Romania’s Cavalry
Romania started the war with the Soviet Union with
six Cavalry Brigades, based on 12 Rosiori and 6 Cãlãrasi
Regiments, while the other 7 Cãlãrasi Regiments were used
for the Reconnaissance units of larger formations. Due to
their elite nature they were some of the first units to undergo
mechanisation. During the course of the war the Romanian
Cavalry underwent substantial organisational change, first
motorising some units with trucks and motorcycles and then
the expansion of the brigades into divisions in 1942.
In 1942 each Cavalry Division had three cavalry regiments, two were horse mounted and one was motorised.
The Romanian cavalry were skilled mounted infantrymen,
whether operating from horseback or from motor transport
and fulfilled the roll of elite mobile infantry rather than traditional sabre waving cavalry.
Like most European nations to be involved in the wars of
the late 19th Century, the Romanians had learnt the lessons
of modern combat and retrained their cavalry as mounted
infantry before the First World War.

repulsed all Soviet attacks and was awarded 28 German ’Iron
Crosses’. It defended the position until 2 January and was
the last large unit to hold defensive lines on the Chir River.
Heavily reduced in strength and missing most of it mounts
it returned to Romania with just under 5000 men. It was
disbanded in March 1943 and its troops merged with the 1st
Cavalry Division.

Peasant Army
Defend the Homeland
Romania’s huge army was drawn from the rural peasant class,
officered by the aristocratic upper class, and disciplined by
NCO’s using 18th century style corporal punishment. Men
were regularly beaten for minor breaches in regulation and
discipline. The separation of men, NCO’s, and officers even
went as far as meals that were supplied in three qualities,
with officers, naturally, getting the best. The officers were
also responsible for the training of their own units. This led
to a great variation in the quality of troops’ combat preparedness. The distant relationship between the officers and their
largely illiterate men combined with the harsh conditions of
army life, and sometimes poor training, led to mixed levels
of performance and morale in the field.
Though the Romanian infantryman may have mixed treatment from his officers and NCOs, once in the thick of the
fighting he would often fight tenaciously when confronted
by the enemy. They were not interested in invading Russia
or conquering the world, but to simply fight stubbornly to
defend what they already had.
To reflect the variable quality of the men and officers’ relationship and performance, Romanian platoons are rated
as Regular or Elite. After deployment, but before the first
turn, roll a die for each Romanian platoon and independent
Warrior teams. Consult the Peasant Army table to determine
their Skill and Motivation ratings. Platoons held in Reserves
do not roll until they arrive.

ROMANIAN SPECIAL RULES
When Romanian platoons test their Motivation to
Counterattack in assaults, you may re-roll the die and apply
the re-rolled result to all Romanian platoons that failed on
the original roll.
French Doctrine
The Romanian troops are trained in the French doctrine of
trench warfare. Their operational plan is to make a short
deliberate advance under cover of massed artillery fire, then
fortify their position to hold it while the artillery comes up
to repeat the process. While the advance is slow, it is sure and
will eventually result in the defeat of the enemy.
Once entrenched, Romanian infantry set up crossfire positions for every weapon allowing them to take any attack in
enfilade.
Romanian Infantry and Gun teams attempting to Dig In
succeed on a roll of 3+.
When conducting Defensive Fire, Infantry and Gun teams
that are Dug In or in Entrenchments can shoot over any
Man-packed or Light Gun teams that are also Dug In or in
Entrenchments.
Central Fire Control
Like the US Army, the Romanians were great followers of
French doctrine during the 1920’s and 1930’s and their artillery methods reflect this.
Romanian Company Command teams cannot act as
spotting teams for Artillery Bombardments.
When a Romanian artillery battery that has a Staff team
fires an Artillery Bombardment, any other artillery batteries with Staff teams may join it before rolling to Range In
and fire as a single combined Artillery Battery.

In March 1943 a tank battalion, equipped with 50 old
German T-38 tanks (CKD LT VZ 38 or Panzer 38 (t) tanks),
was sent to the front to reinforce the Cavalry Corps and the
Mountain Corps in the Kuban region east of Crimea.
It had three companies (51 , 52 and 53 ) each 15 tanks
strong. Five tanks were kept in reserve for replacements as
these old tanks had seen a lot of service and were not always
reliable. After the retreat from the Taman bridgehead, the
battalion was used in the fighting in Crimea in late 1943. It
returned to Romania in early in 1944, with only ten tanks
still operational.

Anti-tank gun Platoon
There were never enough of the powerful 7.5cm PaK40 antitank gun, so the infantry divisions had to make do with the
7.5cm PaK97/38, an old French gun mounted on a PaK38
chassis or captured Russian 7.62cm guns rechambered for
German ammunition.

The grenadiers of the German infantry are seasoned campaigners having tasted victory in Poland, France, the Balkans,
and now Byelorussia and the Ukraine. They have performed
their duties to the Fatherland with the utmost of efficiency
and are ready to continue their march to the East.
Though well-manned and full capable, the shear enormity of
their task at hand means their value must not be squandered
foolishly.

Towed artillery provides a good balance between cost and
effectiveness. Because of its mobility, motorised artillery
was often repositioned to support Romanian troops during
critical attacks and to hold off Soviet breakthroughs.
