The beginning of 171 new beginnings!
May 1, 2013
“Light Rail is doing exactly what we thought it could do, which is
to transform our community, to rebuild our community, to reconnect
our community – and there is no better example of what the power
of Light Rail and a great transit corridor can do than this project
that we break ground on here today. Congratulations!”
– Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman
When it opens in Fall 2014, our Midway Village senior apartment complex
will provide 171 beautiful new beginnings for seniors with diverse wants and needs. It truly “took a village” to
make this possible. Accordingly, the ground that was broken was collected in a wheelbarrow to symbolize each
partner’s contribution toward our common goal. This soil will be used to nurture new life for our residents and their
families to enjoy forever in Midway Village’s two-story indoor Winter Garden and outdoor Village Greenway.
The Shovel-Wielding Seven (Left to Right): Marvin Plakut (Episcopal Homes President & CEO) • Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman
• Russ Stark (City Council Member representing our district) • George Latimer (see Page 2) • The Rt. Rev. Brian N. Prior (Bishop,
Episcopal Church in Minnesota) • Bette Ashcroft (Chair, Board of Trustees) • Paul Woxland (HUD). “It takes a village.”

Our village truly takes a village. Through our ongoing All Aboard Capital Campaign, $5 million of private
philanthropic dollars secures our ability to finance our $45.5 million Midway Village senior apartment complex.
As this issue of our newsletter goes to press, we have raised just over $3.5 million (71%) toward our $5 million
goal, which we hope to exceed.
Clearly, a project of this magnitude requires support of all kinds and sizes. Every dollar matters. We invite you to
come aboard and join the community leaders listed here in support of the largest development along the Light Rail
since the Union Depot restoration. To learn more about our capital campaign, call Shelly Rucks at 651-632-8855.

THE TERRACE AT IRIS PARK
“Sure, my kids and I will miss our home
of 39 years, but at this juncture, having a life
matters more to me than having a house.
“Episcopal Homes has a great reputation,
there’s a palpable sense of community, I’ll be
within 10 minutes of my four kids who live in
town, and the Light Rail will be at my door.
“The 2014 opening date will give me plenty
of time to decide what to bring with me. By
the way, I will have a very nice house to sell.”
– George Latimer
“Our home was just the right size when there were
seven of us living in it,” says George, “but it’s just been
me since my Nan (Nancy Moore Latimer) passed away
seven years ago. I’m 78 now. I really don’t need all this
space, and I know I won’t be able to drive forever, so
I started looking at other options a couple years ago.”
While George could afford to stay in his home, he
has concluded that “having a life” matters more to him
than having a house. He wants to make sure that his
four children who live in town can continue to have
their own lives too.
“My kids visit me every week and are always doing
things to help out,” says George. “I’m still in fairly
good shape, but I know that I’m gradually declining.
George Latimer, former Saint Paul Mayor
and future resident of The Terrace at Iris Park.
If I were to stay in our big house, my kids’ role would
slowly – or perhaps suddenly – evolve from being
helpers to being caregivers. I don’t want to do that
to them. I don’t want to ever let our relationship become
about caring for Dad. I want it to always be about
sharing with Dad. Living at The Terrace will ensure
that, even if I should need 24/7 home care someday.”
George had three primary criteria for evaluating
his options: (1) Reputation, (2) Community, and
(3) Practical Benefits for himself and his family.
Reputation: George’s wife Nan was a Senior Program
Officer for the McKnight Foundation. She had told him
that Episcopal Homes’ President and CEO Marvin Plakut
was “one of the good ones.” She’d been impressed with
his commitment to building high quality, affordable
housing for seniors in Saint Paul.
As George began exploring his options in earnest, he
heard more good things about Episcopal Homes from
friends, including Saint Paul Mayor Chris Coleman.
Our two most recent residences were built on his watch
with his enthusiastic support: Carty Heights (2007)
and Kings Crossing (2010). Mayor Coleman is also
a regular visitor to Cornelia House where his in-laws
Jan and Jim Johnson have lived since it opened in
2005. Our reputation passed muster.
There comes a time when each of us has to be honest
about how much house we need to call it “home.”

