Lent and the Cross

Fasting and Abstinence
Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and
Good Friday by all those who have celebrated
their 18th birthday and have not yet celebrated
their 60th birthday. Abstinence from meat is to
be observed on all Fridays of Lent by all who
have celebrated their 14th birthday.
Stations of the Cross
What does “entering Lent” mean?
It means we enter a season of special
commitment in the spiritual battle to oppose
the evil present in the world, in each one of
us, and around us.
We will have Stations of the Cross in the
church:
Wednesday (Spanish) at 6:45pm
Fridays
(English) at 7:00pm
It means looking evil in the face and being
ready to fight its effect and especially its
causes, even its primary cause which is Satan.
During the Season of Lent, we will have Mass in
the Church every week: Monday at 7:00pm
Tuesdays 7:00pm
Thursdays 7:00pm
It means not off-loading the problem of evil
on to others, on to society, or on to God but
rather recognizing one’s own responsibility
and assuming it with awareness. In this regard
Jesus’ invitation to each one of us Christians
to take up our “cross” and follow him with
humility and trust (see Mt 16:24) is
particularly pressing. Although the “cross”
may be heavy it is not synonymous with
misfortune, with disgrace, to be avoided on all
accounts; rather it is an opportunity to follow
Jesus and thereby to acquire strength in the
fight against sin and evil. Thus, entering Lent
means renewing the personal and community
decision to face evil together with Christ.
The way of the cross is in fact the only way
that leads to the way of the cross is in fact the
only way that leads to the victory of love over
hatred, of sharing over selfishness, of peace
over violence. Seen in this light, Lent is truly
an opportunity for a strong ascetic and
spiritual commitment based on Christ’s grace.
Lenten Masses
Lenten Confessions
Beginning with the Season of Lent confessions
will be heard on:
Thursday from 6:00 – 6:30pm
Saturdays from 3:00 – 3:30pm.
Knights of Columbus - Fish Fry
The KC will be hosting an “All you
can Eat” Fish Fry Dinner every
Friday during Lent starting March 3rd
from 6:00-8:00pm in the Parish Hall.
The cost (includes tea and dessert) will
be $10 adults and $5 children (12 and
under). See you there!
Blessing for Expectant Mothers
This weekend we will have our monthly
blessing for expectant mothers of our parish
after all the Masses.

are no longer able to provide a

the
Catholic
patients/residents
for
the
Churches use in order to visit and administer
the Sacraments of Holy Communion or
Anointing of the Sick. Therefore, I need your
assistance when you have a family member
who is hospitalized or in a nursing home.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT/PRIMER DOMINGO DE CUARESMA
Pero la Iglesia recomienda ayunar en otros días de
nuestra libre elección. Los días ordinarios
de Cuaresma son muy propios para esta práctica.
OBSERVACIONES SOBRE LA CUARESMA
El tiempo liturgico de la Cuaresma se inició con el
Miercoles de Ceniza 1 de Marzo y se termina el Sabado
Santo, 15 de Abril, 2017. El Miercoles de Ceniza 1 de
marzo y el Viernes Santo (14 de Abril) son dias de
AYUNO y ABSTINENCIA.
TODOS LOS VIERNES DE CUARESMA SON
DIAS DE ABSTINENCIA.
Las leyes del ayuno y la abstinencia son leyes
de la Iglesia que nos obligan a limitar la calidad
y/o la cantidad de los alimentos que tomamos en
ciertos días.
El AYUNO limita la cantidad de los
alimentos.
LA ABSTINENCIA prohíbe comer carne.
¿A quiénes les obliga el ayuno y la abstinencia?
1) La Ley del Ayuno: Todos los que han
cumplido los 18 años de edad hasta los 59,
inclusive, están obligados a la ley del ayuno.
En los días de ayuno se permite
solamente una (1) comida completa. Se
pueden tomar otras dos comidas, más ligeras,
con el fin de mantener las fuerzas, según
las necesidades de cada individuo.
Se prohíbe COMER ENTRE COMIDAS,
pero se permite tomar líquidos, incluso leche y
jugos.
La presente legislación de la Iglesia Católica
requiere solamente dos días de ayuno:
El Miércoles de Ceniza
El Viernes Santo
2) La Ley de Abstinencia: Todos los que han
cumplido 14 años de edad están obligados a
observar la ley de la abstinencia.
LA ABSTINENCIA PROHIBE COMER CARNE.
La abstinencia completa obligue el Miércoles
de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. TODOS LOS
VIERNES DE CUARESMA SON DIAS DE
ABSTINENCIA.
NOTA PASTORAL: Los enfermos (esto incluye a
las mujeres embarazadas) no están obligados
a ayunar. Si usted tiene dudas sobre otras razones,
favor de consultar a su confesor o el Padre Orosco,
Párroco de nuestra Parroquia. (972-563-3643).
El ayuno significa un dominio sobre nosotros
mismos; significa ser exigentes en las relaciones
con nosotros mismos; estar prontos a renunciar a
las cosas, y no solo a los manjares, sino también a
goces y placeres diversos. (San Juan Pablo II.

Ayunen los ojos de toda mirada
curiosa…Ayunen los oídos, no atendiendo a las palabras vanas y a cuanto no sean necesario
para la salud del alma…Ayunen la lengua de la difamación y la murmuración, de las palabras
vanas, inútiles…ayune la mano de estar ociosa y de todas las obras que no sean mandadas. Pero
ayune mucho más el alma misma de los vicios y
pecados, y de imponer la propia voluntad y juicio.
Pues, sin este ayuno, todos los demás son
reprobados por Dios.
