ABOUT CPH:DOX
3
Festival Profile
CPH:DOX is one of the world’s biggest documentary film festivals, which each year fills Copenhagen’s cinemas with a selection of more than 200
films from around the world. The films are divided
into five international competitions, an audience
award and a number of thematic series, which
focus on current political and cultural issues. The
festival was founded in 2003 by Tine Fischer, who
is still its director. CPH:DOX is committed to presenting the latest and most interesting aspects
of the documentary scene, and thus has a programme that includes both films by major internationally acclaimed directors and works by new
or unknown talents. Supported by film professionals as well as the national press, CPH:DOX grew
from 14,000 admissions in its first year to a record-breaking total of 91,400 admissions in 2015.
CPH:DOX continues to develop and expand, presenting a program that ranges from the works of
major international directors to new talent, from
large-scale theatrical releases to film/video works
in the field between cinema and visual art. The
program goes beyond traditional boundaries between disciplines and media, offering perspectives on creative crossovers between cinema,
television and media art.
New perspectives on creativity and interdisciplinary thinking
CPH:DOX aims to support the development of the
documentary genre and the independent, innovative cinema. CPH:DOX aims to present all the best
in non-fiction, art cinema and experimental film.
Challenging the traditional boundaries between
genre and media, CPH:DOX creates new perspec-
tives on creativity and thinking across film, media,
art and music. All of this involves different kins of
exhibitions, performances, music and audio projects, visual arts and the latest conceptual forms
within the film medium. It is this type of innovative
festival format that has made CPH:DOX one of the
world’s largest public events in the documentary
field.
CPH:DOX as an industry event
CPH:DOX has distinguished itself as an industry
event. The festival is also a central meeting place
and an important showcase for Danish documenta - ries - both nationally and internationally. With
CPH:FORUM and the festival’s highly acclaimed
seminar and master class programme, CPH:DOX
ranks among the most important new events on
the international festival scene. CPH:DOX also
produces its own documentary films at CPH:LAB,
where 10 pairs of directors create innovative and
groundbreaking low-budget films within a year.
The best festival in and for the world
CPH:DOX wants to be the best film festival in and
for the world. We insist on freeing the transformative potential of art and documentary films, that
is the potential to have a direct impact on the
social context. But CPH:DOX doesn’t just show
documentary films – we anchor them in social
context through debates, artist talks, events and
masterclasses. In the hope of creating real social
transformation, CPH:DOX establishes a space for
reflection, dialogue and opinion across the population, and with that making sure that the films and
the problems they pose stay with the viewers long
after they leave the cinema.

