He began as a leading exponent of the 19th‐century romantic movement called Pictorialism, and rapidly evolved into one of the leaders of modernism. For more than half a century, Steichen was known to many as the most famous living photographer and has been referred to as the ‘father of celebrity photography.’ John and Ethel Barrymore. Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover. Fashion shoots for Vogue and Vanity Fair. The George Washington Bridge and Brancusi’s Bird in Space. From movie stars, politicians, and models to still lifes and landscapes, the range of subjects photographed by Edward Steichen is astounding. Photographing all of them beautifully, capturing the essence of their character through innovative posing, lighting, framing, and film development techniques, Steichen shaped the way we think about celebrity. Edward Steichen’s influence as the first curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art New York and the organizer of the internationally celebrated exhibition The Family of Man cannot be overstated. Steichen created conventions in photography about how to present and construct an identity in front of the camera that have been emulated by countless photographers who came after him. In 1963, President John F. Kennedy presented him with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of a lifetime of achievement. Richard and Jackie Hollander are believed to have held the largest collection of Steichen’s photos in private hands. Their gift to the three museums represents part of their overall collection. Purchased directly from the estate of the artist by the Hollanders and printed by Steichen himself, the provenance of the photographs is impeccable and unique. The Hollanders’ Vision: “Steichen for the Nation” and “Giving Back” Presenting this gift to these three outstanding institutions across the United States represents the Hollanders’ commitment for the collection to have the greatest accessibility to the public across the nation, from coast to coast. Their hope is the gift will provide an opportunity for students, art enthusiasts, and the general public to gain increased appreciation for Edward Steichen and his ability to inspire. The Block’s permanent collection enriches these dialogues by providing students, faculty, scholars and the public intimate access to nearly 5,000 prints, drawings, and photographs ranging from the 15th century to the present. www.blockmuseum.northwestern.edu Since its inception in 1965, LACMA has been devoted to collecting works of art that span both history and geography‐and represent Los Angeles's uniquely diverse population. Today, the museum features particularly strong collections of Asian, Latin American, European, and American art, as well as a contemporary art museum on its campus. With this expanded space for contemporary art, innovative collaborations with artists, and an ongoing Transformation project, LACMA is creating a truly modern lens through which to view its rich encyclopedic collection. www.lacma.org Founded in 1930, the Whitney Museum of American Art is the world’s leading museum of twentieth‐century and contemporary art of the United States. In addition to its landmark exhibitions, the Museum is known internationally for events and educational programs of exceptional significance and as a center for research, scholarship, and conservation. While its vibrant program of exhibitions and events continues uptown, the Whitney is constructing a new building, designed by Renzo Piano, in downtown Manhattan. Ground was broken on the new building in May 2011, and it is projected to open to the public in 2015. www.whitney.org Institution Contacts: Burke Patten Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art (847) 467‐4602 [email protected] Miranda Carroll LACMA (323) 857‐6543 [email protected] Stephen Soba Whitney Museum of American Art (212) 570‐3634 [email protected] Images for Media Use: A selection of high resolution photographs from the collection are available for media use upon request and clearance Page 3 of 3