TRANSITIONAL CARE
Speaking at our May 1 groundbreaking for his
new home: “My daughter told Deb Veit, ‘He wants
the biggest one at the top.’ She knows her father.”
“After my first knee surgery, I chose Episcopal
Homes for my rehab because it was convenient
for my husband Grover.
“After my second knee was done, I came back
because of how much the staff cares. The first
person I saw was a nurse with a familiar face.
She beamed and said, ‘Hi, Sheryle!’
“After three years and seeing so many patients
come and go, Lynne Arlington remembered me!
So did ‘Dr.Mark’ MacDonald the medical director.
He greeted me with a big hug. My healing began
with being recognized and cared about. Healing is
about so much more than medication and therapy.”
– Sheryle Givens
Two-Time Rehab Patient
Continued from Page 2...
Community: “I have some very dear, long-time
friends who live in Cornelia House at Episcopal
Homes,” says George. “Ruby Hunt and Dave
and Judy Nass. I am also getting to know Jan and
Jim Johnson through my friendship with Chris
Coleman. All of them have told me that they feel
a palpable sense of community here. I’ve felt it
myself when I’ve visited them. Community matters
a lot to me, and being part of this community will
never hinge on my being able to drive.”
George added that the sense of community extends
to the Episcopal Homes staffers he’s met, especially
Deb Veit, our Community Relations Director. Deb
is the go-to person for people who want to learn
more about the three residences in Midway Village.
Sheryle continues, “I believe that healing is as much about
restoring one’s spirit as it is about restoring one’s body.”
“I’ve found that nothing restores my spirit like feeling
cared for, respected, and connected. That is how I felt both
times in the TCU (Transitional Care Unit) at Episcopal
Church Home, and that is why I volunteered to share my
story. I think almost everyone who reads this will be faced
with having to choose a TCU for rehab someday.”
“Here’s an example of what I’m talking about,” continues
Sheryle. “At first, I was loopy with pain medication and still
not comfortable. My therapist sensed this. She asked how
I was feeling and I told her. So she went easy on me, and
Practical Benefits: For George, they include living
on the Light Rail (“Much better than the Downtown People Mover idea we were kicking around
back in 1979”), and having a warm water therapy
pool, a fitness center, and a host of other amenities
right downstairs. The primary practical benefit for
his children will be living within 10 minutes of their
dad. “Except for my son who lives in Colorado,
that is,” says George. “But when he visits, he’ll
be able to take the Light Rail from the airport to my
door. Yes, we’ll miss the old house, but home is
where the heart is, and it will be moving in 2014.”

them a moment to

first knee rehab.

we did my therapy right in my room. She understood
that I was in no mood to be wheeled down the hall to
the therapy gym. As I progressed, she always knew
how hard to push me without making me feel overwhelmed. She cared more about how I was feeling than
‘where I was supposed to be’ on any given day of my
rehab. Together, we reached all of my goals in the
normal amount of time.”
Another thing that struck Sheryle was how “connected”
all of the staff were with each other and, in turn, with
her. “I’m not just talking nursing and therapy staff
here,” says Sheryle. “The feeling of connectedness
included everyone – the food service people, Dan the
housekeeper, and me. Dan and I had some great
conversations about the downtown Saint Paul of our
youth. The favorite places that aren’t there anymore.
All of this helped restore my spirit, and my body
couldn’t help but follow along.”
Sheryle and her husband Grover have been married
for five years. Both of them had been married before.
They met at Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Saint Paul
where Grover is an associate minister and Sheryle is a
deaconess. Sheryle has been in business all her life.
She was the marketing director of Souhdale in its early
years, then marketing director of Galtier Plaza when it
opened. Later, she got involved with the Metropolitan
Area Agency on Aging (MAAA) and traveled statewide to train local staffs for the Senior LinkAge Line.
The couple launched MJAS* (pronounced “ma-JAZ”)
on June 26, 2010 as a retirement career. “I’ve dreamed
of making jewelry since my mother bought me a sea
shell jewelry kit when I was nine,” says Sheryle.
“When I look back on my professional life, I can see
the hand of God at work getting me the training and
experience I needed to make my dream come true. My
four grandchildren, after whom our business is named,
each have different gifts from God. Each of those gifts
has been very helpful in getting us off the ground.
God has a plan for all of us. I pray that it includes our
grandchildren taking over our business after Grover
and I have been called home.” We do too, Sheryle!
*Sheryle’s jewelry studio and showroom is called MJAS after her four grandchildren, Mykel, Jasmine, Anthony, and Sydney.
It is located in the Everest Arts & Science Center at 713 Minnehaha Avenue East, Suite 211, Saint Paul MN 55106 • 651-774-1766

