Rita, Pampanga – “It’s all about promoting hard work and patience.” Thus said Mayor Yolanda Pineda as she led the recent Suman Festival here. Pineda and municipal officials showcased the “biggest suman” measuring 8.25 feet long and 14 inches in diameter in front of the Sta. Rita Church after the traditional early morning Mass last week. Pineda said the festival is on its third year and a continuation of the “Duman Festival” held last December 3. “The making of suman reminds us of the importance of being patient and at same time thanking God for the yearly bountiful harvest,” said Pineda. Suman is rolled rice usually wrapped in banana leaves. Duman is also included as an ingredient in many recipes of suman, including the huge one eaten by Mayor Pineda with residents and Monsignor Eugene Reyes, parish priest of Sta. Rita. PHOTO BY RIC GONZALES ‘Morbid’ coffin business now thriving in Sto. Tomas BY JOEY PAVIA SANTO TOMAS, Pampanga – About 40 percent of the total 37,886 population of this town largely depends on the coffinmaking industry once considered morbid and unaccepted by its own residents, Mayor Joselito Naguit disclosed on Wednesday. The casket-making industry started at the height of World World II in the 1940’s when the country was invaded by Japanese soldiers and later freed by the American forces, said Naguit. But since the 1970’s, he added, the industry has been accepted by the locals and visitors and allowed many of its some 63,000 households to become economically productive. “Before, we hid when we made coffins. Now, we openly do them as they mean hard earned money for our people. Besides, someone has to do the caskets and Santo Tomas did it,” said the two-term mayor in the dialect. He added that then Santo Tomas residents led by the late Aquino “Apung Quili” Tayag had seen the opportunity to earn from making coffins for the victims of war. “And there were several woods then in Pampanga not being used other than for cooking,” said Naguit, who himself donated three drums of formalin that could be used for 1,000 dead bodies in Mindanao. PUNTO! CENTRAL LUZON • DECEMBER 22 - 25, 2011 • THURSDAY - SUNDAY PAINFUL BUT NEEDED This 4th class municipality hugged the media limelight when Gov. Lilia Pineda and the Pam- 2 panga Mayor’s League (PML) led by Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo decided to donate 500 coffins for the more than 1,000 victims of typhoon Sendong in Cagayan De Oro and Iligan Cities. “It’s painful to donate coffins but we have no choice but to give respect to our dearly departed brothers and sisters. I hope it will ease the pain experienced by their families,” said Pineda in the dialect. The provincial government’s donation was about P1.4 million, contributing to the income of this town which produces about 24,000 coffins monthly. CASKET CAPITAL Naguit said they supply about 70 percent of the total coffin production of the country. As a result, he added, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recognized the town some 60 kilometers north of Metro Manila as “Casket Capital of the Philippines.” Public Employment Service Office (PESO) chief Mia Marquez said the coffin manufacturers received the order to produce 500 coffins at about 2:00 p.m. on Monday. She added that they had to be finished all the orders within 12 hours so that the Philippine Navy could deliver them in hard-hit areas in Northern Mindanao early morning on Tuesday. PHOTOS BY RIC GONZALES ez said there are 62 coffin makers tagged as wood and metal crafts registered in their record. Marquez quickly added that “more are the so-called backyard makers.” In an interview with residents of San Vicente, they said “it’s normal to see houses which have small coffin factories under their houses.” “That’s why some of our new visitors give a strange look when they see coffins brought out on the streets for curing under the sun,” they said. The backyard and unregistered casket makers, they added, supply the demands of the prominent coffin producers in the town, including Germel Metal and Wood Crafts in San Vicente. Acting Tourism Office chief Tina Torres said Germel’s stock of coffins of more than 10 were the first batches to be delivered in Mindanao on Tuesday. Germel owned by Rogelio De Los Reyes had to complete the 49 coffins overnight as part of the 500 ordered by the PML and Pineda. De Los Reyes had to hire more workers on top of his 10 regular staff to finish the order on time. At Germel, some of their workers earn P300 to P350 per day considering the lowest allowed by law in the 4th class town is about P285. The Authority of the Freeport Area of Bataan (AFAB) announced on Monday that DeskTop Bags Philippines, Inc – a partner of the Luenthai International Group Ltd. (Luen Thai) – signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), Registration Agreement and Contract of Lease with AFAB to manufacture computer bags, trolleys, CD bags, camera bags and other accessories. “For its initial operations, DeskTop will generate around 600 job opportunities. At full capacity, DeskTop will employ around 2,000 workers,” said AFAB Chairman and Administrator Deogracias G.P. Custodio in a statement. “We are glad about DeskTop’s decision to join the FAB family. DeskTop is a welcome addition to the growing number of AFAB partners that will help the AFAB to establish the FAB as the Future’s Answer to Business and to