FROM THE PRINCIPAL
We need to ‘go out’... to the ‘outskirts’ where there is suffering, bloodshed … blindness that longs
for sight, and prisoners in thrall to many evil masters. It is not in soul-searching or constant
introspection that we encounter the Lord ... but, we, in faith, go out and give ourselves and the
Gospel to others, giving what little ointment we have to those who have nothing, nothing at all ...
like shepherds living with the smell of the sheep, shepherds in the midst of their flock, fishers of
men. Pope Francis
Our Lenten journey continues and as much as we are encouraged to find time and
space to reflect quietly on our lives and our relationship with God, Francis calls from
the margins of human existence and demands that we carry our connection with God
into the lives of those in desperate need. As the grim detail of the plight of the people
of Vanuatu continues to unfold we must urgently move from contemplation to generous
action. We pray for the resolve to actually make a difference.
Our Commendation Ceremony welcomed back to the College large numbers of past
students who achieved extraordinarily well across all courses and training programs and
who contributed with enthusiasm to the life of our community and beyond. Our current
students were well presented and engaged indicating their appreciation of and respect
for the standards and values we demonstrate and proclaim. To be present for this celebration is to be filled with a great sense of our tradition, place and pride in belonging.
The Creative Arts Link continues to amaze us as its construction moves closer to
completion by the end of April.
The Focus Day experiences for our Year 11s have built spirit, relationship and named the
challenges of transition and the benefits of truly belonging to a community of welcome,
respect and affirmation. They have made a palpable difference to our students and
embedded the value of continuing to embrace others with unconditional positive regard.

Interim Reports-Clarification and Explanation of Ratings
By now you would have received your son’s or daughter’s Interim Report. Teachers and Tutors have worked hard to give
an early indication of students’ progress and we thank them for their efforts.
The purpose of the Interim Report is to give an account of students’ preliminary progress. It describes how students have
begun to engage in their learning. The descriptors reflect this purpose with a good, satisfactory or non-satisfactory given.
A GOOD descriptor indicates your son or daughter has begun the subject well and is completing set tasks to a pleasing
standard. It also indicates that the student is actively supporting and engaged with the GYC community as reflected in
attendance, punctuality, wearing of uniform and general cooperation.
A SATISFACTORY descriptor indicates your son or daughter is making acceptable progress and is completing set
tasks. It also indicates that the student is supporting and engaged with the GYC community as reflected in attendance,
punctuality, wearing of uniform and general cooperation.
A NEEDS ATTENTION descriptor is cause for concern and is indicative of areas which may require the student to
reflect, re-focus or account for changes necessary. Your son or daughter will need to consider this rating and attend to it
accordingly. There may be need for improvement, a requirement to apply him or herself more or the student may require
extra learning support.
A fourth category, A STAR, was given if the student had not been in class for an adequate amount of time (e.g. change
of subject) for assessment to be made.
Please take the time to peruse the report with your son or daughter, encouraging him or her to continue in the student’s
efforts where there are good or satisfactory results or support them to attend to the areas that require improvement or
attention. Teachers, Tutors and Heads of House continue to be available, so please don’t hesitate to make contact if you
or your son or daughter requires further clarification or support.

SPECIAL PROVISIONS TQA EXAMINATIONS
The Tasmanian Qualifications Authority (TQA) has a process whereby students with special circumstances may be eligible for
certain provisions to support them in their external exams.
These may relate to humanitarian entrance status, significant health impairment, psychological impairment, physical disability and special learning needs. The provisions may include such allowances as extra time, separate supervision, use of a
scribe/reader, borderline consideration dependent on the needs of the student’s circumstances.
All applications must be made through the College and must be supported by full documentation as required by the
TQA. Some students will already have been identified through our Targeted Programs and the College will be in contact with
you.
Application forms must be submitted to the College no later than Monday 1 June 2015. The TQA will not accept
any submissions for Special Provisions after the end of Term 2. For further information please visit the TQA site www.tqa.tas.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS is a multimedia, interdisciplinary student-created performance project for the
ANZAC centenary which will be performed at Dominic
College in The Oratory Space on 23, 24 and 25 April.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS is a unique educational project: taking the Glenorchy
War memorial as the starting point and utilising the techniques of Verbatim Theatre as well as community theatre. Students, using the names on the memorial,
are looking for details about the people behind the names – their stories, their
families, what their lives were like before leaving Tasmania... In short, painting a
picture of the human side of people who lived in our community, and so providing
connections, understanding and empathy between the up and coming generation
and one from 100 years ago who were not much older
than these students when events overtook them.
Perhaps you or your relatives, neighbours or friends
may know someone connected to the people named on
the memorial and may have photos, letters or stories
that could be valuable to the Dominic students in devising and performing the production?
If so, please contact [email protected] or
the College on 6274 6000.