THE RETURN OF
THE PRODIGAL PURSE
Ruby Hunt
Cornelia House Resident
The Friday Evening Social Hour at Cornelia House
started out a few years ago with a few snacks and folks
bringing their own beverages. Now, it has evolved
into an appetizing pot luck with folding chairs having
to be brought into the Coffee Shop to provide for the
growing enthusiastic participation.
At a recent gathering, I sat at a table with a group
that included Jim Johnson. He proceeded to tell us
how his wife, Jan, had lost her purse. They had lunch
at the Neighborhood Café and then went shopping at
one of the quaint stores that make up the intersection
of Selby and Snelling. When they got to the store, Jan
discovered she didn’t have her purse. She was sure
she left it on the counter at the Neighborhood Café
when she put on her coat. So Jim dashed back to the
restaurant but found it was not there and had not
been turned in.
Upon returning home, Jim started the long process
of notifying the appropriate agencies in order to avoid
illegal use of Jan’s identity. Fortunately, Jim is an
accomplished techie and he was able to do most of this
by computer, but it still took several hours. He called
Social Security and the IRS, where he was given the
telephone number of three credit rating agencies to
call. He also called credit card companies and Cornelia
House to disengage Jan’s fob (the means of entry to
our building). He admonished us never to carry our
Social Security card with us. Either memorize the whole
number or at least the last four digits. Soon, most
people there knew about Jan’s lost purse.
As the evening wore on a young man entered the room.
(By young, I mean relatively speaking. He was 47.)
When we saw he was carrying a purse, we all erupted
with cheers, and Jan rushed over to give him a hug.
Jim offered him a reward, but he graciously refused.
He was invited to join us and served a glass of wine.
Then we all had another glass of wine and proceeded
to have a wonderful chat with this young man. His
name is Pat Daddy, and he is the head bartender at
O’Gara’s. He said the purse was found on the sidewalk
outside their bar and restaurant.
Good Samaritan Pat Daddy with Cornelia House resident
Jan Johnson and the Prodigal Purse he returned.
Jim took out his iPhone and took a picture of Jan and
Pat toasting each other with a glass of wine. Then Pat
took out his iPhone and had Jim take another picture
for him. He stayed for about half an hour and then bid
us farewell. I hope when he got to O’Gara’s the next
day he told his buddies what it’s like at the “old folks
home” on Friday night. I think we surprised him!
By (literally) going the extra mile
to return Jan Johnson’s purse,
our Good Samaritan, Pat Daddy,
created what we call “a WOW
Moment.” He did a kindness that
made others think, “WOW, that was
really nice!” Episcopal Homes has been
blessed with staff and volunteers who create “WOW Moments”
every day for our residents, their families, visitors, and each
other. If you’ve visited us, you know how good it feels to be
WOWed. But we are always striving to raise the bar on
ourselves. We want every moment to be a “WOW Moment.”
That’s why you’ll see our staff and volunteers wearing these
little “WOW buttons” along with their name tags. The name
tags say who we are. The WOW buttons say what we do.
We invite you to let us know how we’re doing!

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Chaplain Lisa Nilles (from the Roman Catholic tradition)
“Archbishop Flynn is here!” the receptionist cheerfully announced
on my office phone. I headed to the lobby to welcome Catholic
Archbishop Emeritus Harry Flynn, once again, to Episcopal
Homes to say Mass. I found him and the receptionist talking and
laughing together like old friends. On our short walk from the lobby
to the chapel, Archbishop Flynn engaged each person we passed.
“What country are you from?” he asked an aide. Soon they were
sharing stories about Uganda. “Well I can certainly see the resemblance!” he remarked when passing a mother and daughter, “How
nice to see you!” At the beginning of the procession into Leigh
Chapel, he reached to tap the organist on the shoulder and said,
“Thank you for being here today.” Before Mass even began,
everyone in his presence felt blessed.

