September - Tucson Area Intergroup

Just For Today
Unity. Service. Recovery..
Our Three
Legacies
September
9
Step Nine:
(Recovery)
Made direct amends to
such people wherever
possible, except when to
do so would injure them
or others.
Tradition Nine:
(Unity)
AA, as such, ought
never be organized; but
we may create service
boards or committees
directly responsible to
those they serve.
Concept Nine:
(Service)
Good service leadership
at all levels is
indispensable for our
future functioning and
safety. Primary world
service leadership, once
exercised by the
founders, must
necessarily be assumed
by the trustees.
“Sometimes too much
to drink is barely
enough”
-Mark Twain

Easy Does It or Take It Easy?
"IT'S a cinch!" said the big redheaded fellow after three months. At four months
they carted him off to the alcoholic ward.
"It's a cinch!" the little woman said. She'd been dry seven months, cocky for
about three. They found her all but dead in her bedroom--a binge, and an
overdose of sleeping pills.
"It's a cinch!" Don't kid yourself, brother!
We have in mind three recent 'slipees', two men and a woman, whose falls from
grace have one point in common--a too casual approach to sobriety. Lulled by the
comfortable atmosphere of A.A. they got the idea that alcoholism wasn't so tough
after all, merely a matter of going through a few motions. Alas! They didn't know
it was loaded!
TODAY, sadder but wiser, they realize they were "taken in" by self illusion, by
suddenly finding themselves among so many smiling, confident, calm-eyed exdrunks; by offhand references to "80,000 of us"; by speaker after speaker saying,
"I've had no trouble. . ."
These three were victims, literally, of A.A.'s success. If so many could do it with
such apparent ease,--well, it must be a cinch! Then, to top it off, there was that
slogan "Easy Does It"--good old "Easy Does It!"
For a while it was easy--or seemed to be. After sincerely taking the First Step,
then a running broad jump to the Twelfth Step, these three managed 4, 7, and 11
months of being dry. Dry--period! The intervening ten steps? Mañana! Didn't that
last speaker say, "Easy Does It!"?
THE moral inventory was sidetracked. They took a whirl at Steps 8 and 9--making
amends. In retrospect, however, they see that even here they mistook pride for
humility. The "amends" consisted mostly of paying up old bar bills while smirking,
"what a good boy am I." Last stand of the Old Big Shot! As to turning their wills
over to a Higher Power--double Mañana! They weren't ready for that God stuff
yet!
The result was that when a few adverse circumstances dovetailed with a tempting
opportunity to drink--bang! There was no real substance to their brand of A.A.; no
habit thought of sobriety carefully built up to replace the take-a-drink reflexes of
many years. Their error was a human one and maybe part of the blame lies with
you and me. A.A.'s growth is so rapid these days, the groups are often so large
that the old personal touch is sometimes missing. So if a man or woman isn't
drinking and shows no visible signs of tension, they might easily miss some of the
basic training we all got in the less affluent days and in smaller, more intimate
groups.
At any rate, these three were confused and there may be many others innocently
discounting the power of John Barleycorn. The A.A. Program is simple--but not
easy! There's a nice distinction. Building the Great Wall of China was simple-merely a case of putting one stone on top another. But it wasn't easy! Fortunately
no great harm was done and three people have learned the hard way that "Easy
Does It" does not mean "Take it easy!" As a memento of their slips let us
paraphrase two lines from that epic poem, "Why, it's a cinch",! he said. And
smiling, the boy fell dead!

SPANISH LIASON: No Report
AREA LIASON: Ted M. There is money available to fund workshops and provide scholarships to Assemblies. District
11 insurance to meet at Central Office is increasing in cost from $375/yr to $700/yr from the current insurer, due to
riders being added for other groups, workshops, etc. The treasurer will contact other possible insurers, but advised that
the very small size of the policy doesn’t make it attractive. Clay R. spoke about the upcoming Bridge The Gap
conference in September. Held a sponsorship workshop with 36 attendees. Several GSRs requested assistance for the
August Assembly; requests approved. Experience, Strength, and Hope group is looking for groups to sponsor an entire
month of speakers. Bride the Gap workshop- The GSO treatment and special needs coordinator will be there. Sept 9-11,
Tucson Hilton East. 201 were at the August Assembly. Contributions and literature orders are up significantly at GSO for
the first 6 months of the year. GSO is looking for young peopel's stories for an updated pamphlet. The Arizona State
