TOUCHER Volume 7 Issue 2 OHOPE BOWLING CLUB NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2015 From the President Greetings bowlers, Well, I am impressed with the turnouts we are getting to Tournaments and roll-ups. Don’t expect the numbers we had 8 or 9 years ago but we are going pretty well, membership remaining in the triple figures this year, and good representation at clubs in the Bay. We now have 4 keen student members. Please don’t over coach them at roll-ups as we have a training day under way and I am expected to coach them the Bowls NZ way. Welcome back all those who have been jaunting around overseas and now back to reality. Always a risk mentioning names, but, thank you Colleen Nichols and Margaret O’Regan for jumping straight back in and organizing the championships. As you can tell we have more trophies and shields than days available for play, some now obsolete. Where possible they will find a new home or be returned. To date the Fugle Plate and McCloud Finlayson shield have met this criteria. Want to keep up to date…..join our other 67 friends to view events, cancellations, photos of club activities and other mischief etc. at……... www.facebook.com/bowlsohope or our advertised web site. Bowls magazine link : www.insidebowlsmag.com What happened to all those jars we brought to the club…..A big thank you to all those who did…..They were given to Linda Anderson, a landscape gardener who, in her spare time, makes hundreds of pickles, jams etc, takes out her expenses, and sells them at different markets and donates the proceeds to charity. She has given a donation to the club for the jars, so keep them coming, let Mary W. know and Heather Dancy will get them to Linda. Also…. bigger jars, Jill Payne makes her special pickle and donates the proceeds to the club. Thank you Jill…..you are a legend. Coaching Tips Here are some points which may assist you with your training: Training Time—should be regular and have a specific goal On the Green—generally an hour session on the green is one of the best ways to improve Goals—set specific goals and targets to achieve improvement. Use the forehand for two bowls the backhand for the other two bowls. Train yourself to feel comfortable using either forehand or backhand Suggestions—practice may include some of the following: Delivery—Foot placement—Follow through with arm Delivering the jack (long / short). Grouping. Spilt Jack. Drawing to the ditch. Draw to long / short jack. Run Shots. Yard on. Jack in ditch. Draw one, run / drive one. Vary the mat position—short medium and long mat Take your mat up the green (to achieve a short jack length) and deliver the jack to ensure it does not go in the ditch. Wind Sessions. (it is important to train in all weather conditions, particularly the various wind directions) One Liners …..When fish are in schools, they sometimes take debate …..A thief who stole a calendar got twelve months …..When the smog lifts in Los Angeles U.C.L.A. …..A dentist and a manicurist married. They fought tooth and nail. …..Police were summoned to a daycare centre where a three year old was resisting a rest. …..When she saw her first strands of grey hair she thought she’d dye. …..A boiled egg is hard to beat. …..To write with a broken pencil is pointless.
