like or as. Examples: “The old bread was as hard as a brick” and “His eyes were like blue swimming pools.”
metaphor a type of figurative language in which the writer compares two things by using a
form of the verb to be. In other words, the writer states that one thing is another thing in order
to make the reader notice how they are alike. For example, “The old bread was a brick” and “His
eyes were blue swimming pools.”
Complete the following table. In the first column, copy figures of speech that you identify in the story. In
the second column, interpret each figure of speech by completing the sentence starter.
