel of a wheelbarrow when it is being pushed. When a wheelbarrow is being pushed, the wheel tends to bulldoze through soft soil or over obstacles. In this same analogy, the rear running gear of the drill is like pulling the wheelbarrow through the same soft soil or debris, which requires much less effort. Applying this analogy, it’s easy to see that the rear tires are not subjected to the same challenges as the front running gear of the drill for flotation. The Hi-Flotation feature will include large diameter caster wheels on the front of the inner and outer wings but any payback for adding rubber on the rear of the drill would be marginal at best. A: The short answer is yes to both products; however, understanding the chemistry of how the products work is critical to determining if these products will fit your cropping program. Polymer Coated Urea–The polymer essentially restricts water movement into the urea prill which slows the rate of early season release of ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4+) into the surrounding soil. This reduces the concentration of both compounds early in the growing season when developing seedlings are most sensitive. Urease Inhibitor–The urease inhibitor product interferes with the activity of the urease enzymes in the soil to slow the conversion process of the ammonia-based nitrogen sources to mobile nitrate (NO3) in the soil. The product is blended with urea at your retail outlet. The horticultural industry developed these products to restrict early access to nitrate (NO3), thereby managing early vegetative growth and extending nitrogen availability to increase yield. Nitrogen released later in the growing season will contribute to yield and crop quality. Nitrogen losses would also be reduced by maintaining the nitrogen in the ammonium (NH4+) form longer; maintaining this Q: form (which is very stable in the soil) slows the conversion to nitrate (NO3). If most of the nitrogen is converted to nitrate early in the growing season, the plants will produce excessive biomass but may be low on N during seed set. There is also a greater risk of nutrient loss through leaching and denitrification [nitrous oxide (NO2) to the atmosphere]. In crops grown on row spacing of 12 inches or less, restricting early season access to nitrate can be achieved mechanically by placing the urea or anhydrous ammonia in doubly concentrated bands between every second seed row (mid row). Because the concentration of ammonium is doubled, the process of conversion to nitrate extends longer into the growing season which reduces the potential for leaching or excessive early season biomass production. The mid-row band nitrogen placement strategy provides very similar benefits as found with polymer coated urea or urease inhibitors. The decision as to the strategy to use on your farm is one of economics. You must compare the cost of 8 to 10 cents per pound of nitrogen applied for polymer coating or urease inhibitor every year to the amortized cost of equipment that will place the nitrogen in a mid row band per acre. My neighbor seeded his canola the same day as me, but he got his off before the wind. Mine was still too green in some spots and ended up a disaster. What steps can I take to improve/even out my maturity? A: This past season marked a year of challenge for many canola crops, but underscored the importance of plant emergence, vigor and maturity. Fields with the most uniform emergence, vigor and optimum fertility placement were better able to withstand the extremes of moisture, temperature and disease and yields generally matched accordingly. There are a number of proven steps which can be taken prior to seeding to foster ideal germination, including the consideration of previous crop rotations, residue The Cutting Edge - Bourgault Industries Ltd. management, fertility management, weed control and drainage. Two critical aspects that I wish to elaborate on are: 1/ nutrient placement, and 2/ the seeding process. NUTRIENT PL ACEMENT Generally speaking, N, P and S will be the primary nutrient requirements for canola. Where they are positioned relative to the canola seed plays a significant role in uniform germination and emergence. 17 Nitrogen Placement–The importance of N separation, especially with canola, has been well documented by independent research and was confirmed in a 3 year study conducted by the Bourgault Agronomy Sulphur in the form of 20-0-0-24 was applied at 80 lb of total product per Team. The understanding of the mobile nature of nitrogen and having lb of total product per acre in a seed place configuration. No additional the capability to provide separation from the seed will lower your risk and nitrogen, other than the inherent amount contained in the sulphur, was help ensure the most uniform emergence possible. Below is a chart that applied. provides a good guideline of the amount of separation required from the Yield increased as separation increased with the mobile nutrients of seed in normal operating conditions on a 10" spaced system. It also confirms the ability of acre in three separate placements–seed placed (SP), side banded (SB) and mid row banded (MRB). Phosphate Placement–As an immobile nutrient, phosphate has been Seedbed Integrity–The quality of the seeding job is critical. Studies have proven to be most effective when seed-placed or close to the seed to shown that canola emergence is superior when placed on a well-defined allow for early season access. However, P benefits can be reduced when seed bed. It is therefore important to choose an opener that does not safe seed place rates