generate the much needed job opportunities for the residents of Bataan,” he added. DeskTop is the first computer bag manufacturer to invest in the area. Custodio said aside from DeskTop, other manufacturers are set to locate in the FAB under the existing partnership between the AFAB and Luen Thai. Under the MOA with Luen Thai signed last August 2011, the latter also plans to locate some of its production/manufacturing businesses including a textile mill operation at the FAB. While there are clamors for Luen Thai to branch into other business ventures at the FAB – like the establishment of a hotel and restaurant facility – it has maintained its focus on expanding its core businesses related to the production of high quality luxury items. Second District Rep. Abet Garcia said he had worked for the creation of the law creating AFAB in 2009 “to push progress not just in the FAB but in the entire province.” Under the law, the investors will get to enjoy the incentives that FAB offers such as Income Tax Holiday (ITH) from four years to eight years; 5 percent tax in lieu of local and national taxes after ITH period; duty free importation of capital equipment, raw materials, consumer goods and personal items; exemption from wharfage dues, export taxes, imposts and fees; domestic sales allowance of up to 30 percent of total sales; and special visas for investors. GALANG SCIENCE CITY OF MUNOZ, Nueva Ecija – Pests exposed to the same variety of rice over the years “evolved” into more powerful types that would overcome the resistance of the varieties, thus warn an expert from the country’s premier rice research agency. Thelma Padolina, chief of the plant breeding and biotechnology division of the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice), urged farmers to practice variation of rice seeds to keep higher yields and do away with certain kinds of pests. She said that resistance of rice plants to pests decreases for two main reasons: intensive cropping and the use of the same variety every season. Not all outstanding traits such as high yield, pest resistance, excellent grains and eating quality, are present in one variety which pushes PhilRice to conduct more extensive studies. Padolina said the agency keeps on improving varieties to help the farmers fight evolving pests and diseases, changing climatic conditions resulting to various stresses such as low and high temperature, submergence, salinity that reduces yield, and changing preferences of farmers, millers and consumers. She said PhilRice is actively pursuing breeding “to provide the farmer more choices and allow him to cope with rapid changes in the environment.” Padolina also said quality of modern varieties absorb nutrients faster and are more effective in photosynthetic activities, owing to plant physical traits such as short upright PUNTO! CENTRAL LUZON • DECEMBER 22 - 25, 2011 • THURSDAY - SUNDAY THINK GREEN 4 leaves and more tillers make them superior over traditional varieties in terms of yield. She added that many modern varieties are resistant to “biotic” and “abiotic” stresses. Biotic stress refers to occurrence of pests and diseases while abiotic stress includes drought, salinity, high and low temperatures, and other environmental conditions that cause harm to the plant and reduces its yield. Padolina said while there are rice varieties that have evolved by natural and farmer selection, rice varietal development remains a priority in a country with a fast-growing population and with a rice selfsufficiency goal. She also added an intensive cropping using traditional variety is not possible in the terraces or in the highland farms because of the varieties’ long maturity. Traditional varieties that mature within 150-180 days, however, are good sources of resistance and grain quality traits which are being replicated in the development of new and modern rice varieties, the PhilRice reported. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. (Luke 2:11-14) 6 Oh, that we Christians bring Christ back to our Christmas... Blessed poverty (The Christmas sermon of the frustrated reverend, thus turned irreverent, A. Caesar Z. Lacson, printed, updated and reprinted for the nth time) acaesar.blogspot.com Zona Libre Bong Z. Lacson AT NO other season of the year is unchristian charity more practised than at Christmastime. Hordes of do-gooders – politicians, notably – make perfunctory swoops through resettlement sites and evacuation centers, shantytowns and squatter areas bearing an assortment of stomach fillers packaged in Christmas tinsel stamped with their names in big bold letters. As though the gifts came from their pockets and not from the public coffers they pillaged and plundered or from some contractors they bled dry. And what gift-giving will be complete, nay, will ever be, without the media pressed to cover the event? So we’ve been dogmatized from our pre-first communion catechism class that gift-giving took off from the first Christmas example of the three magi whose anonymity – the Good Book did not identify them, remember? – spoke a lot about genuine charity and a lot more about true humility. Though tradition named them, it did not tell of a gift of gold from Gaspar, myrrh from Melchior, or frankincense from Balthazar. Tradition travestied now in every gift gilded or etched with titled names, as in smoked ham from the honorable governor, pungent