Commons,
Archbishop Flynn has made twice-yearly visits to Episcopal Homes. These visits highlight the strong Catholic
faith life on campus. For over 20 years, the priests and lay leaders of nearby St. Mark’s Catholic Church have
come to Episcopal Homes twice a week to lead communion services, say the Rosary, offer Mass, or administer
sacraments. This extraordinary commitment leads Chaplain Lisa Nilles to call Episcopal Homes “the North
Campus of St. Mark’s.” Also, for the past three years, Fr. Michael Becker of St. John Vianney Seminary has
come monthly to the Church Home to say Mass. We are grateful for the many ways the local Catholic community
supports the faith life of Catholic residents at Episcopal Homes. Thank you!
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Reading aloud
to Church Home
residents
After 30 years of teaching overseas for the Department
of Defense, Sarah Jane Nowlin returned to Episcopal
Church Home in 2003. She wanted a retirement career
and found it back where she first discovered how much
she loved volunteering with older adults.
Sarah Nowlin began volunteering at Episcopal
Church Home in the 1950’s when she was a young girl.
On Sundays, Sarah and her mother would transport
residents to St. Mark’s Cathedral in Minneapolis. Now,
50+ years later, Sarah’s volunteer work has expanded
to become a nearly full-time retirement career –
and not just at Episcopal Church Home.
Episcopal-
A typical week: Mondays, Sarah reads aloud for residents in Leigh Chapel in the mornings, then helps
with lunch in one of the Church Home’s Households.
Tuesdays, Sarah volunteers at Galtier Elementary
School in the library. Wednesdays, she does Meals on
Wheels and reads aloud for another group of Church
Home residents. Thursdays are spent bringing residents
to services in the Coventry Chapel and preparing for
lunch in another Church Home Household. Fridays
are spent volunteering at the bookstore at St. Mark’s
Cathedral. Sarah is on the Episcopal Homes Board
of Trustees too. “The times I’m volunteering are the
times that I’m most in love with life!” Amen, Sarah!

THE SAGE SINGERS
April 24, Minneapolis Convention Center
The Sage Singers are residents of Cornelia House,
Seabury, Carty Heights, and Kings Crossing (our
Independent Living residences). They’ve been making
a joyful noise for about a year under the direction
of Joey Clark from MacPhail. “It’s part of MacPhail’s
Music for Life Partnership,” says Joey. “It’s a unique
participatory lifelong learning program that engages
adults from 55 to 103+ through music.”
The Sage Singers (a name the group chose for itself)
are definitely “engaged.” On April 24, they were one
of two senior groups invited to perform for more than
1,000 supporters at the 10th Anniversary Music
Matters Luncheon (MacPhail’s biggest fund raiser)
where over $450,000 was raised to support financial
aid opportunities and sustain MacPhail’s extraordinary
programs (like Music for Life). Then, on June 4, the
Sage Singers performed their first full concert for friends
and neighbors on our campus at Coventry Chapel.
“I’ve always wanted to sing,” says one member.
“Dreams do come true if you wait long enough!”

Seabury resident Loretta
Eklund’s twinkling eyes and
her big smile are part of just
about every social event on
our campus. Monday, June 3,
the social event was Loretta’s
birthday, and her neighbors threw her a wonderful party –
complete with live music by new Seabury resident (and sax
legend) Irv Williams and friends. Loretta was delighted
and touched. “I haven’t had so much fun in 100 years!”
“STELLA!” On May 15, A Steetcar Named Desire
stopped at Carty Heights. The community room was
packed with residents from all four of our Independent
Living residences. This is the second production that
the professional Ten Thousand Things theater company
has brought to our crowd, both times to rave reviews.
“I can’t believe they can bring that kind of theater to
our own home,” says one resident. “This
was so real and raw!” Thanks to our Arts
and Events Coordinator Kristin Aitchison
for lighting up our stage – and our lives!
