CONTEMPORARY EVENING BOOK DISCUSSION:
WORLD LITERATURE DISCUSSIONS
Moderated by Professor Bill Schiavo
Moderated by Professor Michael Boecherer of SCCC
Civil Disobedience, by Henry David Thoreau
Thursday, March 2 at 2:00 PM
“Civil Disobedience” was originally one of
Bill Schiavo
Thoreau’s lectures, given after he spent a
night in jail for protesting against slavery and the Mexican War.
Please join us as we discuss this powerful essay as Thoreau
emphasizes the need to prioritize one’s conscience over the
dictates of laws, and argues that government rarely proves
itself useful.
Evidence of Things Unseen, by Marianne Wiggins
Thursday, March 9 at 7:30 PM
Acclaimed author Wiggins has written a magical love story, a poetic novel
of America between the two World Wars at the brink of the Atomic Age.
Hypnotic and powerful, it portrays how the years ahead hold promise for
Fos and Opal, but the “evidence of things unseen” change their trust in a
safe future as their lives spin out of control.
Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell
Thursday, April 6 at 2:00 PM
Orwell’s grim satire against totalitarian
government was first published in 1949, when
1984 was well into the future. Depicting the main
character’s futile battle to survive in a system that
he had helped to create, the author intended the
book to be a warning about the dangers of conformity, mental
coercion and verbal deception.

ONE ISLAND - ONE BOOK: “LONG ISLAND READS”
BOOK DISCUSSION Dead Wake: the Last Crossing
of the Lusitania, by Erik Larson
Long Island Reads
Thursday, April 13 at 7:30 PM
NSPL joins other Long Island libraries in offering Dead Wake, this year’s
Long Island Reads Book, as our April discussion title. Long Island native
Larson has written a riveting account of the attack and sinking of the
Lusitania. The largest and fastest ocean liner of its time which set sail
from New York to Liverpool on May 1, 1915, as World War I entered its
tenth month, it carried a record number of infants and children among
its passengers. Please join us during National Library Week for this
discussion.