edam from the honorable congressman, crispy Ninoy from the honorable mayor. Honorable oxymorons all, given the dishonorable conduct of Philippine politics and the way they run their dominions. Rob the country blind the whole year. Give something for the noche buena table of the poor. And all is well with the Lord. Christian living, indeed! At no other season of the year is poverty more pronounced than at Christmastime. You just can’t escape it. Not in this season of giving when, most naturally, beggars – in all shapes and sizes – go forth and multiply. There’s the outstretched palm shoved at your face, nearly knocking your caramel macchiato mug as you watch the girls pass by Starbucks at SM City Clark. There’s the unshod kid tugging at your Lacoste shirt as you line up for baby-back ribs at Rack’s in SM City Pampanga. Stalled in traffic going to Marquee Mall, there’s the tap at your car window from a tabo-tapping tyke wishing you Merry Christmas. There’s the unending stream of carolers of all ages in two’s, three’s, singly or in gangs singing thanks for your ten-peso kindness. There too are the indigenous Aetas descended from Porac’s mountains and the Badjaos way removed from their native Sulu Sea habitat finding their way to your very doorstep, demanding food, clothes, money as though you were the very cause of their deprivation. A recurring racket I first noted four seasons back: “SEC-registered” religious and civic organizations from Kamuning, Quezon City and Tanay, Rizal going house-to-house in St. Jude Village in the City of San Fernando with letters of solicitation for their “projects for the poor.” They could have simply saved on their bus, jeepney and tricycle fares and gave them to their poor. With Ondoy devastating Metro Manila areas two years back, an increase was noted in these metropolis-based “SEC-registered” racketeers knocking on Pampanga doors. With Sendong demolishing Cagayan de Oro and Iligan but a week ago, expect more of these racketeers hitting Angeles and San Fernando. The poor do indeed constitute an object lesson for Christmas. But not from the perspective of patronage politics where the poor are shamelessly dehumanized, reduced to utilitarian tools for the politicians’ self-projection for the coming elections. Neither from the pharisaic (dis)compassion of wannabe Samaritans where mendicancy, rather than liberation from poverty, is instituted. The poor do really make the leitmotif of the season. Or have we forgotten how the Christ was born? Engrossed as we are in the commercialization of Christmas, we find its reason in the malls rather than in church; we summon its spirit from our pockets rather than from our hearts. Only yesterday, a beggar knocked at my gate and asked, in a guttural – read: non-Kapampangan – voice, for a little share of the blessings God gave me this year. His jaw dropped when I told him that in his poverty he was more blessed than me. No, I did not mean that he is spared the trouble of a house and cars to maintain, mortgages to pay, kids to send to school, job pressure, societal demands, etc. I meant a different kind of blessedness that is inherent in poverty. That is the truly spiritual kind. Is it just me, or is it still a verity in Christian teaching that poverty liberates? That the poor, unfettered by material – worldly – possession, have so much spiritual wealth that in the end theirs is the kingdom of heaven? A materially impoverished, and therefore, blessed Christmas to us all. Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool where you least expect it, there will be a fish. –Ovid (43 BC - 17 AD) EDGAR V. MOVIDO Founder LLL Trimedia Coordinators Publisher General Manager Atty. “Gawin sa iba yaong nais mong gawin ng iba sa inyo (Do unto others what you want others to do unto you.)” TODAY IN HISTORY Bing Crosby introduces ‘White Christmas’ "White Christmas," written by the formidable composer and lyricist Irving Berlin receives its world premiere on December 25, 1941 on Bing Crosby's weekly NBC radio program, The Kraft Music Hall. It went on to become one of the most commercially successful singles of all time, and the top-selling single ever until being surpassed by Elton John's "Candle in the Wind 1997." "White Christmas" took its first steps toward becoming a bedrock standard in the American songbook when Crosby first performed it publicly on Christmas Day, 1941. The song's success couldn't have surprised Berlin, who despite having already written such songs as "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Cheek To Cheek" and "God Bless America," had raced into his Manhattan office in January 1940 and asked his musical secretary to transcribe "The best song I ever wrote...the best song anybody ever wrote." It was nearly two years later, however, that Crosby finally premiered the song on live radio, and a year after that Crosby's recording of "White Christmas" became a smash pop hit. Crosby's October 1942 recording of "White Christmas" received heavy airplay on Armed Forces Radio as well as on commercial radio during its first Christmas season, becoming an instant #1 pop hit. It also returned to the Hit Parade pop chart in every subsequent Christmas season for the next 20 years. Unlike other perennial holiday hits, however, "White Christmas" strikes a mood that isn't necessarily jolly. As Jody Rosen, author of the 2002 book White Christmas: The Story of an American Song, told National Public Radio, "It's very melancholy....And I think this really makes it stand out amongst kind of chirpy seasonal standards [like] 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer' or 'Let It Snow.'