Highlights from
the festival
Dive into CPH:DOX’s programme for 2017!
An unmissable stop at this year’s festival is Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Along with our main sponsor, Normann Copenhagen, CPH:DOX will for 11
days open the doors to a unique festival venue
with three cinemas (including a designer sofa cinema and a virtual reality cinema), an international
exhibition curated by Toke Lykkeberg, interactive
exhibitions, a Blue Room dedicated to debates
and discussions, the five-day CPH:CONFERENCE
presented with Documentary Campus, as well
as a myriad of different social events. Entrance
to Kunsthal Charlottenborg, the exhibition ‘Welcome Too Late’, the VR-cinema and the various
interactive exhibitions and selected film screenings will be free during the festival.
A new talk format and SCIENCE initiative
CPH:MEETINGS is a new discussion platform inviting writers, visual artists, filmmakers, musicians and
satirists to give their viewpoints on some of the
greatest current debates and ask: where does art
go when the world is burning? CPH:SCIENCE is a
major new initiative, launched with support from
the Lundbeck Foundation to strengthen relations
between documentary and science. You will find
more information about the two programmes
later on in the press kit.
A new politically engaged children’s
programme – from a child perspective
2017 is also the year when CPH:DOX for the first
time presents films for a very young audience.
The programme targets school classes on weekdays and families on weekends. The selected
documentaries touch on diverse subjects such as
the refugee crisis, divorce and life at sea. In the
adult film programme, you will also find a handful of powerful films not for children, but from
children’s perspectives. Experience the touching
‘Obscure’ about PTSD-affected refugee children
or Margreth Olin’s ‘Childhood’, where Norwegian
children play in a free kindergarten in the forest,
as well as the Danish film ‘Waiting for the Sun’,
which depicts the live of Chinese children, whose
parents are in prison.
Themes in focus: Populism, acceleration
& curated by Anohni
This year, the programme also counts three specially curated film programmes. POWER TO THE
PEOPLE is a special programme that examines the
rapid growth of populist movements in Europe
and the US. Films in the section include the documentary-thriller ’Keep Quiet’, which touches on
antisemitism, and ‘Boiling Point’, which follows
social tensions in Finland.
PROGRAMME 2017
5
Parties and films on location
The programme THE FUTURE IS NOT WHAT IT
USED TO BE asks the question: Can documentary film relate to the future? Finally, CPH:DOX and
Aarhus 2017 present a programme curated by the
artist and musician Anohni entitled DISRUPT THEIR
LIVES, for which the artist has carefully handpicked 11 films.
Radio & music – live and on the big
screen
CPH:DOX’s music programme features 19 concerts, 20 music films and many audio focused
events. You can listen to Tindersticks and Avey
Tare (Animal Collective) in the designer sofa cinema, see performances by Lindstrøm, Shiny Darkly,
Awesome Tapes from Africa and see films about
Major Lazer, Joe Cocker, Iggy Pop and Sleaford
Mods. The audience is also invited to attend a cassette exchange market, an improvised concert on
a boat or to experience a live score for ‘Homo Sapiens’, the latest film by Nikolaus Geyrhalter. In addition, this year’s radio programme includes a new
audio piece of Copenhagen sounds by celebrated
sound engineer Peter Albrechtsen and sound artist Jakob Kierkegaard, a live architecture podcast
on location and plenty of events by internationally
acclaimed podcast masters Third Ear in the Copenhagen Planetarium.
Parties on location and special events are CPH:DOX’s trademark and this year is not an exception.
The film ‘Sour Grapes’ will be screened in a wine
cellar, ‘Burning Out’, a film about stressful hospital work, will be shown at Rigshospitalet and the
urban gardening documentary ‘Wild Plants’ will
be followed by a talk and tasting at BRUS. As for
the parties, we will celebrate teenage-hood with
Girls Are Awesome, host a disco evening at Bremen,
an opening party at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, a final
party with Vice and the yearly Opening Gala at DR
Koncerhuset.
Over 100 screenings across the county
This year’s programme is obviously a true documentary wonderland for the people of Copenhagen, but
also for many different cities in Denmark. The festival
will this year host more than 100 screenings throughout Zealand and Jutland with DOX:ON:TOUR.

Concerts –
AUDIO:VISUALS
At CPH:DOX, mainly three art forms music, visual arts and film - go hand
in hand, and the festival’s music programme includes all of them in different
combinations. This year’s AUDIO:VISUALS programme counts 19 concerts and
a handful of mini-performances in which
bands, artists and filmmakers have worked together to create a unique musical
and visual experience for the audience.
Psychedelic live show and Sunday melancholy
CPH:DOX’s concert programme kicks off with a
neo-psychedelic live-show at Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s designer sofa cinema with siblings Avey
Tare and Abbey Portner, who will give a stateof-the-arts audiovisual performance. Another
one of the many highlights from this year’s music
programme is the Sunday concert of the British
melancholics Tindersticks, which will also take
place in the sofa cinema at Kunsthal Charlottenborg.
Plenty of danceable concerts to choose from
Party lovers should not miss out the disco night
at Bremen Teater featuring Lindstrøm. It will certainly also be festive when the almost forgotten
cassette tape will be celebrated with a screening, an exchange market and mixes from Africa at
Absalon. If you’re looking for a more spacey and
visually mind blowing experience, the Canadi-
an DJ and producer Jacques Greene will together with Machinedrum deliver an electronic experience that will immerse the audience
in a sea of light and sound at their performance
in Vega.
Danish artists on the programme
The sound architect Ash Zidore will debute his
new material under the name AN GELLA during a
unique live scoring perfromance to the dystopian film ‘Homo Sapiens’ by the Austrian director
Nikolaus Geyrhalter. Another atmospheric evening not to miss is when Danish band IRAH and
the American Itasca will wrap the audience in a
soft velvety blanket with their voices and melodies. A very special audiovisual cocktail will take
place when graphic novels and live instruments
mix: the cartoonist Halfdan Pisket will read from
his work ‘Dansker’ accompanied by a music performance by Lars Greve and Why Be at Absalon.
Expect a darker and rougher atmosphere during
the punk night at Pumpehuset, featuring the
Danish hardcore band Halshug after the screening of Danish director Sami Saif’s film ‘The Allins’
about the deceased punk hero GG Allin at Grand
Teater.
Contact the press department if you would like
to get on the guest list for a concert.

