British Agricultural and Industrial Revolution Transportation during the British Industrial Revolution (which lasted from the year 1760, and ended between 1820 - 1840), affected individuals, the community, and/or the world by improving the efficiency of transporting goods over a long distance. Transportation innovations affected individuals, the community, and/or the world by Producing Steam engines, and Canal boats which were used for either human transportation or transportation of goods. The Industrial Revolution began in the year 1760, and ended between 1820 - 1840. During that time, farming techniques were improved. At that time, 80% of the world was farming to keep the other 20% from starving. This is very different than the production system which functioned in society, which was “ less than 1% of the population farms, and 99% consumes the harvest. ” Another concept prior to the industrial revolution was the only source power which was used was muscle (Animal/Human) power Usually the technique used was walking or on a horse/other animal with muscles. The wagon horse was an invention which consisted of a horse attached to a wagon, thus, the wagon horse. This invention was used to transport products across land to markets and also for public transportation. When the Horse wagon further advanced to a more faster way of transport, railroads were invented and gained popularity quickly. Railroads were steam - powered engines that would run via wheels on a track which consists of a outer layer which would fit underneath the Wheels so that they could spin faster which would increase the trains speed. Railroads also helped to establish Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). in 1880 GMT was developed when the Railroads needed time tables to help them stay on track. This method would stabilize the train’s schedule and would create standardized time. This in turn would affect the country by lowering the time differences between places and creating GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). The Railroads also affected human behavior by forcing people to occupy themselves with reading instead of socializing with other passengers. Prior to the innovation of the railroad, people would socialize with others which in-turn led to conversations, friendships, etc. This behavior was set aside by the railroads which encouraged and necessitated it to read on the train. The Invention of the railroad also lead to modern trains which are very popular today. They are a great source of public transport but not so much of goods transport. With the railroad being very efficient, there was one flaw. Because the railroad couldn't hold so much weight, the canal boat was invented Canal Boats are flat bottomed vehicles which run on canals. vocabulary.com states that “A canal is a long, man-made strip of water used for irrigation or boat access to a bigger body of water, like the famous Erie Canal, which connects the Hudson River to Lake Erie.” (Canals 1750 to 1900, 2015) Canal Boats were mainly built for transport of heavy goods across rivers. Canal boats were mainly used for “transporting goods such as coal or fragile pottery” (Canals 1750 to 1900, 2015). Although goods could have been transported via muscle, the canal boat could life much more than that According to historylearningsite.co.uk, the canal boats “were capable of moving nearly forty tonnes of weight.” (Canals 1750 to 1900, 2015). Because of this canal boats were more efficient therefore, increased useage during the British Industrial Revolution. Boats like the canal Boat further advanced to becoming ships, therefore establishing the cargo ship which can carry more than a thousand tonnes. When all is considered, Transportation innovations affected individuals, the community, and/or the world by Producing Steam engines, and Canal boats which were used for either human transportation or transportation of goods. Through the many innovations we can infer that transport innovations did have a major impact on society which includes individuals, the community, and the world because it it allowed for modern train transport as well as cargo ships and also cruise ships. These are great examples of the effects of Innovations during the British Industrial Revolution.
