A mixed
number is a
type of fraction
made of an integer
and a fraction.

Decimals
that have an
integer and a
fractional part
are decimals.

Classifying
negative decimals
and fractions
as integers
Pitfall:
classified wrong
because of the
negative sign in front of
the decimal
or fraction.
Integers
are whole
numbers and
their opposites,
including zero
(positive and negative
whole numbers).
Look for mixed numbers
with a whole number and
a fraction with the same
integer for the numerator
and the denominator.
They can represent integers
and/or whole numbers.
4
-54 represents an integer
because it is equal to -6.
A number that has a
decimal point with zeroes
to the right of the decimal
point can represent
integers and/or whole
numbers.
13.0 represents an integer
and a whole number because
it is equal to 13.
Make sure the negative
decimals or fractions don’t
represent positive or
negative integers.
8
1
and 8.0 represent an integer
and a whole number because
they both represent 8.

Not including
numbers in every
possible set and
subset.
Recording
duplicate
numbers in Venn
diagrams.
Pitfall:
Thinking that
numbers can only
belong to one set
or subset
of numbers.
Pitfall:
Thinking that a
number has to be listed
in each part of the Venn
diagram based on its
classification.
Every
number we
classify in 6th
grade is a rational
number. The numbers
can also be decimals,
fractions, integers, percents,
or whole numbers.
A number
only needs to
be recorded in
one section of the
Venn diagram based
on its classification.
Integers include whole
numbers and their
opposites (positive and
negative whole numbers),
but negative integers are
not classified as whole
numbers.
2 can be classified as an integer
and whole number but -2 can only
be classified as an integer.
There are several types of
Venn diagrams. Make sure
you understand where to
list numbers depending on
the type of Venn diagram.
