JOHN CABOT HOUSE, BRISTOL John Cabot House is a specialised service for people with a brain injury, designed with an emphasis on continued rehabilitation. We believe that people can still develop skills, confidence and participation even several years after injury. It is designed as a “step up or step down” service for individuals who may require more intensive support following a deterioration in their mental health or behaviours. It may also be of interest to those who are ready to move from hospital into the community but need a period of intense structure and support to improve their confidence and independence skills. Our rehabilitation programmes are designed around the specific needs of each individual. For some people the stay will be relatively short, lasting only a few months; others can be assured that whilst continued progress is important, longer stays are possible. John Cabot House is in the residential area of Brislington, 2.3 miles from Bristol Temple Meads railway station and close to regular local bus routes. It’s close to all the usual amenities and services you’d expect in a large thriving city. The house is a newly refurbished Grade II listed building with the generous proportions expected of a building of that period, but an internal specification which reflects modern day style and levels of comfort. It offers six bedrooms all with en suite shower room and W.C. There are three spacious and wellfurnished communal living areas, an additional training kitchen and a conservatory looking out over private mature walled gardens. The service also benefits from the addition of two self-contained ground floor apartments. These apartments offer the opportunity for individuals to have greater independence, with the reassurance of the 24 hour support in the adjacent service. These apartments also offer flexibility for those with moderate to high support needs who wish to live alone or find it difficult to live within a group setting. We are committed to only using very experienced neuro-rehabilitation specialists to support the needs of people with acquired brain injury and neurological rehabilitation needs. We work with Neuro-Psychologists, Neuro-Occupational Therapists, Neuro-Physiotherapists and Speech and Language Therapists. We use Goal Attainment Scaling to support each person to focus on daily functional goals and we monitor broader attainments on general outcome measures such as St Andrew’s Swansea Neurobehavioural Outcome Scale (SASNOS).
