The Beginning (Gen nesis 1) 1 In thee beginning God G created the heavens and d the earth. 2 Now N the earthh was formlesss and empty, darkness waas over the surface of the ddeep, and the Spirit S of God was hovering g over the waaters. 3 And G od said, “Let there be lighht,” and there w was light. 4 God G 5 saw thatt the light waas good, and he h separated th he light from the darkness . God calledd the light “daay,” and the ddarkness he caalled “night.”” And there was w evening, and a there was morning—th he first day. 6 A And God saidd, “Let there bbe a vault bettween the watters 7 to separrate water from m water.” So God made the t vault and separated thee water underr the vault from m the water aabove it. And it was so. 8 God called the vault “sky y.” And theree was evening g, and there w was morning— —the second dday. 9 And Good said, “Let the t water unnder the sky be b gathered to o one place, and a let dry gro ound appear.”” And it was sso. 10 God callled the dry grround “land,”” and the gathhered waters he h called “seaas.” And God saw that it was w good. 11 Thhen God saidd, “Let the lannd produce vegetation: seed dbearing plants and trees on the lan nd that bear frruit with seed d in it, accordiing to their vaarious kinds.”” And it was sso. 12 The land d produceed vegetation:: plants bearin ng seed accorrding to their kinds and tre es bearing fruuit with seed in it accordinng to their kinds. And Good saw that it was good. 13 And A there waas evening, an nd there was m morning—thee third day. 144 And God saiid, “Let there be lights inn the vault of the sky to sep parate the day y from the nig ght, and let thhem serve as ssigns to mark sacred times, and days and years, 155 and let them m be lights in the t vault of th he sky to givee light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 G God made two great lights— —the greater light to goverrn the day and d the lesser lig ght to govern n the night. Hee also made thhe stars. 17 Good set them inn the vault of the sky to ggive light on the t earth, 18 to o govern the day d and the niight, and to seeparate light ffrom darknesss. And God saaw that it wass 199 good. And there was evening, and there was morning—th he fourth day. 20 And God ssaid, “Let the water teem w with living creaturees, and let bird ds fly above the t earth acro oss the vault of o the sky.” 21 So God creatted the great ccreatures of thhe sea and ev very living thhing with whiich the water teems and that moves about in it, accorrding to their kinds, and evvery winged bbird according g to its kind. And God saaw that it was good. 22 God blessed them m and said, “B Be fruitful andd increase in nnumber and ffill the water in i the seas, annd let the birds increase on the earth.” 23 And there waas evening, annd there was morning—thhe fifth day. 244 And God saiid, “Let thee land produce living creattures accordin ng to their kin nds: the livesttock, the creattures that movve along the gground, and th he wild aniimals, each acccording to itts kind.” And it was so. 25 God G made thee wild animalls according too their kinds, the livestock k accordinng to their kin nds, and all th he creatures th hat move alon ng the groundd according too their kinds. And God saw w that it was good. g 26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind m in ourr image, in ou ur likeness, soo that they maay rule over thhe fish in the sea and the birds b in the skky, over the liivestock and all the wild an nimals,[a] and d over all the ccreatures thatt move along the ground.” 27 So God creeated mankind in his own image, i in the image of God d he created them; t male annd female he created them m. 28 God blesssed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill fi the earth an nd subdue it. Rule over thee fish in the ssea and the birrds in the sky y and over eveery living creeature that mo oves on the grround.” 29 Theen God said, ““I give you evvery seed-beaaring plant onn the face of th he 300 whole eearth and everry tree that haas fruit with seeed in it. They will be youurs for food. And to all thhe beasts of thhe earth and all a the birdds in the sky and a all the creeatures that move m along thee ground—evverything that has the breatth of life in it— —I give every y green pllant for food.” And it was so. 31 God saw w all that he had h made, andd it was very good. And thhere was evenning, and there was moorning—the siixth day.
