PART 3 - Analyzing the Declaration of Independence (35 points)
Summer Assignment with Rubric
*****ANSWER ON THIS PAGE******
You will use the Declaration of Independence found in your text book to complete this portion of the assignment.
The Declaration of Independence was created during a tumultuous time with strained relations between Great Britain and
the American Colonies after the Road to Revolution set the two on a collision course. Key issues surrounding the time dealt
the treatment of the colonies under British rule, taxation, and their lack of representation in Parliament. In this part of the
assignment, students will be given the opportunity to analyze the Declaration of Independence from its origins.
Task:
• Answer each of the sections ON THIS OUTLINE in complete sentences.
Preamble:
• What reason(s) did the Founding Fathers give for their decision to write out a declaration?
•
Name two European Enlightenment thinkers whose ideas they pulled from along with their most famous works.
Statement of beliefs:
• What specific beliefs did the Founding Fathers declare they held with respect to the relationship between the
leadership and those who are governed and how had this been violated by the crown?
List of complaints:
• List and discuss THREE of the complaints mentioned against the King.
LASTING IMPACT:
• The Revolutionary War was fought and won from 1775-1783. The Declaration of Independence was not a system of
government but a statement of grievances against the King. Answer the following in one sentence each.
• When were the Articles of Confederation ratified, and how long did they govern America?
•
When was the Constitution ratified and how long has it governed America?
