Introducing ITS!
Faculty, staff, and students who are considering traveling and studying
abroad now have a handy place to begin their pre-travel research. The
MVCC Libraries has created the International Travel and Study LibGuide,
which can be accessed at the MVCC Libraries homepage by clicking on
LibGuides and then on Education, or by going to the following address:
http:/mvcc.libguides.com/its.
In the ITS LibGuide researchers can find lists of books available in the
Libraries on international etiquette, study abroad, and learning a language,
as well as travel guides and reference books. Sources for maps, both print
and online, are included. Those needing to learn a foreign language will
find a list of the Libraries’ audio and video materials. Need to find articles
in travel magazines? Links to magazine article databases are also there.
Finally, potential travelers can search through lots of web sites on travel
etiquette, specific countries and languages, and study abroad opportunities.
Educators and administrators of MVCC’s study abroad program will
also find lists of books and web sites of interest and use to them. There is something
for everyone at the Libraries, and the key to exploring the resources lies in the ITS
LibGuide. Check it out today! If you have suggestions for additional content to the
LibGuide, contact Krista Hartman at extension 5339.
Happy traveling!

MVCC views study abroad agreement in Ireland
MVCC enjoyed some Irish luck
on Thursday, September 23, when
Marianne Doyle, International Student
Relations Manager of National College
of Ireland, visited the Utica Campus for
one whirlwind day. She was in town to
discuss opportunities for MVCC students
to attend NCI, either as part of a 2+2
articulation agreement or, eventually, for
one semester before returning to Central
New York to complete their degrees.
The National College of Ireland
is a public business and information
technology university in Dublin. The new
campus is located in Dublin’s Docklands,
in the International Financial Service
Center area of the city. NCI has 5,000
students and a strong entrepreneurial
spirit. Because of strict accreditation of
business programs in Ireland, the two
schools agreed prior to her coming to
MVCC not to discuss the possibility of
NCI’s students attending MVCC.
Doyle’s visit was prior to her
participation in a high-level educational
trade mission to Boston, Chicago and St
Louis.
In addition to meeting President
VanWagoner, Doyle met with Vice
President Maryrose Eannace, Executive
Director of the MVCC Foundation
Frank DuRoss, Jim Maio, Director of
Career, Transfer and Job Placement
Services, professor George Goerner, Dean
Marianne Buttenschon, Matt Snyder, Dan
Porcelli and Annette Broski.
She also had lunch with Great American
Irish Festival representative Kate Barefoot

along with Dawson McDermott.
Doyle formerly worked in the Fulbright
Program office in Dublin, and thus was
the first person Sandra Engel, Ph.D.,
encountered when seeking a partner in the
United Kingdom.

Spring 2011 - MVCC Study Abroad to London & Paris
Art and literature come alive through the iconic landmarks
and pageantries of London and Paris. Kings and queens once
shaped the course of world history from these two vibrant
capitals. Today, both cities boast of unparalleled art, music and
culture of a modern metropolis and remain enduring centers of
influence. Uncover treasures such as St. Paul’s Cathedral,
Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye, Eiffel Tower,
Notre Dame, Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Elysees, the Louvre
and the National Gallery on the MVCC comprehensive tour of
London and Paris.
This spring semester course will pair an introduction of art,
music, theatre, poetry and literature of these great countries
with a 10 day trip to provide a contextual background for these
creative oeuvres. Students will create, research and discuss
work based on topics provided by the instructors, Professors
Jed Kimball and David Nackley.

Spring 2011 - MVCC Study Abroad to Greece
Faculty members Carolyn West Pace and Robert Christman
will be teaching a 3-credit Humanities course in Greek art,
culture and philosophy in spring 2011. The course is followed
by a 13-day trip to Greece run by EF College Study Tours.
The estimated departure date is May 22. This is an opportunity
to explore the roots of Western civilization, the birthplace of
2
Aristotle and Plato, the Temples of Apollo, Poseidon, Zeus and
Athena Nike, and relax on a cruise of the famed Greek islands
including Santorini and Mykonos and the Turkish ports of
Rhodes and Kusadasi.

East meets West on Trip to Sister Community College
President VanWagoner, Professor Alison Doughtie and
Sandra Engel, Director of International Education completed
a very successful visit to MVCC’s partner college in Vietnam, Kien Giang Community College, in June.
The visit was the subject of President VanWagoner’s two
summer blogs.
Some experiences did not make it into the blogs or to
Alison’s or Sandy’s Facebook pages, but feel free to ask any
of them about this visit, including about eating soup with
chopsticks; listening to KGCC students sing Vietnamese opera on the beach; taking photos of puppets that walk on water
and of bamboo scaffolding, and about sampling a variety of
foods, including durian, a fruit which, one of them characterized as something along the lines of “It starts out tasting like
pumpkin but ends with an aftertaste of tobacco.”
President VanWagoner also invited Ms. Thanh of the
KGCC English Department to serve as Visiting professor
at MVCC starting at the end of Spring Break in 2011 and
ending with graduation. Watch for more information on her
arrival and the likely karaoke-and-spring-rolls-and-hot-dogsreception!
Hysell to KGCC
Professor Bill Hysell of the Center for Language and
Learning Design was in residence at Kien Giang Community College during the last two weeks of October. He taught
the concept behind English as a Second Language (ESL)
and critical thinking with faculty. Since he was doing some
teaching online from KGCC, he also discussed online learning.
In addition, if the electricity and the rolling blackouts allow, he will be LIVE! From Vietnam! On October 26 at 9
a.m. in both Utica (IT225) and Rome (Plumley Auditorium)
as part of the Cultural Series.

Reading as Travel
MVCC PROFESSOR HONORED - On October 29, Associate Professor
David Katz was recognized as an international exemplar in professional
development as one of the inaugural recipients of the Exemplar Award
from the North American Council for Staff, Program, and Organizational
Development (NCSPOD). While attending the 33rd Annual Conference
of NCSPOD in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, Katz and Executive
Director of Organizational Development John Bullis co-presented “Zero to
Sixty: Building a Professional Development Culture” to educators from four
continents. This image is a view of the Olympic Torch Plaza in Vancouver.
The International Initiatives Committee, in conjunction
with the MVCC Libraries, held its first book discussion at
Summer Institute in May. Unbowed: A Memoir by Wangari
Maathai of Kenya was our first selection.
If you’d like to learn more about Wangari Maathai, see the
following “Libguide” created by Krista Hartman: http://www.
mvcc.libguides.com/wangari
Things Fall Apart, a novel by Nigerian author Chinua
Achebe, was the selection for the Fall Institute book discussion. See http://www.mvcc.libguides.com/chinua for more
information.
These books are available at both campus libraries. The
International Initiatives Committee hopes to hold more book
discussions in the future. Do you have a book you’d like to
recommend? Please join the discussion! Contact Anne Ichihana for more information.
