December 2016
Merry Christmas from all of us at
Bishop Carroll Catholic High School!
Page 8:
Calendar
Rejoice! We hope this Advent season has given you and your family a time to reflect on
2016. Bishop Carroll is wrapping up their finals and the students are itching for Christmas
break. We pray for all of our families as we embrace this new year of 2017. Also during this time
of reflection, we ask to you consider a gift to Bishop Carroll. As you know, our stewardship in the
Catholic Diocese allows us to educate our children in Catholic Schools without the burden of tuition, but we do need help. We ask that you first and foremost tithe to your parish and then also
consider a gift to the BC Fund. The BC Fund is for ordinary means of the schools (i.e. teachers’
salaries, operation bills, grounds upkeep and much more.) This is necessary to make our school
function the way it does every day.
Please consider a gift to our school and if you would like to donate online, visit our website at www.bcchs.org and click on Giving, or you can send your gift to BCCHS, 8101 W. Central,
Wichita, KS 67212. Any gift is appreciated and greatly needed.
Thank you to all those that have already given to our school!
Please continue to support and pray for our school community as we move forward in our
mission to form Disciples of Christ here at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School.

In a New York State of Mind
by BC Choir Director Melissa Seiler
Forty members of the Bishop Carroll Choir,
along with their Director, Melissa Seiler, and
parent chaperones, spent a fun-filled 5 days
in New York City over Thanksgiving Break.
This trip came at the personal invitation
of composer John Leavitt, a Wichita native
who also directed music at Newman
University during his career, as he
celebrated his 60th birthday and his 30th
year as a composer/arranger.
Our Bishop Carroll singers took the
Carnegie Hall stage with more than 220
other musicians from around the country,
and a 35 piece orchestra for the 90-minute
concert that was held Friday, November 26th.
Mrs. Seiler said she was even more pleased to actually sing with her
choir students on stage.
“It’s amazing to know that you’re singing in the most prestigious
performance hall in America,” said Seiler, “and to get to sing with my
current Bishop Carroll students as well as former students that also
attended the event through Newman University was incredible.”
While in New York, the group participated in two, four-hour
rehearsal sessions and a recital performance at St. John’s Episcopal
Cathedral in preparation for the big night. The rehearsing didn’t just
happen in New York. The BC choir began learning music for this
concert in August and continued all the way through our departure
in November.
The icing on the cake was when the group received a standing
ovation from the 1,600+ audience members in attendance.
The trip wasn’t all work, though. The choir students enjoyed an
opportunity to see the Radio City Rockettes at Radio City Music
Hall, family-style dinner at Hard Rock Café followed by seeing the
Broadway Musical “Aladdin,” and getting up early to attend the
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Some even enjoyed a little early
Black Friday shopping on Thursday night, went on a carriage ride,
ate some amazing food, and enjoyed the sights and sounds of the
city that never sleeps!

The semester is winding down! Marching season and Christmas concerts are done! Already into pep band and
will be starting contest music in January. All-State Band auditions will happen in Salina January 7. We have 3
students continuing on from District Band: Chloe Allmond, Anna Capps, and Mary Rongish.
boys
Basketball
The season is off to a fast start with 6 games before the Christmas Break. New Coach Mike Domnick is
settling in and is feeling comfortable with his new position and is working hard to bring about individual
and team success. The boys are off to a 1-4 start. The young men of Bishop Carroll have been awesome
to work with and continue to work hard to improve. The coaches and athletes are excited to see what the
rest of the season has in store for us.
girls
Basketball
Girls basketball is 5-1 in the City League. We lost to Wichita South on Friday by 5 points. They will play Kapaun
Bowling
Bowling tryouts were successfully completed the first week of December. We have 4 returning starters on both
the first game back after Christmas break
the men’s and women’s teams. We are highly encouraged with the results from our tryouts, and anticipating
a successful season for both teams. Practices begin January 2nd and our first event is the following Saturday,
January 7th
Wrestling
Wrestling began the season at the Valley Center Dual Tournament in which the team went 3-2 in route to a 5th
place finish. On 12/8 wrestling began the city league season with a home dual vs Wichita West and were able
to win 42-31. After the West dual the team went to the Douglass Tournament in which they finished in 5th place
and had five placers (Ryan Murphy 1st, Brady Bockover 2nd, Kyler McGlachlin 4th, Gabe Arredondo 4th, and
Sean Hallacy 3rd). This week they were at Wichita South for a City League dual. South was one of the preseason
favorites for the city league title this year, but BC found a way to win an exciting dual 33-30. Finally, they finished
up the year at the Bishop Carroll tournament. The tournament had16 teams on 6 mats in 2 gyms. Bishop Carroll
finished in 9th place and 8 wrestlers placed (Conor Murphy 2nd, Ryan Murphy 2nd, Brady Bockover 3rd, Sean
Hallacy 4th, Aaron Arredondo 6th, Karson Dugan 7th, Colton Ensz 8th, Kyler McGlachlin 8th). The team will be
back in action 1/5/17 at Wichita Heights for a City League dual and at the two-day Derby Tournament on 1/6/17
and 1/7/17.
Choir
The BC Choir took a middle school choir tour to 7 of our BC feeder schools. The Madrigals also joined the
Newman University Choirs in performance the first weekend in December. On December 8th the Madrigals
headed to Botanica (on their day off) and sang for the Via Christi Volunteer Luncheon. Our BC choir concert was
held at St. Catherine Of Siena Catholic Church on the 12th to a crowd of approximately 650! It was a beautiful
evening on music and worship.

School Prayer
“Dear Lord,
Thank you for the gift of Bishop Carroll
Catholic High School. We pray that unity,
charity, and faithfulness may always be
present in this school. Help us to preach
equality of others as well as their dignity and
worth through both our actions and words
each day. Draw us together in discipleship,
thanksgiving, and purpose as we strive to
enrich the culture by spreading Your light and
love. May we always follow in Your footsteps
and let no one leave us without growing in
virtue and happiness. Amen.” virte and happiness. Amen
----> An Executive Religious STUCO Officer
wrote the school prayer over the summer
and the rest of the executive board
collaborated on the final draft of the prayer.
Senior, Julia Howey created and designed
the prayer card. STUCO distributed them to
the students and it is prayed every Monday
morning over the announcements.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pray for Us
On December 15th we had our All School Mass that was
dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, who’s feast day was
December 12th. The Mass was celebrated in Spanish, by Bishop
Carroll alum Fr. Devin Burns ‘07, and the music was peformed
by students in our Spanish classes. We were also blessed to
have the Guadalupe Dancers give us a taste of their traditional
ceremonial dance after Mass.
A Guadalupe dancer performs
after the All School Mass.
Thank you to all who made this
Mass possible, including all of our
Spanish teachers and their classes
who worked hard to make all the
details of this Mass special.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
BC Chaplain, Fr. Sam Brand ‘06 concelebrates Mass with Fr. Devin