are exceeded, or when combined with N levels sacrifice the quality of the seedbed. Get out of the tractor often and check that exceed minimum separation distances. At high rates of P, it may be for problems such as soil fracturing, windrowing (stepping), or uneven seed beneficial to split off and otherwise position any rates in excess of what placement. can be safely placed with the seed. Opener-Packer Selection–It is important to match the opener style with the Also, when P is placed with nitrogen, the P can be trapped in the “hot packer wheel. A narrow ¾" knife typically is paired with a narrow wheel to band” of nitrogen. Roots will avoid the initial toxicity of the N band, thus focus packing over the narrow furrow. Likewise, a wider packer is needed missing critical early access to the P as well. for openers providing greater seed bed utilization. Sulphur Placement–Sulphur is also a mobile nutrient that can cause the Operating Speed–Openers that do a good job of preserving the seedbed risk of seed damage if applied at rates and/or placement strategies that also allow you to operate at higher speeds without sacrificing placement. exceed the tolerance of the crop. The extensive use of well-engineered cast components, convenient depth adjustment, and hydraulic engagement means more time for you in the field seeding and less time spent adjusting or maintaining. Key factors to consider are: The goal behind mid row banding is to apply all of the seed and fertilizer requirements in a single operation without the seeding operation itself incurring risk to the potential crop thereby maximizing yield potential. M R B III Seedbed Integrity – Never compromise seedbed quality for a one-pass seeding operation. Seeding systems that disturb the seedbed and leave a rough field finish typically struggle to place seed uniformly at the depth set by the operator. The quality of the seedbed is paramount to ensuring the best start for the crop. Root Dominant Environment – Key to establishing a strong and healthy crop stand is to foster a root dominant environment in the soil. The more that is understood and achieved to encourage an extensive root system, the better the chances are for the crop to take advantage of the nutrients available. One of the challenges of air seeder design is that the metering system is tasked with accurately dispensing a wide variety of products such as seed, fertilizers, and inoculants-– add seed treatments to the mix and the combinations are seemingly endless! Seed treatments present an especially unique challenge in that they are constantly evolving in response to the ever-present issues of diseases and pests. Pursuing a metering system design that handles any and all M E T E R I N G S Y S T E M ---T H E P D M P R O THE PERFECT STORM – One of Bourgault’s great advancements in air seeder technology was the development of the patented PDM+ metering system in the late 1990’s. Year after year, the PDM+ has proven itself to accurately meter a wide range of products at both high and low rates. The single-point sump ensures that product is consistently and safely drawn through the precisely matched steel orifice even at low tank levels. In 2003, in response to customers identifying certain product combinations sticking to the original steel augers flighting and core, we introduced the UHMW (Ultra-High Molecular Weight) polyethylene auger. UHMW is an amazing material – resistant to corrosive chemicals, immune to swelling in humid conditions, highly resistant to abrasive wear and as a whole stuff just doesn’t stick to it! 3 PRO PD POSITIVE DISPL ACEMENT product combinations as they evolve is a challenge our design team faces… The Cutting Edge - Bourgault Industries Ltd. T H E P E R F E C T LY W R O N G P R O D U C T C O M B I N AT I O N . The potential for further improvement really hit home a few springs ago when another engineer and I paid a visit to a farmer to review the performance of his new 6700ST. Upon arrival, he walked us around the unit, pointed out a few minor things and then made a beeline for his pick-up. He dropped the tailgate and showed us his ‘consumables’ from that spring’s seeding season–steel metering augers with treated seed built up on the core and UHMW with damaged flighting. Obviously and rightfully frustrated, he went on to explain that he knew he had the right people to fix the problem, or, at a minimum he knew who to come after! As expected, the UHMW auger had performed admirably and eliminated product sticking and affecting the calibrated rate. This particular customer was experiencing a more unique challenge where now the seed treatment was sticking to the housing and orifice and eventually damaging the UHMW auger flighting. Mid-season he switched to the steel auger which kept the housing and orifice clean, but was progressively under-applying product due to build-up on its core and flighting. V E R S AT I L I T Y The Bourgault Spring Trip Assembly is designed for a wide operational range. Mount narrow knives for a smooth, high quality seedbed, or sweeps for cultivation and weed kill. You can choose from a wide variety of bolt-on or quick-change seed knives, spoon openers, vertical openers and spread tip openers. HANDLE MAXIMUM RESIDUE Bourgault’s designers have always made trash clearance a top priority. The 4 row trip layout is designed to achieve unmatched trash clearance around the wheels. The distance between shanks is a minimum of 36", the distance between adjacent bars is 32", and the frame to ground clearance is 31-½" with 1-¼" shanks. This is all part of the formula for superior straw clearance.