....I think that's one of the reasons why people keep responding to it, because our feelings over the holiday season are ambivalent." This was certainly true of the immigrant Russian Jewish songwriter Irving Berlin. Though he did not celebrate Christmas, it was a day that held special meaning to Berlin, who had spent each Christmas Day visiting the grave of his late son, Irving Berlin, Jr., who died at just 3 weeks old on December 25, 1928. As Jody Rosen has suggested about a beloved song of great emotional complexity, "The kind of deep secret of ["White Christmas"] may be that it was Berlin responding in some way to his melancholy about the death of his son." “We hope that the police will intensify the campaign, it is our low year as far as production is concern, and that means that more illegally manufactured or sourced products will be in the market,” ani Erese. 6 missing in heavy monsoon rains in Aurora PUNTO! CENTRAL LUZON • DECEMBER 22 - 25, 2011 • THURSDAY - SUNDAY DOT Region III 13 Luisita farmers hit back... FROM PAGE 1 In a statement, the Unyon ng Manggagawa sa Agrikultura (UMA), the Alyansa ng mga Manggagawang Bukid sa Asyenda Luisita (Ambala) and the United Luisita Workers Union (ULWU) instead accused the management of the Hacienda Luisita Inc. (HLI) for what they described as “arson of three parcels of land planted with sugar cane.” “So the family of the President (Aquino) and the HLI management could put the blame on farm workers and legitimize the filing of criminal cases against leaders and other farm worker beneficiaries,” the statement said. UMA secretary general Rodel Mesa accused the family of the President and officials of the HLI of being “definitely behind this well-staged political drama to justify the reversal of the 14- 0 decision of Supreme Court on Hacienda Luisita and the filing of trumped up charges against leaders and members of Ambala.” Police probers said local farmers allegedly set fire to a portion of the sugarcane field at Hacienda Luisita that is owned by the family of Pres. Aquino in Barangay Balete, Tarlac City where P1-million worth of crops were destroyed last Friday morning. The police are also investigating the alleged participation of some members of local farmers’ associations. But the farmers’ groups debunked this. “Why will we do that (burn sugarcane plantations)? In fact, we are harvesting the sugarcane to earn some money for Christmas. We will have nothing to gain if we set on fire these parcels of land planted with sugarcane,” they stressed. Police named the suspects as Barangay Balete councilmen Pual Mallari and Hilario Hipolito, Leonila Halili, Dominador Salian, all of Barangay Balete and Felix Nacpil of Barangay Mabilog, Concepcion, Tarlac. The suspects reportedly led at least 30 farmers that started the blaze. Hacienda Luisita Independent Planters Association, Azucal Inc. and other farmers from Sugarcane Farming Agricultural Corp. are currently renting the sugar plantation from HLI. The farmers, however, had their version of what allegedly happened. “On December 16, at around 9: 30 am, while farm workers were busy harvesting sugar cane in Barangay Balete, members of Tarlac police and private security personnel of HLI came and told farm workers to stop. While engaging the local police force and Luisita personnel in verbal debate, suddenly the farmworkers noticed that three parcels of land planted with sugar cane were set on fire by unidentified men,” they said in their statement. They cited reports that “Ambala chairman, Felix Nakpil Jr. and other officers and members of the farm worker group will be charged with arson and other criminal offenses in connection with the arson of three parcels of land planted with sugar cane, according to reports reaching UMA national headquarters in Quezon City.” “As legitimate owners of Hacienda Luisita land based on the 14- 0 decision of the high court, what we will do is to harvest these sugarcanes and later replace with staple NOTICE OF LOSS crops and vegetables in the name of our ‘bungkalan’ or cultivation campaign for food self-sufficiency and livelihood,” said UMA secretary general Rodel Mesa. De Mesa also accused the HLI management of “sowing terror among farm worker beneficiaries to compel them to let go their land claims on the 4,916 hectares and to the P 1. 33 billion shares from the sale of Luisita lands. “Whether the HLI denies it or not, its motive and role in the burning incident last Dec.16 is undeniable,” added Mesa. UMA said the stagemanaged burning of three parcels of land planted with sugar cane was also done to justify the fullblown militarization of the 6,453 hectare sugar estate. Last month, the Supreme Court, voting 14-0, ordered the distribution of almost 4,916 hectares of land to some 6,000 farmer beneficiaries of HLI. In a 56- page decision, the 14 magistrates “recalled and set aside” the option given to the farmer beneficiaries to remain as stockholders of HLI. Ona desididong baguhin... PUNTO! Huwag palampasin ang Asian TV Awards’ Best Talk Show for 2011, The Bottomline with Boy Abunda, sa Sabado, 11:30 p.m., pagkatapos ng Banana Split sa ABS-CBN.
