Crime and Punishment – Medieval or Modern?!
DUE DATE___________________________________________
Instructions: Read the following account of the modern judicial
system and take notes.
The American Judicial System
When someone is arrested for a serious crime, the suspected
criminal is placed in a holding cell. However, the suspect has
certain rights. For example the suspect has a right to a lawyer and
to be fed while detained. The suspect also has a right to be brought
before a judge to be “arraigned” and hear the charges against
him/her. Moreover, suspects have the right to “bail”. The suspects
may post a certain amount of money with the court for their release
before trial.

their peers. This means that people from the community, rather
than a judge, ultimately decides the innocent or guilt of a
defendant. A criminal defendant has the right to present witnesses
and evidence in their defense. A criminal defendant also has the

MAYAN AGRICULTURE
Due Date______________________________________________
Instructions: You will be asked to complete one of the following
assignments.
Assignment One - Visual – Study photographs of the following
environments: mountainous region, swamps and forested
lowlands.
Answer the following question: If farmers require certain
conditions (relatively flat land, proper irrigation and drainage, and
sunlight) to grow crops, how can one modify the land to grow
crops in each of the three environments?
Assignment Two -Verbal – Read the descriptions of mountainous
regions, swamps and forest lowlands.
Mountainous Region – A mountainous region is characterized by
steep grades in the land – a very severe slope. Rain runs off the
mountain and does not collect on its slopes. Vegetation grows on
mountains. Sunlight may have difficulty reaching the slopes of a
mountain if it is heavily forested. Otherwise, sunlight and rain
have ample opportunity to reach the slope of a mountain.
Swamps – A swamp is a large area covered continually by low
lying surface water. Where the water is not on the surface, the
land is probably saturated with water and therefore quite muddy.
Plant life which thrives on heavy water supplies will thrive here.
Animal and insect life is abundant. Trees may cover parts of the
swamp area but other areas may still receive ample sunlight.
Forest lowlands – Forest lowland is covered by trees. Sunlight has
difficulty reaching the land as the tree canopy prevents this.
Moreover, the tree roots drain most of the nutrients from the soil.
It does, however, rain and the water is amply soaked up by the
trees.
Answer the following question: If farmers require certain
conditions (relatively flat land, proper irrigation and drainage, and
sunlight) to grow crops, how can one modify the land to grow
crops in each of the three environments?
Assignment Three - Kinesthetic – Study the small models of
mountainous regions, swamps and forest lowlands.
Answer the following question: If farmers require certain
conditions (relatively flat land, proper irrigation and drainage, and
sunlight) to grow crops, how can one modify the land to grow
crops in each of the three environments?