Come and meet the ideas of today in conversation between March 23 and March 26
at CPH:MEETINGS. The EU, Syrian war and
the politics of art get the focus in a series of
sharp debates featuring Bernard-Henri Lévy,
Suzanne Brøgger, Matt Johnson and Rune

The heart of documentary cinema lies in its
hope to transform the reality it captures, a reality that today faces an unstable Europe, populist
politics in the USA, and a raging war in Syria. As
an art form, it provides a unique platform for
politicians and theoreticians today, as Tine
Fischer stated in Berlingske,“we need to hear
artists talk about what it is to be a human today, and we need more creative and wild hearts
to think out new solutions”.

A REGIONAL FESTIVAL
15
DOX:ON:TOUR
More than 35 municipalities will be waiving
the CPH:DOX flag when one of the world’s
largest documentary film festivals spreads
its wings across the country this March. For
the last two years, CPH:DOX has taken over
cultural organisations around Zealand with
their project DOX:ON:TOUR, featuring new
eye-opening documentary films and presentations, debates and events.
In the project’s first year CPH:DOX has screened
documentaries in cooperation with Kultur
Metropol in the Capital Region, and in 2015 the
project expanded to cover the region of Zealand. Just like a good documentary film, the
festival broadens its horizons and takes a trip
across Kattegat to come to Northern Jutland for
the first time with support from Region Nordjylland og Kulturregionen Vadehavet. More than
35 municipalities will take part in the project,
which means more than 100 screenings across
the country – a record number!
Smoky noir, political scandals, cassette tapes
and Cold War espionage With DOX:ON:TOUR the festival aims to focus
on current themes and generate debate and
discussion among the audience in close cooperation with the local screening locations and
cultural organisations. In connection with the
films, there will be presentations, debates and
events with figures from within and outside the
municipality. This way, the municipalities play an
important part in the festival, creating events
and activities across the different regions. This
year, the festival will visit cinemas, newly opened
theatres, student houses, aquaria, colleges and
cultural centres. The cultural institutions of the
municipalities have been involved in the selection of the films and preparation of the events,
which lead to a brand and diverse film programme.
The films will take the audience to many different places, including a debate on how we
welcome asylum seekers and what the cities
of Fjerritslev and Klim have to do with Cold War
espionage. You can also follow the whaling community from the Faroe Islands, relax in a smoky
60s jazzclub noir atmosphere, learn more about
the truth the government and media are hiding
from us, get acquainted with the work of a film
score composer, discover the lives of juvenile
offenders in Norway, get nostalgic about cassette tapes and much, much more.
The participating communes include: Albertslund, Ballerup, Brønderslev, Esbjerg, Fanø,
Frederikshavn, Frederikssund, Furesø, Gladsaxe,
Greve, Gribskov, Gulborgsund, Halsnæs, Helsingør, Herlev, Hjørring, Holbæk, Ishøj, Jammerbugt, Kalundborg, Køge, Lolland, Morsø, Næstved,
Odsherred, Rødovre, Roskilde, Slagelse, Sorø,

Propellor
CPH:DOX, European Film Market, International Film Festival Rotterdam and Cinemathon
have joined forces and launched the Propellor Film Tech Hub, a one-of-a-kind innovation
platform for the development of new business
models for production, distribution and experience of films.
The Propellor Film Tech Hub transfers established
innovation strategies from the start-up world and
focuses on the cross section between film and
technology as a breeding ground for new business models. It aims to become the missing link
between the film industry and the latest technological trends and new forms of social interactions.
The Propellor transfers established innovation
strategies from the start-up world and focuses on
the cross section between film and technology as
a breeding ground for new business models.
The four founders believe that the film industry is
at a critical point right now, lacking efficient strategies and methods to adapt to current challenges,
of which changing viewing habits, overproduction
of films and outdated business models are just a
few. “The industry needs a whole new dynamic,
but for this to happen you need to get some initial
movement. And this movement is called Propellor”, says Bero Beyer, Festival Director at IFFR.
The goal is to build a business-oriented ecosystem
where professionals from both inside and outside
the film industry can collaborate and innovate.
Tine Fischer, director of CPH:DOX, elaborates: “Propellor is the first film incubator that deals with
business models and distribution. The aim is to
challenge the way the film industry works today,
to better accommodate new audiences and new
experiences.”
“There are many opportunities in the film industry to develop content but there is not a
single program dedicated to the development
of new business models for production, distribution and experience of films”, says Erwin M.
Schmidt, Managing Director of Berlin based Cinemathon.
“We want to move towards a place where the film
